BLOG -- Recap in October

Well... looking at all the media I went through (which was very few), it seems like October was uneventful... but... it felt so busy! Lol... what happened to all my time???!! D:

I will most likely blog every other week from now until the new year. I need to spend more time on finishing up my New Year's Resolutions. I highly doubt I'll be able to complete them all, but fingers crossed!

Outings/Events in October:
- Met up with my sister.

- Celebrated a friend's birthday x2 (two different friends, lol).

- Shopped at Uniqlo with friends.

- Went to a new dentist, after about a year's hiatus, lol...

- Watched a movie for free for Cineplex's Community Day.

- Karaoked by myself + karaoked with a friend xD

- Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-I finally unlocked Palace of the Dead.

Exposures:
- (Food place): Kaiju Restaurant -- My friend really wanted to try this place for her birthday and it was pretty good! It's very close to how curry is like in Japan.

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Inside Out -- I watched this for Community Day. It was an interesting idea. I like the end message I took from it. The short film before it (Lava) was sooooooo sweet. I cried more from that than Inside Out, lol.

- (Anime): Escaflowne: The Movie -- It was okay. I probably would have appreciated it more if I saw the TV series.

Playing:
- Nothing this time.

Reading:
- (Manga) Elemental Gelade by Mayumi Azuma -- I liked the first half of this. Then it kinda went downhill, at least for me. I like the anime way better.

That's it for October. Here are some pics I took this month plus a YouTube video.

Tuna avocado tar tar -- Lol... I ordered this during one
of the rare times I felt like treating myself.

Poutine that I got from Kaiju. The gravy is actually curry. Mmmm, I liked it!

A kinda dangerous sight, lol.

A funny screenshot from Persona 4 Golden. This just makes the
amateur programmer side of me giggle.

The most funniest YouTube video I came across this month.
It has movie spoilers of Neil Breen's movies, but... soo... funny, lol.

Thanks for reading! As usual, if you have any questions / comments about anything, feel free. :)

Happy Halloween!! :)

BLOG -- Initial Impressions / Questions on the Nintendo Switch Video

So a few days ago I checked out the "First Look at Nintendo Switch" video. I'm sure millions of people have already shared their thoughts on it by now... but I will still add my own, lol. Please note that I haven't actively looked for any new information on the Nintendo Switch, nor on any information on the Nintendo NX (what it used to be called), so if any of my wonderings have already been addressed, I apologize. For those who haven't yet watched the video, you can take a look below:

First Look at Nintendo Switch.

My Initial Impressions
Well -- my overall impression is: It looks very sleek and very cool. Again Nintendo seems to be pushing towards innovation, and I can always appreciate them taking that leap. I think trying new things is often risky, so kudos! :)

I like the idea of the Nintendo Switch being a home AND portable console. It would satisfy both home-gaming and portable-gaming audiences (for those who may only play at home or those who only play on-the-go). I personally do both, so it is great that I will only need to buy one machine instead of two. This could also be great for developers if it means only needing to buy one development kit -- and having their games possibly reach a larger audience.

I know this is kinda old news, but I totally appreciate it being released in March. It just means I can wait in line overnight in a less freezing weather... lol. I don't know if I would really stand in line overnight for the Nintendo Switch (I did for the Wii), but just saying.

I am not sure if I would get this at launch, since I still have sooooo many games on backlog and sooo many consoles already hooked up to my TV (two PS2s, PS3, PS4, Wii -- my Xbox360 is in a box in my room), but the Nintendo Switch does get me excited. Maybe I will just need to become more of a hermit and plow through more of my games so I can clear up a console spot by the time March comes around.

My Questions
Now that I've covered my initial impressions... it's time for my questions! Supposedly Nintendo won't share any info on the specs until 2017, so these will be in my head until then.

-Is home playing a single player experience only? This might be silly to wonder, but I noticed in the video that only one person would be playing when at home. That is personally fine with me since I often play alone at home, but if I was to ever invite somebody over, I'd probably end up wanting to play a game with the person (nothing beats playing video games together, lol! <3).

-Does portable gaming allow up to two players max for multiplayer? Again this is something that I observed from the video and it made me wonder.

-How long is the battery life? Being a home console that can also be a portable console, the battery life better be long! Haha. Would it last 11+ hours on a one-way flight to Japan? It would be awesome if it ran on batteries and was also solar powered or some other form of energy.

-Will the controllers be battery powered? I guess it's a minor thing, but I personally like controllers that do not require batteries. Just imagine you are at an epic boss battle and it's been hours since your last save. Then the controller dies and the boss then proceeds to wipe the floor with you.

-Is there region-locking? This is a major thing for me, as I've mentioned in an entry long, long ago. Some games I like (Daigasso! Band Brothers, Ouendan, iDOLM@STER, etc.) just don't get released here so if I can experience those games without having to import another console it would be great.

