REVIEW/THOUGHTS [Movie] -- The Hunger Games: Catching Fire

Format Watched: In theatres (December 3rd, 2013)

Approx. Runtime: 146 minutes (2 hours, 26 minutes)

Type of Movie: Drama, Action, Game-like

Overall Impression: This was better than the first movie -- a must-see!

This review will contain some spoilers -- or rather, there will be a "Spoilers" section at the end of the review to go into further detail about certain things. There may still be slight spoilers throughout the review, but I've tried my best to keep them at a minimum.

PERSONAL STANDING (Pre-exposures, thoughts, etc.)

I will keep this section brief. I watched The Hunger Games last year. I read the books. I enjoyed the series. Now I'm with it to the bloody end.

JUST A NOTE: If you haven't watched the first Hunger Games movie, you might want to before reading this review.

STORY

I'm going to pull much of this from my Hunger Games trilogy book review, since I think I summed things up nicely there:

Katniss is now living in the Victor's Village (reserved for Hunger Games victors) in District 12 with her family. About a week before the Victory Tour through the Districts (something that Hunger Games victors have to go through), Katniss gets a visit from President Snow (ruler of the Capitol). He brings up that when Katniss brought out the poison berries (nightlock) during last The Hunger Games, some of the Districts interpreted the gesture as a form of rebellion instead of a desperate act from somebody hopelessly in love. He threatens that unless she successfully conveys herself as Peeta's lover during the Victory Tour (to diminish the growing desire to rebel), then her loved ones will die.

Then comes the Quarter Quell, a special Hunger Games that happens every 25 years with a different set of rules.

PACING

Just like in the first movie, the pacing here is good, but you do feel like you've been sitting in the theatre for a good chunk of time. With so much happening, I don't think anybody's mind could think this is a short movie. The beginning of the movie did feel a little slow for me, but I expected that, having read the novel.

CATCHING FIRE MOVIE VS. CATCHING FIRE NOVEL

The movie and the novel are very similar, which is good. But like every movie adaptation, some moments from the novel were lost while some moments were added to the movie. I'll mention some moments / scenes that I was hoping to see and the additions I liked in the "Spoilers" section.

ACTING/CHARACTERS

Again, the acting was very well done. No complaints here.

CHARACTERS

Catching Fire introduced a lot of new characters during the Quarter Quell. Some of them were introduced a little too quickly and were never re-introduced, so I don't remember all of their names. From the ones I remembered, I like Finnick (though I pictured Finnick differently when I read the novel), Beetee, and Mags. Joanna is cool, but a bit too blunt and fiesty.

Other characters I like (still) are Haymitch and Cinna.

PEETA MALLARK

Of course, I can't forget about Peeta -- ahhh, my dream guy. I love his character so much! I love the way he loves Katniss. I love the way he thinks. And loving him so much, I enjoy it whenever I see Katniss reciprocating Peeta's affections.

After watching the movie, I re-read bits of Catching Fire and Mockingjay to re-experience the exchanges between him and Katniss. It makes me feel all warm and giddy. *sigh* I am such a geek...

MUSIC

The music is atmospheric and nice. It fits really well with the movie.

CLOSING THOUGHTS

If you have watched The Hunger Games or have read the books and enjoyed it / them, go watch Catching Fire. It is good!

Mockingjay, the movie to the last book, will be split into two parts (what is up with that these days?). I'll give my prediction on where Mockingjay - Part 1 would end off in the "Spoilers" section. If you haven't read Mockingjay, DON'T read that prediction. It will contain spoilers!

Right now, I am just itching to re-watch Catching Fire -- just to see those moments between Katniss and Peeta (Ahhhh...). :)

"I'll mention some moments / scenes that I was hoping to see
and the additions I liked"

Now, I'm sure that I'm going to miss something, but here were some moments / scenes from the novel that I was looking forward to in the movie. I'll add more when I think of more. Some moments are really, really specific, but whatever.

- Katniss meeting the two wandering characters who were set on finding District 13. Their line of thought and evidence of District 13's existence was neat.

- When Peeta shows Katniss his paintings on the train.

- When Peeta says to Katniss: "My nightmares are usually about losing you. I'm okay once I realize you're here." Goodness, he's so sweet and romantic. If this happened in the movie, I completely missed it.

- Getting confirmation from Beetee that the voices from the Jabberjays could be rigged / altered. With that said, also the moment when Peeta is comforting Katniss about the Jabberjay and that Prim is really not in danger.

- All the sponsor bread that came from the various districts. I wanted to see the designs. Why hasn't anybody marketed and created "District-inspired bread"? I want to eat some!

