REVIEW/THOUGHTS [VIDEO GAME] -- Hatoful Boyfriend

Playthrough Status: COMPLETED COMPLETELY (seen all the endings; got all the trophies)
Approx. Length: 15-ish hours TOTAL (about 45 mins-1 hour for each character route; about 4-5 hours for the very last route)
Language: English
Played on: PS4 (Digital download)
Also Available for: PSVita, PC, OS X
Type of Game: Dating Sim; Choose-Your-Own-Adventure
Overall Impression: I thought it would be a light dating sim with birds -- something for my mind to unwind and relax with. Boy was I wrong! But -- it was a good wrong, hahaha. I really enjoyed the game.

SPOILER ALERT WARNING!!
This review will contain some spoilers -- or rather, there will be a "Spoilers" section at the end of the review to go into further detail about certain things. There may still be slight spoilers throughout the review, but I've tried my best to keep them at a minimum.

PERSONAL STANDING (Pre-exposures, thoughts, etc.)
So I didn't really know too much about this game. I kept the name in mind when Siliconera made entries about it last year, but that was it. I didn't look for any kind of information, but that's pretty usual for me. Then I bought it on Steam months ago when it was on sale, but never got to play it. Then I bought it on PSN 2 weeks ago when it was on sale, and finally decided to give a try

What can I say... my PS4 is way more powerful than my computer, lol. XP

STORY
Hatoful Boyfriend is about a human girl (the player, i.e. you) attending St. PigeoNation, a school where the students and teachers are all birds. As you go through the school year, you try to woo and get with one of the various available birds

And that's the story at its fluff. That was my impression of the story when I first started playing it. The first ending I got also confirmed that impression. The second ending I got, though, slightly veered away. The third ending I got, well, completely changed things around, and my initial impression of the story kinda just flew out the window. Please keep in mind that there are multiple endings so you may not experience the same kind of "revelation" that I did. I will say which endings I got in which order in the "Spoilers" section (and I will comment on them as well).

However, the main objective is still the same as any kind of dating sim game -- try to get the one you want to like / love you within the time frame you are given. The thing I find really interesting with Hatoful Boyfriend, though, is that even when you succeed and "get" the bird in the end, the result is not always romance-related. The endings aren't always happy either. But -- as a whole -- I think many of the endings build upon either the characters or the overall, real plot of Hatoful Boyfriend.

And I just have to say -- the real plot was... wow. I didn't expect it at all. But I liked it a lot. I liked how so many characters were relevant or played an important part in it. I also liked that all (I think it was all) of the "loose ends" in the character routes were tied up and resolved in the end.

THE COMEDY
I just have to say this: while the real plot is being unraveled, there are fair amounts of humourous moments in-between. There were times where I straight up burst out laughing because of what the character's dialogue made me visualize, or because of what it was poking fun at. I'll mention one moment that I found really funny in the "Spoilers" section.

One thing I found funny. Hahaha, I like it when a game can poke fun at itself.

Another thing I found funny. Debauchery... It sounds about what
I do everyday after work *giggle giggle* Just kidding! ;) (I think...)

GAMEPLAY
The gameplay is pretty typical of most dating sim games -- reading text and selecting choices. Make the right choice, and the affection for the bird you're trying to get will raise. Some choices will also increase your character's stats, to make some specific endings possible to get (as well as another thing that I'm not telling you about! I will mention it in the "Spoilers" section, though ;)). A couple of the choices will also trigger certain events.

Making choices are generally fun for me so I like this kind of gameplay.

An example of making a choice. Deciding which class to attend.

GAMEPLAY LENGTH
Each character route can take about 45 minutes to 1 hour to complete if you start from the beginning each time. Some routes can take less time if you save at strategic parts before making a decision. There's a feature in the game that allows you to fast-forward text so you don't have to read the same thing over and over again. The only downside is that the feature also fast-forwards new, unread text, so be mindful when using it.