-Is there backwards compatibility? My friends had already told me that backwards compatibility was not possible back when this was called Nintendo NX. After watching the video, I believe them. I think the question is still here because I don't know if news about the Nintendo NX is to be applied to the Nintendo Switch.

Annd that's it for this blog! What were your impressions of the Nintendo Switch video? Do you have any burning questions that you hope will get answered in 2017? Feel free to comment whatever you think, lol. :)

Thanks for reading! Have a good rest of the week :)

EXPOSURES (MOBILE GAME) -- Mystic Messenger

Well, after seeing one of my Facebook friends sharing fanart and then reading this Siliconera posting about it, I decided to try out Mystic Messenger, a mobile text-based game. At first I thought, 'I'm just going to interact with cute guy characters. It'll be cute and fluff', but there is more than just that. While I wouldn't say "You must experience this now!", I would say there is charm and more humour and tenderness than I would expect -- definitely things that would keep me playing.

Mystic Messenger

Playtime Length (so far): About 11-15 hours each playthrough... I think?
Platform Played on: Mobile
Language: English
Type of Game: Visual Novel, Text-based Choices, Otome-ish
Game-specific Details: I've already played through Yoosung's route and Zen's route. I am currently going through Jumin's route.

My Impressions
In Mystic Messenger, you play a female character who somehow finds herself in the chatroom of RFA, an organization that hosts grand parties for charity. After some interactions with the RFA members, you end up taking the role of party organizer and are trying to convince guests to attend the party. So that's the premise on the surface. The real story comes from interacting with the RFA members leading up to the party date.

For me, I didn't care much for the party organizing aspect of the game. All it is is responding to e-mails from guests correctly three times for at least 15 guests. What I really enjoyed was interacting with the RFA members and seeing them interact with each other. Sometimes their personalities really clash and it's quite amusing to see how the conversations play out.

To get into gameplay technicalities, one playthrough, if played well enough, lasts 11 days in real time. After the 4th day, the game branches out into one of five RFA member story routes (four guy characters, one girl character), depending on which member has the highest "affection" (based off your responses) and if you are playing the Casual Route or Deep Route (the Deep Route starts out locked).

RFA members will interact with you in three ways:

Chatrooms
This is the meat of the game and has to be experienced in order to progress the story. Chatrooms are 5-10 minute segments that become available through the course of a day. You can go into the chatroom and interact with RFA members so long as it's the most recent chatroom. If a new chatroom pops up, any previous chatrooms are missed and you will only be able to read snippets of the conversation but not have any interaction. So for example, if Chatroom A pops up at 9 AM, and Chatroom B pops up at 11 AM, you have until 11 AM to go into Chatroom A and interact.

Well... I will say I have a love/hate thing with the chatroom structure. I like that chatrooms pop up throughout the day so that I can spread out my experience with the game. But... if my day is busy, I could end up missing some conversations. However, I do understand that this is one of the ways for the developers to make money since you can re-activate missed chatrooms with 5 hourglasses (the in-game currency -- will talk more about this later).

The chatrooms themselves, well -- it's where all the amusing conversations happen. This is really where you get to see the different personalities of each RFA member and I enjoy this a lot. The chatroom is designed like a social messaging system (I've only experienced LINE and it is similar to that) and I like how it simulates that environment really well, with members using various emojis and text bubbles. Another thing I like are the varied pauses between each message. It really gives the feeling that the members are actually reading and responding to each other or are thinking about their next words.

At certain points of the conversation (if you are going through the most recent chatroom) you will be prompted to select one of two to three possible responses, and the RFA members will respond accordingly. If one of the members like your response, you'll gain affection points for them.

An amusing conversation.

 An amusing conversation, continued.

An amusing reaction to my response for another conversation.

Text messages
This sometimes happens shortly after a chatroom ends. One or some of the RFA members will send you a text message to go a bit further on the conversation that just happened. Most times you can respond. Then they will respond back and that's that. I think responding to text messages is entirely optional, but I'm not sure -- I've always responded when given the chance, lol.

Phone conversations
This sometimes happens immediately after a chatroom ends, and you will have 10 seconds to "pick up" the phone. The neat thing about a phone conversation is that the conversation is voiced! Since Mystic Messenger is originally a Korean game, the voicework is in Korean, but there are English text on the screen. Just like in a chatroom, you'll get prompted to give responses every so often. A phone conversation lasts about 3-5 minutes.

Now, you can also call the RFA members, too, but it costs 5 hourglasses to do so and there is no guarantee that the member will pick up. So far, I've tried calling three times. The first time I reached the member's voice mail; the second time the member picked up but was busy and hung up soon after; the third time I did have a conversation and was able to interact.