- When Katniss kisses Peeta after saying that she needs him. That did happen in the movie, but I liked the scene a bit more as it was laid out in the novel.

- The revelation that Haymitch did choose to keep Katniss alive in last The Hunger Games.

- I'm not sure, but I'm so certain that this happened in Catching Fire and not in the other novels: Katniss was either lying on a field of grass or on Peeta's lap. Peeta was playing with Katniss' braid. Then Peeta said something along these lines, "I could stay like this forever." After a while, Katniss said, "Okay." I'll probably have to scour the book to find this scene (I think it's only 5-6 lines of text). Once I do, I'll fix up this dialogue. I don't know why. That's a scene that really stuck with me. It felt so peaceful and nice.

There was only one addition that I noticed I liked, and it's really minor (I will add more if I remember more):

Katniss hugging Peeta as seen by

the viewers in the Capitol and the Districts. So sweet.

- When Peeta comes back to life from getting shocked from the force field, Katniss hugs him so tightly. That wasn't in the novel, and I really liked that moment. I could feel Katniss' relief, fear, worry, sincerity. It was really nice.

I predict Mockingjay - Part 1 will end with Katniss reuniting with Peeta -- and Peeta putting his hands around her neck, about to strangle her. If that's not a cliffhanger that would drive you to buy the book and read the rest, I don't know what is!

REVIEW/THOUGHTS [BOOKS] -- The Hunger Games Trilogy

SPOILER ALERT WARNING!!

THIS REVIEW WILL CONTAIN SPOILERS (didn't mean to yell, but had to emphasize that this warning is different from past blogs). Since I am reviewing the whole trilogy, I cannot help but spoil the books. So unless you have read the whole trilogy, I'd suggest only reading "Personal Standing" and "Overall Impression" and maybe my review on "The Hunger Games" if you've watched the movie (there will be a major, major spoiler for the 3rd book so really, don't).

PERSONAL STANDING (Pre-exposures, thoughts, etc.)

There was only one reason that drove me to read the books: I wanted resolve from the last scene in The Hunger Games movie (mentioned in my review of the movie; search for "There is only one thing I dread..." It's a spoiler, so don't check it out unless you've watched the movie). I was dreading how the second movie would be like because of that last scene -- that the focus would be around something that would not be that appealing to me.

OVERALL IMPRESSION

Overall, The Hunger Games trilogy is a very good read. There's romance, drama, suspense, and action. The writing style is very direct and straightforward. It's written in first-person and we get to see much of Katniss Everdeen's (main character) thoughts and reasoning. The first two books were exciting and touching; the last book not so much (I actually REALLY disliked the third book). It's still worth reading to tie up loose ends, but I personally hope that the Mockingjay movie will be better.

And there's my overall review of the trilogy. It's worth reading. Now stop here if you haven't read the books and don't want to be spoiled. Seriously, if you missed it in my spoilers warning message, I'll say it here: my review of the third book will have MAJOR SPOILERS -- don't go near it if you haven't read it.

THE HUNGER GAMES

STORY

The Hunger Games is a tournament/game where one girl and one boy from each District (there are 12 Districts) between 12-18 years of age are randomly selected. Then, in a range of two weeks, they must kill each other off until there is only one survivor -- and it is televised. This tournament/game is a form of entertainment to the Capitol (the city that rules over the 12 Districts) and a form of punishment to the Districts for trying to rebel 74 years ago. The Hunger Games follows Katniss Everdeen as she volunteers as a participant to protect her little sister Prim (who was originally selected).

PACING

The pacing is good, though I felt it was dragging a bit because I watched the movie. As I'm reading, I can't help but anticipate the next thing. That didn't stop me from reacting genuinely to the major events like Rue's death. I still cried (and I was in the subway while reading that part).

PEETA MALLARK

I just have to mention that I absolutely love Peeta Mallark. He's so sweet, loyal, protective (but not overly protective), and romantic. That guy totally hits "dream guy" status for me, haha.

THE NOVEL VS. THE MOVIE

The movie follows very closely to the novel, but the novel still has more content -- more scenes, more characterization, more... understanding. When I watched The Hunger Games movie, I wasn't sure if I liked Katniss because of that last scene where she was gazing longingly at Gale. All at once, I thought, You just played with Peeta's feelings. Here's what I thought leading up to that scene:

While watching the movie, when Peeta admitted that he liked Katniss during the interview, Katniss' expression, to me, showed that she believed him. Never once through the movie did she convey that she thought Peeta was making it up. So when she kissed him, when she reciprocated his affections, I thought it was genuine. Which of course made me surprised (and slightly pissed) when she gave such a yearning look to Gale. I wouldn't even say that she did it to survive, because the movie didn't present any moments where she and Peeta really needed gifts from sponsors. Katniss was just affectionate to Peeta, knowing that she was leading him on.