The last route (let's call it the BBL route) was verrrry long. While I commented in my November recap blog that the length for Hatoful Boyfriend was too short, I take that back now that I've gone through the BBL route. To illustrate, I woke up around 8:30 AM last Sunday morning (Dec. 6), and started up Hatoful Boyfriend. I only had the BBL route to do. I thought I'd be finished by around 9:30 AM and be able to start my day at a good time. After some 'What the heck?!'s, lots of tears (I'll mention some of this in the "Spoilers" section), and hearfelt smiles, I finished the route by around 1:45 PM.

So... just be prepared to read for a good amount of time if you decide to go through the BBL route in one sitting.

CHARACTERS
Just look at these gorgeous birds! Hahaha. Which bird would you choose? ;)

In Hatoful Boyfriend, there are a ton of birds to choose from. The picture above doesn't even show them all. I really like that each character has their own personality. Even the human character (you) has her own personality. While I usually prefer my character's personality and values coming through based on my choices in dating sim games (so I may possibly feel more immersed), I like the cheerful and can-do attitude the writer already gave to her. She can be so funny at times.

At first glance, I liked Ryouta and Nageki. After experiencing the whole thing and finding out more about each character, I like almost all of them, with Nageki and Sakuya being my top birds, and -- hmmm -- Yuuya, Ryouta, and Kazuaki coming in second...? Lol, let's just say I want to give them all a biiiiiig hug! x3 <3

MUSIC
This -- there were some really, really nice tracks in this game. It's generally standard dating sim-type music -- so instrumental music that can evoke emotion or enhance the current atmosphere. Many of the characters have their own theme song and some of them I really enjoyed. I'll share a few of the tracks I really liked in the "Spoilers" section.

REPLAYABILITY
As mentioned earlier, there are multiple endings so there is a lot of replayability. Also, not all the endings are very straightforward and easy-to-get (at least for me). I had to consult a guide for a few of the specific stat-based endings after getting to the same end every playthrough (yodelling in a mountain somewhere...). Also, the BBL route only becomes available only after seeing certain endings.

And of course... there's also replayability for when you want to see the outcomes of whatever choices you didn't make on your last playthrough. ;)

CLOSING THOUGHTS
Hatoful Boyfriend is quite a neat game. I highly recommend it. To say what I think many past players may have said, "I came to chase some birds, but stayed for the unexpected plot and heartfelt characters". Really -- I never would have thought I'd feel so much from a game about dating birds, hahaha. <3

Thanks for reading! If you have any comments, feel free. :)

So I'll do the scrolly thing and the "Spoilers" section will appear after that. Then I'll add some more scrolly things after the "Spoilers" section in case anybody wants to comment, but not see the spoilers.

SPOILERS

I will say which endings I got in which order. NOTE: stay away if you haven't
seen all the endings!! I will be commenting on them!!! ><

-Ryouta: There was no doubt that I would get him first. I have an extreme soft spot for childhood friend characters (probably because I don't have one, and I think it says something about the strength of the bond if somebody chooses to stay with you for so long). Even though Ryouta's story was really sad, I think it was the most "generic" of dating sim endings. He reciprocates the affection and even suggests marriage, but then mentions his poor health and the short lifespan of birds and brings things into reality. But -- of all the other endings, the girl character gets into an actual romantic relationship in this one.

-Azami (cafe): I DON'T actually count this as my second ending since I consider this a side story. But I did see it so I'm mentioning it here. I thought the story between Azami and Mister Fava Bean was cute.

-Nageki: I count this as my second ending. And I knew that I was going to get him next. I just -- didn't want to leave him alone, he seemed so withdrawn from everybody else. Realizing partway that he might be a ghost really surprised me. As he confessed his love, faded away, and the credits screen popped up, it felt like a punch to my gut. 'So not all endings are happy', I thought. 'Even if I get his love, I still might not be able to be with him in the end...'

-Yuuya: I count this as my third ending -- the ending that made my impression of Hatoful Boyfriend being a light, fluffy dating sim with birds fly out the window. All of a sudden, there was more to the school than meets the eye. All of a sudden, there was a mystery behind the characters. All of a sudden -- the story just got more interesting.

