REVIEW/THOUGHTS [ANIME] -- My Love Story!!

Number of Episodes: 24 [25-ish minutes each episode]
Language(s) Watched: Japanese with English subtitles
Licensed? (As of this entry): YES (Not yet released in North America)
Genre(s): Romance, Comedy, Drama
Overall Impression: This is the most sweetest yet ridiculous series I've seen in a long while. I love it!

SPOILER ALERT WARNING!!
This review will contain some spoilers -- or rather, there will be a "Spoilers" section at the end of the review to go into further detail about certain things. There may still be slight spoilers throughout the review, but I've tried my best to keep them at a minimum.

PERSONAL STANDING (Pre-exposures, thoughts, etc.)
So the first time I heard about this series was last year around November. I was browsing around Rightstuf's Holiday Sale, and saw that the manga series was on sale. I looked it up on Anime News Network, but decided against buying it, despite the general high ratings. I usually don't buy manga these days unless all the volumes have been released in North America.

Then fast forward to around early January this year. A friend told me about the anime series and how it was so romantic and sweet that he had to watch it with somebody. After some thought, I suggested, "If it'll help you watch the series, let's watch it one day." Since this friend didn't live in Toronto, "watching together" meant watching it at the same time on Crunchyroll with Skype running.

A few days later I saw a Facebook posting from another friend saying that he just started watching My Love Story!! and was enjoying it. Then a few days after that, I got an e-mail from Crunchyroll saying that starting February 1st, old titles in their catalog will be available to Premium members only. Not yet ready to become a Premium member (I still have lots of physical anime DVDs/Blu-Rays in my collection), I thought, 'I better watch My Love Story!! while I have the chance...'

I watched the first four episodes with my friend on Skype. Then he "chickened out" and I watched the rest on my own, hahaha.

STORY
My Love Story!! follows Takeo Gouda, a tall, burly guy, who is very kind-hearted, but is very unlucky in love. He is used to seeing his love interests fall for Makoto Sunakawa, his good-looking friend. Then he saves Rinko Yamato from a groper on a train... Annnd that's all I'm saying.

The overall story is very basic. The presentation of it, though, I think is really nicely done. There is one main story line and a lot of side stories.

THE SWEETNESS
My Love Story!! is one of the sweetest anime series I've watched in a long time. I think the music, the characters, their genuine feelings, and that even the smallest actions can bring forth a wave of pretty sparkles really contribute to this. I honestly haven't felt so warm and fuzzy over a series in such a long time.

An example of a small action bringing forth sweet sparkles.

THE COMEDY
Some of the comedic moments and situations are very over-the-top and often unexpected. A lot of it comes from Takeo's facial expressions or his gut responses or even his reasoning for some things. I'll mention one of my favourite comedic moments in the "Spoilers" section.

THE DRAMA / SERIOUSNESS / RELATABILITY
Despite this series being so sweet, there was also a lot of drama in it. Although... I think the drama came in ways that weren't really expected for a series like this. There were a couple "usual" situations like unrequited love. However, I think a lot of the drama comes from the internal struggles for each character and how they get addressed.

I'll fess up. I cried in almost every episode... and it was not because I thought, 'What's going to happen? Will they be okay? Are they going to do this? Are they going to do that?' It's because I thought, 'I understand that feeling. I understand that desire. I understand that fear. I understand that situation. I understand...'. I was able to relate to and empathize with a lot of what the characters were going through. I think this adds a bit of realism to the series, which I appreciate. I'll mention some of the moments I related to / empathized with the most in the "Spoilers" section.

CHARACTERS
From left to right: Makoto Sunakawa, Rinko Yamato, Takeo Gouda

There are many characters in My Love Story!!, the main ones being Takeo, Yamato, and Sunakawa. I think it's a bit rare for me, but I like almost all the characters in the series. Even if they may pose as a potential "obstacle", I was able to relate and understand their actions. I'll say something else about the characters overall in the "Spoilers" section -- something that I really like about them.

For the main characters, I really like them. Yamato is super adorable and Takeo is so kind-hearted and great. I also really like Sunakawa. I love his loyalty to Takeo, as well as his quiet but observant nature. I don't know if I would fall for him like most of the girls in this series -- but I would really love to be his friend.