The novel conveyed something completely different, leading me to a different opinion:

Katniss thought Peeta had made it up just to play to the audience, in hopes of getting some sponsors. So when Katniss played the part of Peeta's lover, she thought he was just playing a part, too. It makes her character more honest, because she wasn't aware of Peeta's true feelings. Katniss was affectionate to Peeta, thinking they were playing their roles to win sponsors and survive (there was a moment in the novel where they really needed sponsor gifts).

By reading the novel, I could respect Katniss more.

FINAL THOUGHTS

I really enjoyed The Hunger Games. It was a little slow because I watched the movie (but that's how it's like whenever I read the book after having watched the movie). I would recommend that those who have watched the movie to read this book as well. There's just more meat and substance.

CATCHING FIRE

STORY

Catching Fire starts about six months after the last book. Katniss is now living in the Victor's Village (reserved for Hunger Games victors) in District 12 with her family. About a week before the victor's tour through the Districts (something that Hunger Games victors have to go through), Katniss gets a visit from President Snow (ruler of the Capitol -- so somebody with lots of power). He brings up that when Katniss brought out the poison berries (nightlock) during The Hunger Games, some of the Districts interpreted the gesture as a form of rebellion instead of a desperate act from somebody hopelessly in love. He threatens that unless she successfully conveys herself as Peeta's lover during the victor's tour (to diminish the growing desire to rebel), then her loved ones will die.

Then for the Quarter Quell (happens every 25 years -- the next Hunger Games will have a different set of rules), it's announced that the participants will be selected from the previous victors from each District -- meaning that Katniss will definitely be in the next Hunger Games.

PACING

The pacing is very good. For me, I didn't find any dull moments, and thankfully, not too many "love triangle" moments (that was what I was dreading from watching the last scene in The Hunger Games movie). The romantic scenes/gestures between her and Peeta just makes me all giddy, even though Katniss is still trying to figure out where her heart lies.

As I kept reading (close to halfway through), I was reaching the conclusion that this book won't have The Hunger Games at all. And I thought, It's a nice change of pace -- having a book series that doesn't follow the same structure in each book. I thought this book was just going to follow Katniss and her experience as a victor and maybe her experience as a mentor for the Hunger Games. I never imagined that she would be thrown back in, though once I realized what the Quarter Quell really was (I had thought it was just an event that happened every 25 years), I knew what the special rule would be.

I'm not disappointed, because so much happened, but... I think it would have been neat.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This was a very enjoyable read. I'm looking forward to seeing how the movie will be like. Just one more thing: I'd advise you to have the third book handy, because Catching Fire ends in such a cliffhanger...

MOCKINGJAY

STORY

So Katniss is in District 13, a District that has been "dead" to everybody else for many years. District 13 has spent the last 74 years building up resources to overthrow the Capitol. But they need the other Districts to join in as well. To help rally the other Districts and encourage that rebelling is the answer, they want Katniss to play the "Mockingjay" -- the symbol of rebellion. All the while, Peeta is in the hands of the Capitol.

PACING

The pacing here is much slower. Maybe it's because I don't like war stories. Maybe it's because I'm visualizing more scenes that do nothing for me than what I visualized in the previous books. Maybe it's because there's next-to-no romance in this book. I'll bet it's all of the above and then some.

In the end, I thought there was more "telling" and not as much "showing". And events that I thought would happen, didn't.

For example, once I read that Peeta was in the hands of the Capitol, I thought, Rescue him, Katniss! Go and rescue him! If you want him safe and well, do something! But that didn't happen. I was very surprised. How could that not be the first thought in her mind? How could she not at least try to get him back?

CHARACTERS

I have a lesser opinion of Katniss now. Maybe I'm being too harsh because I haven't been through the same things as her. I just think she's very weak. She's very brave when it comes to helping others -- but when it comes to her own issues, all she wants to do is run away and hide. I just can't sympathize with her if that's all she does.

I also don't like Gale as much, but I think I'm just normally harsh on him because I see him as Peeta's rival. Even though he's more like Katniss (meaning they're very compatible), I think he's way too cynical, even on her. I don't think Gale has a high opinion of Katniss when it comes to love -- to express that Katniss will choose "whoever she thinks she can't survive without" means she's incapable of falling in love. I know I would never want to be with a guy who thinks that of me.

As for Peeta, I still absolutely love him. I also like Haymitch, Finnick, and Prim a lot more.