-Sakuya: I really like Sakuya's story. And I think it was fine that the girl character ended up supporting Sakuya with his dream instead of becoming an official love interest. With Sakuya's route, it seemed like his personal struggle was the focus, so I'm glad it stayed there. His reaction to Legumentine's was really cute, though.

-Anghel: His route was so unexpected and weird. His theme is also super spine-tingly-feeling. I loved the final showdown between him, Shuu, and that tree (I go into a bit more detail about it below in the "character's stats" section.

-Azami ("romance"): Azami is really a cool bird. I was a bit sad, though, when after Azami kicked the crap out of Mister Fava Bean, the girl character found Azami in tears trading / selling away her motorcycle.

-Kazuaki: I didn't have much of an opinion of Kazuaki until I went through his route. It was interesting to see that his ending was a respectful rejection, where he then changed his mind to, "if you still feel the same years from now, I will be here." I think if such a promise was made to me by a guy I really like, I'd have no problems meeting that promise. My loyalty and love knows no bounds sometimes, hahaha. ;)

-Okosan: Okosan's endings were just weird! I got his normal ending first, and then I got his true ending and went, 'What the? So that was true all along??' Hahaha.

-Shuu: His endings were... wow. If I was in the girl character's shoes, I'm not sure I would end up the same as her. >.>''

-Tohri: It's a bit embarrassing to say, but I don't remember Tohri's ending very well, in terms of how the girl character fit in. Like... do they become a couple in the end? I don't remember... though if they did, I'd like to think I would remember, hahaha. Tohri was probably my least desired bird, though, so maybe that's why I don't remember much.

I'll mention one moment that I found really funny.
What happens when you see Azami & Mister Fava Bean's ending. Hahaha! xD

This always cracks me up, hahahaha. It's something that I would likely do one day in one of my text-based games. x3

Some choices will also increase your character's stats...

What I'm talking about here is the boss battle in Anghel's route. The character stats are taken into consideration. When I first realized what was happening, I thought, 'Omg! Omg! A boss battle in a text-based game!!!'. It made me think of the text-based game I made with my sister a few years ago, and I just thought, 'This is so awesome!!

After some 'What the heck?!'s, lots of tears...

I know I'm going to miss some tearful moments, but here's what comes to mind so far:

-Nageki's past: Just to find out how he felt about himself, about the humans, about his family... and what he decided to do about his situation... it was really heart-wrenching.

-Yuuya's sacrifice and story: Well... I cried a lot in these scenes. When Yuuya took the hit for Sakuya, I could only imagine how Sakuya was feeling -- all the regret at not reciprocating Yuuya's brotherly affection and viewing Yuuya as somebody below him. Yuuya's story and reveal that Sakuya was actually his brother just made that regretful feeling magnify like a thousand times. That Yuuya would love his brother so much...

-Okosan's blind conviction: This is really silly of me but I shed a few tears just now thinking about this. I was never really a big fan of Okosan. But when he kept telling Sakuya that they have to leave the room to go find Yuuya... and when Sakuya kept saying that Yuuya was gone and that they'd never find him... and when Okosan followed up with "Okosan knows! The earth is a ball, so if we run far enough, we will find him!"... that just did it for me.

That phrase... what it means to me... what it says to me: "Don't give up! Even when things may seem impossible -- even when they are impossible -- keep fighting! Even if you end up looking like a fool, keep running towards what's dear to you!". That foolish notion... I can relate to it sometimes -- because I am also one who chases dreams.

The phrase that does me in everytime.

-Kazuaki's past: Just to think that Kazuaki carried so much guilt for so many years... I'll bet the blacked out photo in Kazuaki's route was Nageki.

-Ryouta's choice: I think this is really sweet, Ryouta choosing to stay with the girl character after the school gets invaded. The strong bond of love and friendship strikes again. <3

I'll share a few of the tracks I really liked.

There are more tracks that I like, but these three really do it for me.

Tsuioku by TAM (Ryouta's theme). I like the hopeless yet hopeful feel I get from this.

