BLOG (PERSONAL) -- My Music Timeline [Part 3 -- 2001 - 2003]

So here is Part 3 of my Music Timeline. You can check out the last two parts here:

As mentioned in the last two parts, when it comes to music my general line of thinking is this: A song and its singer are two different entities. I can like a song even if I don't like or care about the singer. This can also be applied to songs and TV shows / series.

Overview of 2001 - 2003

So between 2001 and 2003, a couple things happened that greatly shifted my exposure to music:

1. My Music-Vocal class in school had a Musical unit for part of the year
2. I joined the school's anime club

While growing up, I always had a curiosity for musicals, but never had the chance to really look into it until I had to for school. The major assignment for that unit was to perform a song from a musical. Wanting to sing a song I had a strong attachment to, I searched around to find what that song could be.

I listened to musical soundtracks at the public library. I borrowed and watched whatever movie-musicals I could find. I even borrowed sheet music and played the melody on a piano at home. Through my searching, I got particularly interested in Chess. It's a musical that involves chess-playing and some politics. Hopefully I'll be able to see it performed one day. For my assignment, I ended up singing Anthem from Chess.

Joining the school's anime club was a major turning point in my music timeline. Now, I did have interest in anime before joining the club (I had a secret love for Dragon Ball years ago when it first aired on TV). But -- it wasn't a very strong interest. Before joining the club, I only had one friend who liked anime and she was off at another school. 

Joining the anime club was like opening the door to a whole new world. My first friend in the club was a Dragon Ball fan, too, and we had many fun conversations about the series, as well as dreaming up scenarios with our "claimed boyfriend" (she claimed Trunks before I could, so I settled for Gohan -- which actually worked out well for me. Nerds are awesome <3). 

With her and a few other friends, my anime experience was almost like an adventure. We exposed each other constantly to new things -- either talking about any new series we were reading or watching, sharing websites that had such content, or sharing the series' lovely music. Sometimes we would also gather after school and watch a series together. I was exposed to my first shounen ai that way (Gravitation -- That series has such good music). I was also shown shops that carried anime products (back then, anime wasn't so mainstream). One of the shops had a wall full of anime soundtracks, and I kinda went wild on that, even sometimes buying soundtracks for series my friends have watched, but I haven't. I would find out years later that those soundtracks were actually bootlegs. :(

With websites that had download links for anime tracks (please don't judge me too harshly -- I didn't know how else to get the exposure), I decided to download indiscriminately. This meant I sometimes downloaded music tracks from series I didn't even know existed. My reasoning was, Why pass on it and risk regretting that I never got it? This was how I discovered X-Japan. 

It was late one night and I was working on an assignment. I had downloaded X-Japan's song days ago and it was on my playlist. I wasn't really paying too much attention since I was focused on my assignment. But then around the 4th time through, I noticed it: the song was in English! When I heard the actual lyrics, I was hit with this sadness. I don't know how to describe it, but it was an overwhelming feeling -- maybe of loneliness? Whatever it was, I connected to the song and the band immediately.

X-Japan became one of my go-to bands through those few years. I strove to listen to all of their songs, often singing along to the ones with English lyrics. The songs' sadness and pain really spoke to me back then. I think it helped express the pain and sadness I had in my early years, even though the songs' content weren't exactly related to what I went through. The sorrowful music was enough to connect me.

As for "Western" music (music that's known in North America), I didn't expose myself to too many new tunes. I stopped listening to the radio. I was way too focused on exposing myself to more anime music. I did, however, discover one way of still exposing myself to some "Western" music: AMVs! My first exposure to AMVs was in 2003. 

I think that's it for 2001-2003. I was also exposed to a bit of video game music, but I'll get into that during the next entry (whenever that will be). Also, I'll mention a new role I had that increased my exposure to anime music exponentially!

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- My Music Timeline [Part 2 -- 1997 - 2000]

So here is Part 2 of my Music Timeline (you can check out the first part here: http://ironixgirl.blogspot.ca/2013/09/blog-personal-my-music-timeline-part-1.html). I may just be listing 4 years here, but believe me, so many things happened! I was exposed to so many new musics and artists. 

At that time, I held this line of thought about music (I more or less still think this way): A song and its singer are two different entities. I can like a song even if I don't like or care about the singer.