Now that I've talked about gameplay, I want to say that I enjoy the music in Mystic Messenger. Much of it sounds light, bright, and cheerful, but there are also sad or intense tunes during the more serious moments. Each RFA member has their own theme and I think it adds a bit to their character. My personal favourite is 707's theme, then Jaehee's, then Yoosung's, then either Zen or Jumin's.

As I mentioned earlier, there is in-game currency in Mystic Messenger. The in-game currency are in the form of hourglasses and you can get hourglasses either by spending real money, trading 100 affection points for one hourglass, or... have the game installed now and bank off the free hourglasses the developers are giving away due to making fixes/updates to the game. The latter method will of course disappear once all fixes/updates are done. So far I haven't spent any money on the game and I have over 300 hourglasses due to the fixes/updates.

Here are all the things that require hourglasses:
-Unlocking Deep Route (necessary for Jumin and 707's routes) -- 80 hourglasses
-Unlocking an RFA member's After Ending (aka epilogue) after going through their route -- 20 hourglasses each route
-Re-activating a missed chatroom -- 5 hourglasses
-Calling an RFA member -- 5 hourglasses
-Loading the last saved file -- 5 hourglasses (it is free as of this writing)
-Purchasing the next 24 hours' worth of chatrooms (I guess if you can't wait and want to play the next day all at once) -- 50 hourglasses

I would personally use hourglasses on the first three things, and then sometimes on the 4th thing.

Besides my love/hate thing with the chatroom structure, here are my couple minor gripes with Mystic Messenger:

1. The typos! -- Unfortunately typos often jump out for me, so these are pretty annoying. Thankfully most times I can still decipher what they are really saying.

2. That there is a recommended order for the member story routes -- So I had read in a guide that there is a recommended order to go through, so that each story could be enjoyed with the least amount of spoilers. This only bothers me because the story I want to go through the most, well, has the most spoilers and should be experienced last. Agggg, lol. Considering that I am just starting my 3rd playthrough, that means it will be over 11 days before I can even start the last route. Hahaha... so much waiting >_<!

Okay, I think I've blabbed enough about Mystic Messenger. If you enjoy text-based games, making choices, and watching amusing characters interact with each other, you may also enjoy this. For me, I enjoy all those things so I am glad I tried this out, lol.

Pic of 707 -- I really want to go through his route!

Thanks for reading! As always, feel free to comment about anything. :)

REVIEW/THOUGHTS [MOVIE-RELATED] -- Swiss Army Man (Blu-Ray/DVD Extra Content)

**I already blogged about Swiss Army Man back in August, but with its recent release on Blu-Ray / DVD, I just had to blog about it again. I'll be briefly covering the Blu-Ray / DVD Extra Content.**
__________________________________________________________________

Format Watched [Specific Edition, if any]: Blu-Ray
Approx. Runtime: 97 minutes (1 hours, 37 minutes)
Language Watched: English
Other Language(s) Available: No (Spanish subtitles available)
DVD Extra Content? Yes
Type of Movie: Comedy, Drama, Philosophical

OVERALL IMPRESSION
After watching it in theatres way back in August, it took a couple days for Swiss Army Man to completely win me over. Now it is one of my all-time favourite movies. Now that I know what it's trying to express, I love it with every inch of my being. Ahhh ~~ I am so happy that a movie like this exists! <3

"REVIEW" LINK
Here's the link to my "review" of Swiss Army Man. It is spoiler-filled except for the "Personal Standing" and "Overall Thoughts" sections: https://ironixgirl.blogspot.ca/2016/08/thoughts-movie-swiss-army-man-spoilers.html

BLU-RAY / DVD EXTRA CONTENT
While I enjoyed all the extra content on the Blu-Ray / DVD, I really could have done with more! What's there is quite standard stuff, but it is still very interesting, especially the "Behind the Scenes" and the "Audio Commentary". I just think a Swiss Army Man fan would want more -- of everything! lol :)

AUDIO COMMENTARY (movie length)
This commentary was done by both directors (Daniel Scheinert, Daniel Kwan -- a.k.a. the Daniels), production designer Jason Kisardav, and sound mixer/fartist Brent Kiser. I really enjoyed this commentary. The Daniels have such a casual, laid-back tone when talking. Quite often, they would briefly describe how certain scenes were shot. It is totally worth checking out.

BEHIND THE SCENES (16.5 mins)
This segment really could have been much longer! Since most of the effects in Swiss Army Man are practical (i.e. not computer-generated), they could have talked about or showed at length all the "solutions" that kept the scenes practical. Granted, much of this segment was that, but -- I just wanted more, lol. I also would have liked more coverage on the various sets.

It was interesting to find out that four versions of the Manny dummy (Daniel Radcliffe's character) were created, each serving a different purpose in the movie.

Daniel Radcliffe carrying one of his dummies.

Various crew people prepping / checking one of the Manny dummies.

MAKING MANNY (3 mins)
I've actually seen this months ago. It is a featurette on A24's Youtube channel. It is a quick look at the process of making the Manny dummies.