MUSIC
The music is very nice and calming in My Love Story!! Many of the tracks are soft and lullaby-like -- very fitting for the overall sweet nature of the anime. There are also some goofy-sounding tracks and a couple intense tracks ('cuz intense things happen in the anime). All of it worked in the series. The opening and ending themes are also really nice and catchy.

Here, listen to a couple tracks if you like.

"Story of Mind ~Little Love~"
This makes me feel all warm and fuzzy.

"Nagai Kage"
It's really subtle, but works really well for the serious moments.

MY LOVE STORY!! AND THE MANGA
This is a placeholder in case I get my hands on the manga.

MY LOVE STORY!! AND THE LIVE-ACTION MOVIE
This is a placeholder in case I ever get the chance to watch the live-action movie (with English subtitles!). I really hope it gets licensed.

CLOSING THOUGHTS
If you can get access to My Love Story!!, I highly recommend checking it out. It's currently available on Crunchyroll for Premium members. I am eagerly waiting for it to be released on DVD / Blu-Ray, 'cuz this series deserves to be in my collection. It has that good mix of sweetness, seriousness, and ridiculousness that I like in an anime series. :)

Thanks for reading! If you want some more input about something I didn't cover, feel free to ask. :)

So I'll do the scrolly thing and the "Spoilers" section will appear after that. Then I'll add some more scrolly things after the "Spoilers" section in case anybody wants to comment, but not see the spoilers.

SPOILERS

I'll mention one of my favourite comedic moments.

Well... my favourite comedic moment was in episode 6... when Takeo tried practicing kissing with Sunakawa. It was totally unexpected and I couldn't help but laugh crazily through the whole thing. Granted, if this happened in real life, I would react very differently. But in the world of anime -- and with Takeo and Sunakawa being really good friends -- hahaha....

I kept thinking, 'Sunakawa can have any girl he wants... he can kiss any girl he wants... but his first kiss is like this... even a hot guy like him can suffer...'.

Oh... poor Sunakawa!! @_@''

I'll mention some of the moments I related to / empathized with the most.

There are actually a lot of these moments, and I'm not sure how to start listing them... but let's see...

-Takeo's feelings of inadequacy: I really felt for Takeo in the first episode when he thought that Yamato liked Sunakawa and was thankful to Sunakawa for being saved on the train. When Takeo voiced in his head, 'I'm the one who helped you out, you know...', it really affected me. I know that feeling all too well -- doing things for others but not getting recognized / acknowledged / appreciated in the end -- and feeling that somebody else got recognized for it instead.

Then close to the end of the series where Takeo was seriously thinking that another guy may be a better match for Yamato... I understood that feeling too -- thinking that you might not be worthy of the one you like.

-Takeo's misunderstanding: When Takeo decided to set aside his feelings and to help Yamato and Sunakawa get together, a lot of emotions went through me.

1: Takeo's self-sacrifice to put somebody else's happiness over his own. It is noble but so sad at the same time.
2: Takeo thinking that his emotions would make Yamato uncomfortable, kinda expressing to me that he is not good enough. During those episodes, I kept thinking, 'You are worth it!'
3: The pain Yamato must feel of being encouraged from the one she likes to go after somebody else. It is about the same as being rejected / not being considered.

-Yamato's worries: Yamato's worries of Takeo one day not liking her because of whatever reason, or of other girls liking Takeo and trying to get him -- ahh, I know that feeling too well... all too well unfortunately. >_<''

-Amami's feelings: There was a lot with Amami's situation that I couldn't really relate to, but when she described her feelings and the pain of them not being reciprocated, I understood it. It is quite painful to think about somebody affectionately, wondering what they could be doing or thinking at that moment, and then realizing that from the other person, such thoughts about you aren't going through their head.

I'll say something else about the characters overall
-- something that I really like about them.

So what I really liked about the characters overall, was that almost none of them really stirred up drama between Takeo and Yamato. Besides Ichinose (and I didn't really like that guy at all, lol -- mishearing so many things) and Oda to an extent, any character with unrequited feelings understood well the strong relationship and happiness between Takeo and Yamato and wouldn't get between them. Not that I had any doubt in the bond between Takeo and Yamato -- I mean both did have to turn down somebody at one point -- but it definitely made watching the anime much more pleasant.