PRIM'S FATE

I absolutely hated this. I think I got angry when I read this. Why? Because it adds nothing to the story, except for one thing: it gave Katniss a reason to no longer consider Gale as a love interest; it gave Gale a reason to no longer pursue Katniss. And that's all I saw from this. Prim's fate became the scapegoat. And I hated that.

It just makes me think, Is Katniss not strong enough -- not resolved enough to be able to say for sure which boy she loves without any external interferences? Prim didn't have to die. She could have lived. Yes, maybe her death also lent to the suspicion that the last attack was orchestrated by District 13, but Prim didn't have to die for that idea to form. Instead, if Prim was there and survived the explosion, Katniss could have reached a more conclusive thought to that suspicion.

I don't see any justifications strong enough that says Prim has to die. Katniss protected Prim for so long... I'm just thinking, Why?! While reading through Catching Fire and Mockingjay, I noticed that each chapter usually ended in a cliffhanger, a twist, or a combination of both. This particular twist was NOT appreciated by me.

While running with this thought, Finnick's death was also not appreciated.

FINAL THOUGHTS

So... by re-reading my rants, I guess I didn't really enjoy Mockingjay at all. It just didn't reach the kind of resolution I was hoping for, though I am glad that Katniss finally admitted that she loved Peeta (the thing that drove me to read in the first place). I think if things were written differently -- say, if Katniss actually voiced that she wanted to rescue Peeta -- if Prim didn't die -- if Finnick didn't die -- if Katniss was stronger and more decisive -- I might have a different opinion. For once, I'm hoping the movie will stray away from the original source and provide a better, more accepting alternative.

REVIEW/THOUGHTS [Movie] -- The Hunger Games

Format Watched: In theatres (Saturday March 24, 2012)

Type of Movie: Drama, Action, Game-like

Overall Impression: Very enjoyable! Worth watching at least once.

SPOILER ALERT WARNING!!

PERSONAL STANDING (Pre-exposures, thoughts, etc.)

All I've heard about The Hunger Games was that it was similar to the Japanese movie, Battle Royale. At that moment, I knew that I had to watch it. I deeply enjoyed watching Battle Royale and was curious just how similar The Hunger Games would be. I did not watch any trailers. I did not read anything about The Hunger Games. This is my way of building excitement and my way of keeping an open mind when I do experience it (the less I know, the less biased I will be).

STORY

In the movie, The Hunger Games is a tournament/game where one girl and one boy from each District (there are 12 Districts) between 12-18 years of age are randomly selected. Then, in a range of two weeks, they must kill each other off until there is only one survivor -- and it is televised. Stuff happens between the selection and the actual game, and during the game, but I won't go into any more detail.

PACING

For a movie that's over two hours long, the pacing is very good. A lot of information is presented which is nice for viewers who haven't read the books. I personally didn't feel any dull moments or the sense that some scenes were dragging. But... it does feel like a movie that's over two hours long. Once the movie is over, you'll know that you've been sitting there for a good chunk of time.

THE HUNGER GAMES VS. BATTLE ROYALE (PART 1)

For those who don't know, I must say this: Battle Royale came before The Hunger Games! It is not the other way around. Okay, now to continue.

So, after watching The Hunger Games, I came to this conclusion: The Hunger Games and Battle Royale are VERY different movies. I personally find the whole game aspect (participants killing each other until there's one survivor) to be the only real similarity. This is from my comparison of the movies (I will have further comment about this once I've read The Hunger Games novels).

***EDIT -- June 9, 2012 -- I have read the novel. Seeing that the novel follows closely with The Hunger Games movie, it is different from Battle Royale. ***

So... I'd advise you: if you decide to watch The Hunger Games, please do not have the mindset/expectations that The Hunger Games will be another Battle Royale. You may not be able to fully enjoy The Hunger Games if you do -- the differences will just stick out. I will go into more details of the similarities and differences in the "Spoilers" section (Battle Royale will also be spoiled so I'd suggest not reading that section if you haven't watched Battle Royale).

ACTING/CHARACTERS

The acting is very good. I'll just agree with everybody else and say that Jennifer Lawrence did a good job of portraying Katniss (main girl character). Though I think everybody was good.

CHARACTERS

There are many likeable characters in The Hunger Games. I think it all depends on who you want to root for -- there will be characters you'll like and characters you'll not like. You don't really get to see much character development except for Katniss and a bit of Peeta (main guy character). Personally, I really like Rue and Peeta (He's so cute!). Cinna and Haymitch were cool, too.