If you haven't yet watched the movie, I wonder if the very
last part of this video would make you wonder, "What? Talk about what???" Lol.

DELETED SCENES (9.5 mins)
There were only a couple deleted scenes, one shot scene but using an alternate music track, and footage of one actor coaching another actor with their lines. Thankfully none of the deleted scenes were vital plot points or character reveals, but they were interesting.

Q&A WITH THE FILM MAKERS (66 mins)
I'm not exactly sure when this took place (maybe during the Sundance festival?), but it is an interview with the Daniels, Brent Kiser, and the composers Robert McDowell and Andy Hull. The interview was done by Dolby, most likely because Swiss Army Man received the 2016 Dolby Family Sound Fellowship, a grant to assist with sound design / production.

Aside from the bits of praise for Dolby Atmos (since it is an interview from Dolby, I can't help but feel there could be some bias involved there), the interview was focused on sound design / composition, which was very neat.

One amusing bit was learning that some of the singing performances had to be "toned down" to be closer to the character's "singing potential".

SET UP: MUSIC-LESS MOVIE WITH INTRO FROM THE FILM MAKERS (movie length)
This wasn't a special feature, but was an audio selection in the "Set Up" section. If you select this option and then play the movie, you will be able to watch the movie with ALL MUSIC TRACKS REMOVED. I personally would have missed this option if I wasn't curious what Swiss Army Man image was used in the "Set Up" section.

The intro from the Daniels just explains why they included this option: pretty much for the heck of it! Lol. They go on to say that watching the movie without the music is quite ruining, but also makes certain scenes very ridiculous and funny. They also say to experience the movie WITH MUSIC FIRST, lol.

I bit the bullet and tried this option out. For the most part, the movie was still okay since acting, writing, cinematography are still strong. Any scene where music was used to enhance the atmosphere, though, suffered a lot, and was pretty amusing. The montage scene is... hahaha.

I wouldn't say this is a must-experience, but I do like that this option is available.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Swiss Army Man -- I highly recommend checking out the DVD or Blu-Ray. There are some amusing Extra Content and the movie itself is just plain awesome. Below are a couple Swiss Army Man-related interviews that I really enjoy. They have spoilers so only check them out if you have already watched the movie.

An interview with the Daniels by Q on CBC. I think they describe
the movie's origin and core very well here.

An interview with the Daniels by Alamo Drafthouse Cinema. This is where
I first learned of the term "fartist". I really like their story of
getting permission to use John Williams' score.

Thanks for reading! Happy Thanksgiving weekend to those in Canada and till next time! :)

BLOG -- Recap of September

Besides the first and last week, September was quite uneventful. I was playing Persona 4 Golden like almost every day, every chance I got -- until I re-subscribed to FFXIV and then I was grinding that a bit endlessly.

Now that I've had a chance to relax (even though my Japan and Fan Expo blogs were fun to write, they took a lot out of me, needing to be so detailed, accurate, and factual), I'm hoping I can continue blogging more regularly in October. *fingers crossed!*

Outings/Events in September:
- Briefly bumped into an old co-worker. It was nice catching up for a few minutes.

- Attended Fan Expo Canada

- A friend-co-worker is no longer my co-worker :(

- September 25: was a really fun, but also sad day. I am still sad. A couple positives is that it seems things may still be okay, and I am just glad that in the end I stayed true to myself. I have no regrets.

- Met up with my sister and cousins.

- Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-I've re-subscribed, but mainly to finish up the Yo-kai event.
-I guess I should just say: I won't lose my soul this time! Lol.

Exposures:
- (Food): Lay's Bacon Poutine Chips -- It was too bacon >_<!

- (Band): Marianas Trench -- Yes, I was exposed to their song "One Love" months ago, but I only started to venture into their other songs this month. I listened to their latest album Astoria and -- wow -- what a mix of catchy, slow, poppy, and emotional tunes. And I like it, for the most part! I think many of their songs have clever, rhythmic lyrics. I really want to attend their concert.

- (TV Show): The Goldbergs -- This is a ridiculous, funny, nostalgic, and sweet show. I just finished watching Season 1. The characters' interactions are so funny sometimes. Barry's description of his perfect woman is hilarious.

- (Mobile App Game): Mystic Messenger -- This has more substance than I originally thought, lol. I initially tried as a light distraction, but I find that there is strategy involved. Also there is a story and characterization. Plus, what app game has voiced phone conversations?? It was a pleasant surprise. I'm currently on Yoosung's route (no surprise that he would end up being the first guy I get). I really want to go through 707's route, but I read that his route is best saved for last due to spoiler content. Lol... darn. :P

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Suicide Squad -- It was okay, but not particularly great. I would have liked to see more story sequences with Harley Quinn and Joker.