Seijaku no Umi by SENTIVE (Nageki's theme). This is actually an
extended version, so feel free to stop it whenever you think
it's looped enough times. The original track is 38 seconds,
which is way too short for me. I don't know why, but this
really speaks to me. I feel this lonesome yearning from it.

DEATH TONE by 煉獄庭園. This is my favourite tune from the whole soundtrack.
It's now my ringtone on my cell (though nobody ever really calls, so I probably
won't hear it from my cell anytime soon). The video is pretty neat
to watch, BUT -- if you haven't yet watched through the BBL route,
I'd recommend clicking "play" and turning away.
There is a spoiler in this video!!

If you read my spoilers, thank for reading them! Now to finish with more scrolly things. Feel free to comment :D

BLOG -- Using My Joy of Doing Nothing Cards

So I sense that things are going to get much busier for me for pretty much the rest of this month. I still have a bunch of New Year's Resolutions to try completing. So... I'm going to use one of my "Joy of doing nothing" cards today, and just relax (or try to anyway). But... just so you didn't check this entry for nothing, here is something cheesy (and a bit embarrassing) from me:

I've mentioned in an earlier blog that back when I was in high school, a friend and I were really into Dragon Ball Z -- so much to the point where we claimed a "boyfriend". My friend and I were both single at the time so it was all fun and jokes.

I wanted to claim Trunks -- he just seemed so mature and responsible! -- but my friend claimed him first and then looked at me playfully and asked something along the lines of "You weren't going to say him, too, were you?" Immediately I said "No", and thought very quickly 'uh oh, who do I choose now?? Goku is too obvious a choice and he's already got Chi-Chi...' and so I said Gohan. At the time, I knew nothing about Gohan as a teen, but when I did, I thought, 'nice, I lucked out!' Smart and weird? Just my type, hahaha. I'd often call him my "hunky monkey", lol.

I also didn't know anything about Videl at the time, but when I did, I didn't mind "playing as her". By "playing as her", I mean I started going to school with my hair in low pigtails (I usually either had my hair in a ponytail or down). I don't think I ever really cosplayed as her... hmm... (maybe I should?)

Anywho, one day I decided to write a poem to Gohan as Videl. I have no idea why. I actually didn't remember I did this until I found the poem weeks ago -- written on some cute stationery paper. When I found it, I thought 'wow. I did some serious role-playing back then... at least enough to write this poem! O_O'

So here it is! Feel free to laugh if you like. I wouldn't say it's my best work, but I do like its simplicity, and -- I don't know -- it feels cute to me, hahaha. You may take to it differently, though. :)

*To Gohan-kun* (written on Thursday December 27, 2001)
I never would have thought
You'd be the one
Who'd change my life
You were just a new student
A dweeby nerdy nobody
Until you stepped into my world

I never would have thought
You'd be the one
Who'd show me beauty
You were nothing special
A weirdo I could have ignored
Until we became friends

I never would have thought
You'd be the one
Who'd save my life
The battles were constant and hard
I could have lost it all
Until you offered me your strength

I never would have thought
You'd be the one
Who'd teach me how to fly
I've only fluttered from dream to dream
I've never soared past my mind
Until now

I never would have thought
You'd be the one
I'd love with all my heart

-From Videl~~

Okay, that's it for this blog. If you read this, thank you for reading! Next week should hopefully be a "fuller" blog. Have a good rest of the weekend and take care :)

BLOG -- Recap of November

November was a mix of good and bad -- and also a mix of busy. *sigh*. I don't think I'll be able to escape from being busy for the rest of the year.

Outings/Events in November:
- My sister and I tried insulating my windows with bubble wrap. Hopefully that will keep some of the cold air out.

- Had an unexpected vacation where I pretty much hibernated.

- Had a nightmare that messed up my emotions pretty bad for a while. *sigh* XP

- Helped my sister at a Japanese bazaar event. I bought some yummy foods and ran into an old friend. It was really nice.

- Attended a friend's wedding reception. I wore a long black dress, which I nicknamed the "witch's dress" -- the fabric is a bit thick-feeling and a bit shiny.