Overview of 1997 - 2000

So between 1997 and 2000, the following happened that upped my exposure to music, like, 1000-fold:

-I got a stereo with a radio (and started listening to the radio)
-I started watching the CHUM Chart Top 30 every weekend when it aired on CityTV (I don't know if this still happens. I doubt it)
-I got a hold of a CD player (it was my sister's)
-I had an "allowance" (AKA my weekly lunch money) and I discovered a shop that sold used music albums
-Some of my friends at the time were musically inclined (to mainstream musics)

And there ya have it. My music exposures came from every which way. Well, it was more like: radio, and word-of-mouth / "peer pressure". If I really liked a song I heard on the radio or if my friends really liked the group / artist, I would usually go out and buy the album, further exposing myself to more songs. 

It was through radio and my friends in 1997-1999 that I found myself swimming in a plethora of boy bands (ahh, that imagery is now dancing merrily in my head... ;) ). The sweet, romantic lyrics -- the catchy tunes -- the adorable, cute guys (!!)... those boy bands were quite the treat! :) And when I say boy bands, I'm referring to The Backstreet Boys, 98°, Savage Garden (well, a boy duo), Westlife, BBMak, The Moffatts, and *NSYNC (though I never found Justin Timberlake cute or attractive... that was like my little secret back then ^.^''). Hanson never really made an impression on me (sorry guys). I think it had to do with their long hair (I was young back then -- please don't judge me too harshly!).

Spice Girls was also really big at the time, and one of my friends was really into their music. Despite me initially thinking, This is "girly" stuff -- I don't want to be a part of it, I ended up genuinely liking some of their tunes. I even bought Geri Halliwell's solo album and Mel C's solo album. 

Then in the Summer of 1999, I re-connected with one my old friends, who then took me down another musical journey. He had varied tastes, but it was from my interactions with him that I took more notice of Mariah Carey and bought her "#1" CD album. I also ended up buying Britney Spear's debut album because of our talks. At this time, I also felt nostalgic for Ace of Base and bought their albums, including their new album "Cruel Cruel Summer". 

Then around 2000, I discovered Prozzak. Now, you're gonna say, But Prozzak was on the radio before 2000. You should have known about them already! And my response is: Yes, yes, I did know about them before. But they didn't do anything for me before. Omobalasire, Prozzak's first hit song, never hit home for me. Sucks To Be You and Strange Disease were catchy, but still, nothing to write home about.

Then one day, I found myself at Tower Records (back when Toronto had a Tower Records), and I was checking out some CDs. I thinking about picking up Britney Spear's second album, "Oops!... I Did It Again". I saw that her album was available to sample. I put on the headphones and checked it out. The little bits I heard were decent. Also available to sample was Prozzak's debut album, "Hot Show". I thought, Why not? I put on the headphones and selected the song Europa. It almost was like I went to another world. 
 
Europa was upbeat, but with such sad, melancholic lyrics. It really appealed to me! I checked a few more tunes on the album (I listened to Sleep With Myself in full) and I bought the album that same day. It was quite an awakening for me. I actually made the effort and visited Prozzak's official site (I think it was called Planet Prozzak?) and read various fan discussions and banter. I was super-excited when their second album, "Saturday People", was released.

Even though radio exposed me to a lot of great music, it also exposed me to tunes I had no care for. If you like these, I'm sorry, but I had no care for Boomtang Boys' Squeeze Toy, Christina Aguilera's Genie in a Bottle, and 3Deep's Into You, although the latter song does bring about a sense of nostalgia from time to time. For Genie in a Bottle, I actually liked everything about the song EXCEPT the lyric about having to "rub me the right way". I remember one time recording the song onto cassette when it was playing on the radio, and I paused the recording whenever she sang that line. Hahaha... I did my own bit of censorship way back then. As for Squeeze Toy, I hated it so much that I blocked any memory of listening to the song in full (though I know I did). I also didn't like Jennifer Paige's Crush or Natalie Imbruglia's Torn, though I like Torn now.

I think that's it for 1997-2000 (at least, the major points). Of course, I was exposed to much more. Just check my long playlist below. :)

Next up would be my angsty years, where I discover a Japanese Rock band. Also, a delving into all things anime (and its music, of course!). And musicals! Can't forget about the musicals! ;)

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- My Music Timeline [Part 1 -- ???? - 1996]

So this is a BIG swerve away from the structure I was anticipating back when I thought about blogging about my music tastes. I blame it on my sister -- she mentioned wanting to put together a playlist chronicling the music she's listened to frequently through the years. I thought that was a great idea, and thought doing a blog of it would be a great way to keep a record of it all.

And here's Part 1 of my music timeline. It's a little foreign, so please bear with me.