- (Movie): Scream 3 -- Not bad. I was really scared when watching this, lol... T_T

- (Anime): Persona 3 The Movie -#2 Midsummer Knight's Dream- -- This was really good. The ending totally did me in, lol... what a song. *tips hat and bows deeply*

- (Anime): Ef - A Tale of Melodies -- It's a bit better than the first season, but... a little over the top at times. Really nice animation, though.

Playing:
- (PSP): Crush -- Finally! It's done. This was on my "Currently Playing" list for the longest time. About halfway through, I was only playing to get more story... and not because the story was amazing -- I was just really curious. My sister ended up looking up how to clear the last two stages; they were just so frustrating. The last stages felt more like platformers than puzzles.

Reading:
- (Novel) Gun Machine by Warren Ellis -- It was much more slow-paced than Ellis' first novel Crooked Little Vein, but it was quite thrilling in the middle. I think I'd like to see this as a movie, but with a more polished ending.

- (Book) Pitch Perfect by Mickey Rapkin -- It was interesting in some parts and dragging in other parts. I personally would have preferred to read the groups' stories fully one at a time instead of shifting to another group every chapter. The movie is just so much more exciting.

Currently...
Playing (not all at once):
- (PS4): Dragon Ball Xenoverse

- (PS4): Hatsune Miku: Project Diva X
- (PS3): Borderlands 2
- (3DS): Story of Seasons

That's it for September. Here are some pics I took this month plus a YouTube video.

Can you spot the bug? Lol.

For once, a fortune that is just supportive! ... hopefully the person
who admires my beauty is NOT a jerk, lol :P'

Funny screenshot from Persona 4 Golden. For reference,
the main character is male and Kanji is a male character.

Amusing screenshot from Mystic Messenger. The text from the
girl avatar was an option I selected.

I noticed this some weeks ago (if you don't see it, there's an egg on the media box!).
The next time I went to this subway station, though, it was gone.
I'm hoping it hatched and somebody heard its chirpings and acted dutifully.

"Dearly Departed" by Marianas Trench. This is one of my favourites from the album.
I can really feel the emotion; it makes me cry almost every time. The bridge also
carries extra meaning, in addition to expressing what it's trying to express
(i.e. clever lyric-writing). I must sing this for karaoke one day!

Thanks for reading! As usual, if you have any questions / comments about anything, feel free. :)

Have a good weekend and till next time :)

BLOG -- Fan Expo Canada 2016

As usual I had a fun time at Fan Expo. I've been blogging about Fan Expo Canada for some years now, and the same things that excited me before still excite me now -- interesting panels; pretty art; cool cosplay. And the occasional autograph if the right guest comes.

I didn't get any autographs for myself, but I did get one for my boss (he was dangling not approving my vacation days for this for soooo long! I had requested the vacation about two months ago and he only approved it one week before the convention, lol...). I was really excited when Cary Elwes was announced as a guest (ahhh, sweet Westley! lol)... so I was super-bummed when he cancelled. He was the only one I would have lined up for this year.

Just like in previous years, Fan Expo was split between the North and South building.

Just to warn you (as I always do): this blog will be quite long. I'll be covering each day of Fan Expo Canada -- what I did, what panels I attended, and any thoughts. That's four days' worth of blogging. I've lumped all my pics of cosplayers into one section. If you want to see just that, search for "Photos of Cosplayers". For the section of what I've bought, search for "My Convention Purchases". :)

The Little Details
Dates of Fan Expo Canada: September 1 - September 4, 2016
Location: Metro Convention Centre (Toronto, Ontario)
Ticket Price Total: $178.50 (Premium admission; Deluxe 4-day admission was $125)

Thursday
Time Attended: 2:00 PM - 7:30 PM
So this year, both Premium and Deluxe attendees were allowed into Fan Expo at 2 PM. Last year I think only Premium attendees were allowed. I think this was a smart move -- at least to reduce the initial line into Fan Expo, which is usually very long.

Fan Expo opened at 4 PM for regular attendees.

My Premium admission swag.

I had one panel today at 6:15 PM, so I had about four hours to roam around the South Dealers room. First I looked through Artists Alley, but very quickly since not many attendees were there. I'm kinda weird where I tend to prefer a crowd in Artists Alley. That way the artists would likely be too busy servicing others to pay attention to me. I don't like eyes on me as I'm looking at their art. I'd feel like I'm giving hope that I will buy something, and then I'd feel so bad if / when I don't. After I went through the Artists Alley, I went through it again, but this time trying to find the booths to artists I had purchased from in past conventions.

One booth I re-visited was Carson-Drew-It. The artist specialized in nice, sometimes cute Dark Souls fanart. Strangely, the artist recognized me, saying something like "You were here last year." Then he told me that this would be his last year at Fan Expo, needing to prioritize other things in his life. He said his site would still be open and I think commissions were, too. I wish him the best!