- Attended the staff Holiday party.

- Tried a real-life room escape for the 2nd time.

- Stayed over at my sister's place x4.

- Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-Got my main character's crafter levels allll to 60, yay!
-Attended the FC's Thanksgiving dinner event with my main character that was followed up with the FC leader stripping! Hahaha XD I also created a macro to change my character into a bikini while doing a kissing emote but I'm not going to get into that, hehehe. ;)
-Met a random player while on my main character who straight out said he liked me! That's never happened to me before, hahaha. I warned him not to fall for me (big reason being that he said that before even getting to know me, plus another reason), but that I'd be fine being friends. He told me to watch this movie called Crows Zero and said "let's meet tomorrow at the same time". Well, the next day I logged on at the same time and he wasn't there. What a flakey butt! :P

Exposures:
- (3DS) Badge Arcade -- Yes, my sister and I finally took the plunge and tried this out. I already bought a couple plays with real money, hahaha. I don't mind supporting Nintendo from time to time. But I will definitely set a limit of how many plays I can buy each year.

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Taken 3 -- It was terrible. So terrible. My eyes and mind kinda shut down during the action scenes. But now I've completed the trilogy and I don't have to think about it. Liam Neeson was still great as usual.

- (Movie): Crows Zero -- Well, I watched it. It was a little weird, but overall I really liked it. I liked both Serizawa and Genji, so I couldn't really root for either side. I also really liked Ken-san and his convictions at the end.

- (Movie): The Final Destination (Final Destination 4) -- Just terrible.

- (Movie): Final Destination 5 -- This was much better than the 4th movie. The deaths were still cheesy, but I liked the way the plot went.

- (Movie): Edge of Tomorrow -- I found this more comedic than anything. It was an okay movie. Quite entertaining.

- (Movie): Searching for Bobby Fischer -- I had this on my radar ever since I watched the trailer for it many, many, many years ago. I enjoyed it, especially the final game. I used to play chess back in elementary school so it was very nostalgic. I don't really play anymore, but the game still interests me.

- (Movie): Natural Born Killers -- It's not really my kind of movie. It's a bit too crazy and wild.

- (Movie): Fever Pitch -- I watched this for Colin Firth. I didn't really enjoy it. It might be a bit more enjoyable for Arsenal F.C. fans. It was neat to see Mark Strong in the movie.

- (Movie): A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child -- This was cheesy like the other sequels, though this felt a bit more unnerving than the last movie.

- (Anime): Shakugan no Shana (Season 1) -- Finally I finish watching this. It was okay, but I enjoyed the 2 licensed novels a lot more. I don't think I'll be continuing with the 2nd season for this series.

- (Anime): Summer Wars

- (Anime): New Kimagure Orange Road: Summer's Beginning -- I never watched the anime series, so it was difficult for me to get into it. The animation quality was nice, and the song "Kyosuke Number 1" was really nice, but... I didn't like it overall.

- (Anime): Persona 3 The Movie -#1 Birth of Spring- -- I LOVED this! It had all kinds of fanservice for me. And no, I'm not talking about watermelon-sized chests or topless guys. It's the kind of fanservice that comes from (at least to me) being an SMT fan (all the nods to the Persona 3 video game... <3). I'm a bit glad I watched this by myself so nobody could hear me squeeing all over the place, hahaha. I also really enjoyed Yuki's personality. Now I want to play through Persona 3 again. xD

- (Anime): Moribito - Guardian of the Spirit -- This was a pretty standard anime, but it was done well. Good action, nice moments, awesome main character, beautiful music -- I'd recommend it for one at least one watch-through.

- (Anime): Attack on Titan -- Yes, I finally got around to watching the series. Wow, what an emotional, intense experience. I really liked it, despite its horror and sadness. My favourite characters are hands down Mikasa and Levi.

Playing:
- (PS4): Hatoful Boyfriend -- This is entertaining. Sometimes sweet. Sometimes tender. But wayyy too short, in my opinion. I wanted more characterization. The first bird I went for was Ryouta. Then Nageki. I may try for Yuuya on my third playthrough.