I'll probably mention this again in a future blog, but even though I am a hopeless romantic and enjoy watching romantic anime from time to time, I really hate love triangles / circles / squares, etc -- something that I often think is present in romantic anime. My mindset is, if you already like somebody, make it clear so the other person isn't waiting and hoping. I also really hate characters who try to take the other person away even when that person expresses they are in a relationship and are happy. I find that very selfish and inconsiderate.

Both those aspects aren't in My Love Story!!, which I am really thankful for.

That's it for the spoilers. Thanks again for reading and feel free to comment :D

BLOG -- Recap of January

So January was really busy. I've already started trying to work on my resolutions... so I've been very hermit-like when I'm not working. Well, besides the Skype sessions, though that is also related to my resolutions.

Outings/Events in January:
- Started having one-on-one Skype sessions with a friend to try learning Japanese and programming. Not really sure what's sticking so far.

- I let my FFXIV subscription run out for about two weeks.

- Shareplayed multiple games on the PS4 with a friend. That was really fun, though I felt a little bad / sadistic that the first game I shareplayed was Super Meat Boy -- and I gave him the controller without explaining anything, ha... ^^'''

Tried a real-life room escape for the 4th time. After getting a time extension, we got out, wooot!

- Stayed over at my sister's place x1.

- David Bowie and Alan Rickman's passing. I was very sad when I heard this...

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-The mog house for the FC is built!
-My crafter's gears have been pentamelded! I kinda feel like I can craft almost anything now... though I am a bit lazy with gathering materials.

Exposures:
- (3DSPokemon Picross -- This is another of Nintendo's free games that have in-game purchases. I really enjoy Picross games so I didn't mind spending some money on it.

- (PS4) Dragon Quest Builders (demo) -- I was able to try out the Japanese demo, and it was really fun. Unfortunately, the game is very text-heavy and I couldn't read / understand much of it. If it was localized, I would definitely get it.

- (Mobile) Neko Atsume: Kitty Collector -- This is really cute. I spent a bit of money to support the developer.

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Jim Henson's Labyrinth -- This was interesting. For a movie that's pretty old now, it can be pretty creepy / unnerving sometimes, but also creative. I actually felt more for Jareth than for Sarah.

- (Movie): Seven Psychopaths -- This was an experience. I liked some of the stories in here. Not sure if I would watch it again, though.

- (Anime): Rozen Maiden -- I wouldn't call it a must-watch... but it is a nice series with some really good moments.

- (Anime): Rozen Maiden: Träumend -- This was better than the first series. Still not a must-watch, but I really liked the last few episodes. I think Shinku and Jun's relationship is really sweet.

- (Anime): Rozen Maiden: Ouvertüre -- I enjoyed this about the same as with the second series.

- (Anime): My Love Story!!

Playing:
- (3DS): Senran Kagura Burst -- I actually beat this in December, but I forgot to mention it. I really enjoyed this game. While I wasn't a fan of many of the fanservice-y transformations (it was just too obvious that it was there to provide fanservice -- not very tasteful in my opinion), there is definitely substance behind all the "plot", and nice characterizations.

- (PS4): Contrast -- This game's been downloaded in my PS4 since the PS4's launch, and now I've finally gotten around to playing it. Besides some minor frustrations with some of the puzzles, I really enjoyed it. The gameplay mechanics felt kinda unique and fresh to me.

- (Mobile): Dragon Quest I -- Not as grind-heavy as I remembered it way back on the NES. I re-played it as a refresher on the story, but... the story was just as I remembered it, hahaha.

That's it for January. Here are a couple of pics I took this month.

A late Christmas gift from a friend.
I really like the hand-drawn pic of Ace and Gohan. Ace looks sooo cool and HOT, hahaha
(both ways intended) ;)

This particular story was pretty funny.

Thanks for reading! My weekly blog will go up later today. As usual, if you have any questions / comments about anything, feel free. :)

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- Some Movies I Think Are Good But Would Probably Never Watch Again

This past week, I watched a "Questions & Answers" video on Youtube, and one of the questions intrigued me. The question was:

"Have you ever seen a movie that you really didn't like, but you can't disagree that it is a good movie?"