After re-visiting more booths and buying way too much stuff (four artbooks, one manga volume, and tons of posters), I wandered around the other parts in the Dealers room. I would have hung around the video gaming area, but it was packed as usual.

The only real place of interest for me was a 7-minute escape room. When I stumbled upon it, there was already a long line-up and I was carrying so much stuff. When I was told that individuals would get grouped up with others, I decided to try this tomorrow, when I would have less stuff on me.

After a bit more wandering, I came across a mini set for Fear the Walking Dead. It was a torn airplane setting with two moving zombies inside. You can sit on the airplane seats and get your picture taken. It looked pretty scary, but...

Me (with my face covered) with zombies on the Fear the Walking Dead mini set.
You can't see this, but I was laughing... while freaked out, lol.

Comic Workshop: Writing for Comics 101 -- 6:15 PM
This was a pretty interesting panel. One of the panelists, Jim Zub, was really funny and informative. Jim also teaches at Seneca College so I guess that would make sense for his easy-goingness.

A few things I learned from this panel:

- When writing comics, you are writing to space constraints, not to time constraints. In other words, you keep in mind the amount of pages you can work with, not how much it takes for a reader to experience the whole story.

- If a comic survives three issues and stays out of the red, there's a good chance it may last through its entire run.

- Do not pitch to publishers unless you have more than just a story idea.

- Even if you may want to do more issues, think about how to end the comic in five. This is in case it does not do well and the publisher wants it wrapped up.

Playstation area. I was really curious about Rez. Still on the fence
about whether or not to get VR, though.

So apparently anime guys have huge boobs. I never knew! lol

Friday
Time Attended: 9:45 AM - 6:00 PM
As soon as I got to the convention, I went the autograph area in the North building. My boss asked me to try getting Linda Blair, William Shatner, and Brent Spiner's autographs. Unfortunately nobody knew an exact autograph time for any of them -- I just had to keep checking back. At that, I mentally chucked any notion of getting William Shatner or Brent Spiner's autograph. I just didn't have the time to keep walking to the North building just for a chance of them showing up -- and then possibly dealing with a long line. Most of my time is spent in the South building, either in the Dealers room or at panels.

After that, I went to the South Dealers room and lined up at the escape room. With this escape room, a group of 12 people were allowed in. Then the 12 people would be split into four teams, and each team would be assigned a puzzle to solve. If each team solves their puzzle, we escape the room. If we don't, then we get infected and become vampires.

It was a fun experience. There was a helper at each puzzle giving hints along the way. I was happy to contribute a little bit to solving my team's puzzle. We had to add / subtract a series of numbers and nobody felt up for it, so I did it (lol, the stress of adding / subtracting numbers correctly in a set time). I had one qualm with my team's puzzle: at one point the helper gave us a hint and I was wondering, Could we have found out about this information any other way? It didn't look like it...

Every team except one solved their puzzle, so we all got infected. So be wary -- I'm a vampire now... ooOOOOoOOOOOoooOoooOoO... (f',,,')f~~~ ... lol. According to the helpers, there was a 30% success rate for the escape room.

Sketch Duel: Andrew Robinson vs. Tim Sale -- 1:15 PM

Yay! Finally I get to attend another Sketch Duel. The last Sketch Duel I attended was four years ago. My friend Brent Chittenden was moderating the panel, and he did a swell job. Unlike the last Sketch Duel I attended, the artists were assigned to draw one character for the whole panel. And while they were drawing, audience members would ask questions and the artists would answer. Then at the end, the finished drawings would get be given away via random draw. The artists were assigned to draw Two-Face.

It was a really nice, fun experience. I totally need to attend more of these in the future.

By Andrew Stevenson. Wow!

By Tim Sale. Wow!

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

With over two hours to spare before the next panel, I trekked to the North building to see if Linda Blair was around. There was a medium-length line for her so I lined up. Still nobody knew when she would actually show up. They only knew she was around for photo ops about an hour ago. I had a book with me so I was able to pass the time (remember -- bring books or something to keep busy if you anticipate lining up for something and you are by yourself).

The only notable thing here -- at least for me -- was that I was able to help somebody a little bit.

One person in line (she was a couple people ahead of me) pricked herself by resting her hand on a handrail bar covered in fabric. I guess the pin holding the fabric together got moved to an undesirable position.

When I saw that, I went searching in my purse and brought out a Cars-themed band-aid (they were on sale at the time). I held it out to her and asked, "Do you need a band-aid?"

She was surprised and accepted it. She asked if I had... I forgot what she exactly said, but it was a product to disinfect the wound.

I said, "No, but..." and then I dug in my purse again and took out some Polysporin.

Again she looked surprised, and then asked, "Are you accident-prone?"

I laughed and said no. She thanked me a lot and I said you're welcome, and then went back to reading my book.