Overview of ???? - 1996

During my young'un years, I was exposed to a lot of Cantopop (AKA Cantonese pop). That came from my parents listening to Chinese radio stations and my grandfather watching Chinese TV dramas pretty much everyday. I didn't have a radio of my own or a walkman or any kind of music device, so my music exposure was a "take what you can get" experience. Even then, I came to recognize and enjoy certain songs, despite me being completely in the dark about the songs' meanings. Simply put, I enjoyed the melody and emotion of the songs I liked. I'll bet this largely attributed to my being able to listen to and enjoy foreign music today.

Around 1994, I had a really nice homeroom teacher who let us have parties at the end of each month. This is where I got my first exposures to English music -- at least, my first memorable exposures. It's funny to say, but to me back then, English music was considered "foreign music" to me. Every month, the same classmate would supply the music. I'm sure there was a variety of tracks, but I only remembered Ace of Base and Whitney Houston's I Will Always Love You.

And that's ???? - 1996 in a nutshell. In my next chunk of years, I veer more into English songs, and develop my love for boy bands (hahah!). :)

My Playlist

Just to note about the Cantonese songs, I am 110% sure that I've forgotten to mention some artists and songs. I was so young back then, and not well-versed in Cantonese (I'm still not well-versed, but that's besides the point). I never paid attention to the artists or song names. Any song name you see listed here is from me either googling / Youtubing it or me copying and pasting it from a Cantopop CD collection I bought years ago.

This is also kind of the same for the English songs. I just never paid attention to artists or song names when I was young.

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- Me and My Taste in Music -- Intro

Even before starting this blog, I called it "Me and My Taste in Music -- Intro". I already knew that this entry would be way too long if I wrote about everything relating to my taste in music. 

These entries will probably be broken up by genres. I'll probably write briefly about my first exposures / impressions -- maybe mention any "favourite" artists from that genre -- and then link to some Youtube videos. The structure may change when I actually get to it.

Just a note: these entries may not be very interesting to you. Like my Movie-watching blogs, these entries will be more like a record of my taste in music. You may disagree. You may think I have horrible taste in music. As always, feel free to comment. :)

General, Overall Taste in Music

Across all music genres, I tend to lean towards extremely sad songs -- often about heartache. I don't know why. They just grab me more. I like positive songs, too, but I'm much more particular about them.

Regarding slow songs or fast songs, I like both, but songs that are really, really slow usually do nothing for me. Super fast songs are okay. 

If there are lyrics, they gotta catch me in some way -- or the melody has to work with the music. If the lyrics are in English, I want to be able to hear the words. If the lyrics aren't in English and I don't understand them, then the music and melody has to successfully convey the emotions.

I really like instrumentals as well.

My Music Mottos

I have two mottos for music (they also apply to just about everything else). They are: 

1."Reserve judgement until I've experienced it."
2."Do not generalize."

I find it unfair to dislike a song before even listening to it (for whatever reasons). I also find it unfair to dislike a song just because it falls under a genre I generally dislike or am indifferent to. I mean, would you ever say you like a song just because it falls under a genre you like? 

This would also apply to the artist. I'll listen to a new song from an artist I dislike or am indifferent to. I probably won't search for their stuff... but I won't turn away from it either.

My Affinities with Music Genres

If anybody ever asks me, "What kind of music do you listen to?", my answer will be, "I listen to everything." What I really mean when I say that is: "If you want to recommend anything to me, go ahead and recommend it." I may not actively search for music in every genre, but I'm open to the exposure, and I don't want somebody NOT recommending something to me just because I say, "I listen to this and this", and "this" doesn't coincide with what they listen to.

Now that you've read that bit and know that I'm open to anything, I can go into more detail of what I generally like / dislike.

I listen heavily to anime and video game music. It makes the most sense since I play video games now and I was heavily in the anime scene years ago (there's still a backlog of anime series on my "to-watch" list). I also listen heavily to Japanese pop and rock, though I haven't listened to much new stuff these days.

On the "other" side of the world (the "Western" world -- aka where I live), I tend to listen to pop and rock -- often to boy bands (where are they now?!). I often like the music in hip hop and rap -- not always the lyrics. I also have a huge affinity with songs from Musicals.

For instrumentals, I often enjoy Celtic stuff and Baroque stuff. I also really like string pieces and piano solos. They can be long and drawn out or with tons of 8th / 16th notes -- if it works, I'll love it.

I tend to be indifferent to: metal, country, classical, punk, jazz, and whatever else I didn't mention above.

But, as always: if I like it, I'll like it.