Once I heard that question my mind screamed, 'Yes I have!!'. Then my mind screamed, 'Yes! Somebody else who also has had such an experience!'. I don't know why -- but I think it's pretty rare to experience this. I remember one time recommending a movie to a friend and I said, "It's a good movie -- but I don't like it." My friend gave me a puzzled look, as if to ask, "How could you say it's a good movie if you don't like it?"

I guess often when I watch a movie (or anything really), I'm watching from at least two different angles: an objective angle and a personal angle. The objective angle would be my critical eye, seeing if things were structured nicely, if the acting was good, if the animation was done well (if it was animated), etc. The personal angle would be me just seeing if I'm enjoying it.

This is how I sometimes find myself thinking, "This movie is really nicely done!" but also "I... can't watch this again..."

Below are some such movies for me. I would recommend almost all these titles, so if you are curious about them, feel free to check them out. From looking at my short list, there seems to be a couple common factors.

1. I can't re-watch movies that are too dark or grim -- When the movie's tone is consistently dark throughout the movie and I feel no sense of hope, it really brings me down. I tend to be very empathetic so I need to have some kind of light in my movies. Otherwise I will be stuck in that dark / grim state for a while.

2. I can't re-watch movies that are too scary -- Well, scary movies tend to scare me, so I don't think this needs much explanation.

My List (with whatever commentary. The list will probably grow as I watch more movies.)
Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street -- As much as I enjoyed the acting and the singing, the atmosphere was really way too dark and grim. I'm not even sure if I can listen to the music again, even though I've had the soundtrack for years now. From the actual musical, I've always liked "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" musical number, but the vocal version never made it to the movie, hahahaha... *sigh*

Watchmen -- I left the theatre feeling completely emotionally drained. Even though the movie offered some kind of light / hope, I took it to express something negative so I was stuck in a state of darkness for a while. This movie... really depressed me, lol.

21 Grams -- So... even though this movie was really well done, I don't think I would actually recommend it to anybody. I personally don't think anything can be gained from watching this movie, except for maybe feeling that your own life and situation is possibly (hopefully) better than the characters'.

The Mist -- This was way too grim for me. I still think about it from time to time. I would really like to re-write the last act. You can read my review of it here:

The Descent -- I'm sure some would contest to this, but I found this movie way too scary. I kinda think, well, that the premise is kinda plausible. I really doubt that every inch of this planet has been explored... so there's bound to be some unknown places... with unknown... things... Though I was able to watch it one more time after the initial viewing. I bought the DVD, watched it with my sister, and then gave her the DVD.

Honourable Mention
Silent Hill -- This is placed as an honourable mention because I don't think many people actually think Silent Hill is a good movie overall. For me, I think it is a really nicely done movie for video game movie adaptations. I think the movie captured the sombre atmosphere of the video game very well. But -- I hate its unfaithfulness to the video game's story and characters. I guess this wouldn't be an issue if I never had my sister play the first game in order for me to see its story. But I did and I was hoping for certain character relations and themes from the video game to make its way to the movie adaptation. They didn't and I hate the movie because of it, hahaha.

That's it for this blog! Have you ever watched a movie where you thought it was good, but would never want to watch again, for whatever reasons?

Thanks for reading! Take care, stay warm, and have a great week! :)

BLOG -- My Movie-Watching History (in Theatres) [2015]

Here is my movie-watching (in theatres) history for 2015. I didn't get to watch too many different movies this year... but I guess when you see how many times I watched Kingsman: The Secret Service, you may understand why, hahaha. Another reason why I didn't get to watch too many movies this year is because... well... timing.