Lol... my good deed for the day, I guess. I hope her hand doesn't get infected. That would be such a terrible experience.

About 15 minutes later she showed up. From that point, it took about 35 minutes to get her autograph. It costed $40 -- which my boss will pay back, lol.

Horror Writing 101 -- 4:45 PM
This panel was okay. The more I think about it, though, the more I think this panel could have fit as just a Writing 101 panel instead of a Horror Writing 101 panel. Much of the advice given could be applied to writing in general. Much of it I kinda already knew as well, like researching into what genres / types of works your desired publishers publish before sending off your stuff to them.

They did provide this resource: The Horror Tree. It notes when some places are accepting horror-based submissions.

Armored Batman.

Green R2-D2. This moved around and made electronic catcall sounds.
At least it sounds like a catcall to me, lol. I was a little flattered when it
approached me a little and did its sound. Maybe it liked my skirt, lol.

Saturday
Time Attended: 9:45 AM - 6:00 PM
I just went straight to South building and waited for my next panel. I usually like lining up for panels at least an hour earlier, even if a line isn't really necessary. I just want dibs on the seating inside.

From the Screen to the Page: Comic Book Adaptations -- 11:30 AM

This was an interesting and entertaining panel. One of the panelists was Ty Templeton and he was really funny (as usual). Before the panel started, he was talking very lightly with another panelist about his last heart attack. Gosh -- maybe I should try getting Ty's autograph next year... >_>''

This panel was about the experience of adapting movies, shows, video games into comic books. Here are some things I remember from the panel:

-When adapting, besides the main goal of pleasing the company you're adapting the work for, you're also aiming to please the fans.

-Usually there is more free rein with characters that have little backstory. With well-established, major characters, though, you usually shouldn't deviate from the original source.

-Sometimes celebrities have no idea what they look like so be prepared for feedback if you are the artist.

-Sonic fans tend to be especially passionate -- pointing any and all errors, even years later.

Celebrity Q&A: Gillian Anderson -- 2:30 PM

This is the third year that I've attended Gillian's Q&A, and it's always nice and fun. She is still the same playful, honest, modest person, and I like it.

The Q&A itself was quite entertaining. One person asked Gillian if he could show her his Scully tattoo that was on his upper thigh. She said yes, so he proceeded to undo his pants. I couldn't see the tattoo since some heads were blocking my way.

Another person asked Gillian if there were any funny stories to share when filming X-Files. Then Gillian told us how one day she and David (Mulder) were in a car and she accidentally backed into a tree. It was minor and nobody seemed hurt. But the next day on set she saw David and he was wearing a huge neck brace. Gillian was mortified. Then it turned out to be a prank, and everybody was in on it.

Just like last year, at the end she auctioned off something for her charity. This time it was the T-shirt she was wearing. Somebody offered their soul. Another offered their first-born, and Gillian responded to the latter with something like "I already have too many first-borns."

Once the amount reached around $1100, it became a bidding war between two people. When it reached $2000, Gillian encouraged the other bidder to not bid any more, saying $2000 is a lot of money and that she was starting to feel bad / guilty. The end bid was $2100, and both the winning and losing bidder were invited backstage to meet Gillian.

Board Game Design Pro Panel -- 4:45 PM
I think I might have attended this panel years ago, since I recognized a couple of the panelists. This was really neat. I'm not sure if I would ever make a board game myself, but it was interesting to hear about the process and things that go with creating one and getting it market-ready.

Some things I took away from this:

-For those living in Toronto, the third night of every month is "Game Designer Night" at Snakes & Lattes. It is an event where creators can bring their board game prototype and have others try it out and possibly get feedback. I think I want to try attending this one day and try out the games!

-Playtesting is an integral part in the board game-making process. Getting feedback is a great way to see what works and what's broken. It is also important to do blind playtesting where players get no aid from the creator and learn how to play from reading the rules. It's a good way to see if the rules are written clear enough.

-There is never really an issue of plagiarism. Even with another person wanting to take your idea, the board game design and details would most likely end up being very different. Also, the board game market is very niche so there isn't much profit in it. Along that note, there is almost no point in copyrighting or patenting your board game since doing that would be costly.

-If you plan to pitch your idea to a publisher, it is best to have some kind of prototype. An idea is just an idea until there is a board and objects to interact with.

Omg -- somebody saluted them! D: lol.

Sunday
Time Attended: 10:30 AM - 3:30 PM
So... Fan Expo ended at 5 PM, but I was feeling very under the weather today so I left right after the third panel. Lol... because of this I didn't get the final shot that I usually get at Fan Expo (it's a shot of the attendees leaving the convention en masse).