MUSIC

The music is great. It fits with the atmosphere very nicely. There were some tribal-like tracks, some flowy string pieces (for the emotional moments), some high energy beats, some celtic. There were scenes when nothing would be audible except for the music -- to let you soak in those moments. And it worked.

Just to note -- there are two soundtracks to The Hunger Games: 1) The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond, and 2) The Hunger Games: Original Motion Picture Score. The first one features the songs played during the credits and then music inspired by the movie. The second one should be the actual music that's played during the movie. Just so you know in case you buy the wrong one (because I did, haha -- though I don't fully regret it).

CLOSING THOUGHTS

Go watch The Hunger Games. If you can stomach the premise, watch it. For those who don't know, there is going to be a sequel, so don't be surprised that everything is not tied up by the end. There is only one thing I dread, and I will talk about it in the "Spoilers" section.

"There is only one thing I dread..."

I'm dreading how the sequel will be like. I sense that there will be a love triangle: between Katniss, Peeta, and Gale -- or worse, an unrequited love where Peeta is the 3rd wheel. Personally, I don't want that! I want Katniss and Peeta to be together. Haha, I like Peeta's character so far, so I want him to be happy (I'm such a geek). Of course, such events have already been written in the books -- I'll just have to read it to find out (because I can't wait for the movie sequel to find out).

The Hunger Games vs. Battle Royale (Part 2)

So here's a more detailed comparison between The Hunger Games and Battle Royale.

1. The Participants: The participants from The Hunger Games are a boy and a girl from each district (picked randomly). The participants from Battle Royale are students from one class (picked randomly). That difference alone changes the tone between the two movies -- the kind of issues that can be addressed -- the difference in character interactions.

The moral dilemma that both movies share is Can I kill another person?

Then, Battle Royale goes further, addressing Can I kill somebody I've been friends with (for possibly years or all my life)? Can I kill my classmate? A familiar face I've seen everyday since the beginning of the school year? Yes, The Hunger Games consist of a boy and a girl from each district, but that doesn't necessarily mean that boy and girl are familiar or will have any loyalties to each other. The participants in The Hunger Games can be all strangers -- which would make the killings less personal.

That said, The Hunger Games can address the issue of: Can I cross boundaries and show compassion for a complete stranger? The relationship between Katniss and Rue addressed that. When Rue died and Katniss showed so much sorrow and grief... to the point where Katniss showed her condolences and everybody from Rue's district returned the gesture... it was very moving and almost felt unifying. I don't think that can be addressed in Battle Royale at all.

2. Game Elements: There are more game elements in The Hunger Games than in Battle Royale.

In Battle Royale, there are next to no interferences from the higher-ups (Kitano), unless you try to break the rules. In Battle Royale, the "battleground" is divided into different zones. Every now and then, Kitano will announce zones that will become "danger zones" between certain time frames -- if somebody is in one of those zones during those times, their tracking collar (that's around their neck) will activate and explode. The "danger zones" are there to prevent students from squatting somewhere and letting everybody else kill each other.

Also, before the game begins, everybody has a chance to grab a knapsack (which contains a bit of food, water, and a random "weapon").

I should also mention that in Battle Royale, the students only have 3 days to kill each other. Once those 3 days is up, and there is more than one student still alive, then the collars will activate and everybody dies, leaving no winner.

In The Hunger Games, the game, while horrific to the participants and the districts, is seen more as a form of entertainment. There are more external interferences (sponsors sending gifts to certain participants to help them survive) as well as land manipulation to give a "better show" (directing participants to each other). I don't remember if the game in Battle Royale was televised.

Because it's more of a form of entertainment in The Hunger Games, the participants have two weeks of physical training, as well as a chance to "promote" themselves, in the hopes of getting more sponsors and increasing their odds (because some viewers make bets on who would win).

Also, before the game begins, the participants start with nothing. Weapons and backpacks are placed in the center of the battlefield. If they want it, they'll have to run and get it, and risk getting killed in the process (by others doing the same thing). They also have two weeks to kill each other off, and there has to be a winner at the end.

3. Character Development: There is a lot more character development in Battle Royale. Even Kitano has some character development. As a result, there are more characters in Battle Royale that you can relate to, and lament over.

I also think that it is probably easier to show character development in Battle Royale because the participants are all classmates. One character's flashback can involve other classmates at the same time. Even the words "always" or "never" carry deeper meaning because you get a sense of how long "always" or "never" would be (at least since the beginning of the school year).

4. Blood Level: Well, I don't need to really say, but Battle Royale is more brutal in terms of blood and gore.

I'll mention more if I can think of more, but I hope this shows that The Hunger Games and Battle Royale can't really be compared against each other -- at least in determining which is the "better" movie.