Maybe it is just me, but I've noticed that movies overall are getting longer these days. I think average movie runtimes used to be around 90 minutes, but now they are often close to 2 hours long or longer. Now, I'm not exactly complaining about the movie length -- if I enjoy a movie I would definitely want to be immersed in that world for as long as possible. But... it does sometimes mess with the times movies are shown in theatres. Where a movie may have been shown between 6-ish to 7-ish PM (ideal movie-watching time for me after work), now it may be shown around 7:45 PM or later. So to do a bit of math for myself... if a movie's show time is at 7:45 PM... add around 30 minutes for trailers and ads (8:15 PM)... add the movie run time -- let's say 2 hours (10:15 PM)... wait till the end of credits to see if there are any special scenes (10:20 PM)... then add about an hour for me to get home (11:20 PM). Getting home past 11 PM on a weekday is just a bit too late for me, especially if I am watching a movie by myself.

If you are wondering why I don't just watch movies on a weekend, well, it's not very convenient for me where I live. Unless I was planning on doing other things like shopping or hanging out with friends, I'd rather stay at home and play video games on a weekend.

Now... even though I've covered these throughout the year in my end-of-month blogs, here are all the movies I've watched in theatres for 2015, with additional commentary for most, if not for all.

SPOILER ALERT WARNING!!
Since I will be mentioning a good number of movies in this blog, some of them will contain spoilers. Any movie that will contain a spoiler will be marked.

2015

MOVIE: 50 Shades of Grey
DATE: February 13, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): ***

COMMENTS: It was kinda cheesy, but I enjoyed the movie. It was interesting to see how Grey wanted to control Steele, but it ended up being the other way around. The humour was unexpected at times, which was nice. I guess I should mention that I've never read the books, so I watched this with as open a mind as possible.

MOVIE: Kingsman: The Secret Service [x5]
DATE: March 3, 2015
DATE: March 6, 2015
DATE: March 14, 2015
DATE: April 7, 2015
DATE: May 16, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): *****

COMMENTS: This is the first movie I’ve ever watched where I wanted to watch it again the next day. It was also the first time I ever fell head over heels in love with a celebrity (Colin Firth). I LOVE Harry Hart and everything he stands for.

You can read my review of it here: http://ironixgirl.blogspot.ca/2015/03/reviewthoughts-movie-kingsman-secret.html

*********************************************************************

MOVIE: Cinderella
DATE: April 28, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): ****

COMMENTS: It was very enjoyable. This was my first time watching a Cinderella movie -- I never saw the animated one, even though I wanted to. I think Cinderella had a lot of character. The fairy godmother was kinda meh though.

*********************************************************************

MOVIE: Pitch Perfect 2
DATE: May 15, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): **

COMMENTS: Only the musical performances and a few scenes were worth the watch. Everything else wasn’t really enjoyable for me. It is too bad. I really enjoyed the first movie.

You can read my review of it here: http://ironixgirl.blogspot.ca/2015/05/reviewthoughts-movie-pitch-perfect-2.html

*********************************************************************

MOVIE: Avengers: Age of Ultron [SPOILER]
DATE: June 16, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): ***

COMMENTS: It was enjoyable, but not as enjoyable as the first Avengers movie. Some of the scenes felt choppy and disjointed. I really didn’t like how Iron Man was portrayed, implying that he doesn’t know the difference between world peace and world destruction (if this is how he really is as a character, somebody please tell me). He’s still my favourite Avenger, and I still think he takes things very hard and cares so much about others.

As for Black Widow, I enjoyed her romance with Hulk. I think it adds to her character – that she can care for somebody in that way.

*********************************************************************

MOVIE: Mad Max: Fury Road
DATE: June 17, 2105
RATING (OUT OF 5): *****

COMMENTS: This was a crazy, but fun movie. Tons of actions. Lots of crazy characters. And I liked Nicholas Hoult’s character despite him having such shriveled lips. The craziest thing was the guitar player. Like… really? You have to have a traveling minstrel when you chase somebody? I didn’t like Max as much here, compared to the previous Mad Max movies. Furiosa was really good, though.

*********************************************************************

MOVIE: Ant-Man
DATE: August 11, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): ****

COMMENTS: This was really enjoyable. The humour felt fresh and nostalgic at the same time. The story also grabbed me.

*********************************************************************

MOVIE: Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2
DATE: December 8, 2015
RATING (OUT OF 5): ***

COMMENTS: The acting was really good. I just personally did not like its faithfulness to the book. Mockingjay was my least favourite book out of the trilogy.

Movies I wanted to watch in theatres but missed:

Tomorrowland
Inside Out