Comic Book Legal & Law -- 11:15 AM
I attended this panel years ago, and it had the same wealth of knowledge this time as last time. If you ever have a chance to attend this panel at future Fan Expo conventions or at other conventions, I'd highly recommend it. A few things I learned:

-In the US (at the time of this writing), a joint creator can license / sell rights without the other creator's consent or knowledge. In Canada (at the time of this writing), all creators must agree before selling / licensing rights.

-In the US, California is the most creator-friendly. I'm not exactly sure what this means, but that would explain why many studios are located in California.

-While Superman is due to enter public domain in 2033, his "heat vision" power won't be since it was developed 15 years after Superman was created.

Comic Workshop: Starting Your Comics -- 12:45 PM

This panel was okay. It focused on creating indie comics in print and digital form. The main thing I took away from this is to not start selling your comics at Fan Expo or other major convention. A table for major conventions can cost $600 or more. It's best to start with smaller events to build awareness and a fanbase. A couple Toronto-based events mentioned were Canzine and Bit Bazaar.

Comic Book Bootcamp: How to Write a Story Someone Will Read -- 2:15 PM
Ty Templeton did this panel and it was enjoyable. It was very similar to another panel he did in previous conventions called "How to create a story in an hour". One thing he stressed was "[Unless you are already well-established], no one wants your story!" So you need a hook. Then a second plot. Then a few set pieces. And more. It was really fun and informative.

Maybe I'll attend one of his actual bootcamp sessions one day.

Misc. Photos for Sunday
None this time.

Overall Thoughts
Fan Expo Canada 2016 was really fun. From all the panels I attended, I guess I am a bit equipped or informed to try creating my own comics, lol. I'm really glad I got to attend a Sketch Duel -- but I missed on attending any AMV-related thing. For cosplay this year, there were tons of Harley Quinns, the Suicide Squad version. Even really young girls were dressed up as her, walking around with bats. I also saw pokemon trainers around, from PokemonGO and from the regular video games.

Maybe next year I'll attend some panels for cosplay building -- I do wanna try cosplaying again, lol.

My Convention Purchases
I stuck to same $800 budget as last year, and it was a good amount. I stayed under but I was getting close to the limit this time.

So I'm saying this again, but when buying fan stuff, I often have this frame of mind:

1. Does the art style align with my tastes?
2. Does this work express the kind of fandom that expresses me? (like, if I saw a poster of Zuko and Katara holding hands and gently smiling, I might get it, because it expresses how I feel about their relationship -- a sense of deep understanding for each other)
3. Is this a piece of work that will evoke something in me every time I see it?

This year, I realized that I am a fan of certain artists. I should have known this before, always buying stuff from Shilin Huang and Xiao Bai when I see them -- but I didn't realize I was a fan of more artists, lol. My budget isn't just to spend on what I like -- it's also to support those I like. Lol... this revelation -- why am I realizing this just now? I should have already known this *shakes head at myself*.

This year I discovered a new artist Justin Currie (ChasingArtwork). His stuff seems pretty cool, so I hope I get to see more of it in the future.

For what I've bought that I haven't yet watched / experienced the series for, I'll note it like this: (*)

Here is what I bought (if anybody could help me fill in the blanks, it'd be greatly appreciated!):

Felt pokeballs and Pikachu. There are actually magnets inside each one
and I was given another magnet so I can attach them to my clothes.

Inari plushie. It looks yummy, lol.

T-shirt of Solaire from Dark Souls (*).

Kitty T-shirt + Dark Souls tote bag.

Artbooks from Jamie Tyndall. The artbooks feature
various female characters in elaborate outfits.

Mini prints of Pokemon in Avatar: the Last Airbender outfits, Kill la Kill, Persona,
and an Akira memo pad. I think Pikachu looks really cute here, lol.

PokemonGO female trainers...? My first thought was they were female recreations
of the faction masters, but I'm not sure anymore, lol.
I don't know who the character is on the right.

Saber from Fate/Stay series.

I don't know either of these characters... (*).

Posters from Shilin Huang.

Another poster; Toccata II artbook; Shilin Huang's manga Carciphona Vol. 5.
I still need to read the series.

Overwatch characters!

More Overwatch characters.

Mushi-shi! Seeing Mushi-shi fanart is so rare. I got two of this.

Princess Tutu and Fakir from Princess Tutu; Chibi Usa from Sailor Moon.

I think this is an original work. I actually have very adverse feelings
when looking at this, but there's something about it...

Roboticized Deadpool; roboticized Gundam Wing.

Roboticized Sephiroth and Cloud from FFVII; roboticized Avengers; Mononoke Hime.

This is my favourite of posters I bought. I love the idea and atmosphere.
There is actually a short comic associated with this poster.
You can read the story here.

Justin's book Cassie and Tonk, and Volume 2 of his artbook.
The volume 1 artbook is long out of print.

Some business cards.

Now I can sit back, relax, and enjoy my vacation (I usually take a vacation after Fan Expo to recover).

Thank you again and have a great rest of the week! :)