That's it for November. Here are a couple pics I took this month plus a Youtube video I like to watch / listen to every now and then.

One of the food items at the staff Holiday party.
It was really yummy!

Me (with a gray box over my face) at the staff Holiday party.
This is probably the most dressed up I've been so far to anything work-related, lol.
I love wearing ties, hehehe :3

Chris Stuckmann's review on Taken 3.
This pretty much sums up how I feel about the movie, lol.

Thanks for reading! As always, feel free to comment if you have anything to say, and have a good rest of the week! :)

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- My Last Two Days (Nov. 27-28)

So I had a pretty fun time these past two days -- so much that I want to document some memories of them. So... this entry is more for me -- I'm not sure how interesting it would be for you.

FRIDAY NOVEMBER 27, 2015
Nothing spectacular happened at work, so let's just skip that. I'll just say I was so crazy busy at work that day that I couldn't even take a break to eat lunch (*sigh*).

After work that day, though, was the staff Holiday party. Usually I'm very weary when it comes to staff parties. Well, I was still very weary. I've mentioned many times in past entries that I am a shy girl -- social events aren't really my thing, unless it involves something that I find fun, like playing video games or watching anime or karaoking, etc. Anywho, I wasn't really looking forward to the event. The only saving grace in my mind was that my sister was invited to the party. I thought, 'Okay, at least there will be somebody I can stick with the whole night who won't feel uncomfortable or that I'm bothering her.'

The party was held at this place called The Drake Hotel. It's this swanky-looking hotel that also has rooms for clubbing.

Anyway, at the party, I was lucky to sit with a couple co-workers I did chat with from time to time. In addition to sitting with my sister, sitting with them really helped make the whole night more bearable and actually pretty fun.

Now I'll just list a couple moments that I want to always remember (for whatever reason):

-I asked my co-worker if his orange-coloured drink (a Manhattan) was good and he said, "Yeah, you want to try a sip?". So I took his drink and took a sip and immediately scrunched up my face -- it was so bitter. I handed it back to him, and another co-worker put his red-coloured drink in front of me (a Negroni) and said, "Here. Wash out the flavour with this." Cautiously and hesitantly, I took a sip and coughed. My throat felt like it was burning. I considered that my bit of entertainment for my co-workers, hahaha.

-When we first entered the party room we were given five raffle tickets and three drink tickets. Off to the right end were two tables with maybe 10 raffle prizes. To enter, we drop our tickets into whichever prize we want to try winning. If we wanted to, we could drop all five tickets into one prize. This year, I wasn't really feeling anything too strong from any of the prizes (I may talk about this in a future blog), so I spread out my entries, dropping one ticket into multiple prizes. Later that night, my co-worker offered to trade his five raffle tickets for my three drink tickets. I agreed and told him, "I'll drop one in the Ultimate Shaving Kit (a raffle prize). If I win it, it's yours." Well... guess who won the Ultimate Shaving Kit?? ;) I also won something from my batch of tickets: a tiny fridge / cooler thing. It's mainly for storing drinks, but I'll probably end up using it for something else... like keeping my clothes cool during the Summer (hahaha, just kidding... I think).

At the end of the party, I went back to my sister's place and I got exposed to a song that really spoke to me. I find it so sad and positive at the same time, I like it so much. What song is it? I'm keeping it secret for now. ;)

SATURDAY NOVEMBER 28, 2015
This day, my sister, her hubby, our friend, and I tried our hand at another real-life room escape (though it was our friend's first time). We went to the same place as the last time, but we tried The Syndicate mission. If you're curious, here is the blog entry of my first experience, spoiler-free.

We failed the mission, but it was sooooo fun! I'm not sure how helpful I was this time, but I totally enjoyed crawling around the place (because this mission called for some crawling). There was also a MacGyver situation that I missed (since I was in another room), but got to hear about afterwards (I totally wished I saw it -- my friend was laughing a lot when he watched it).

If we do this room again, I am definitely crawling around again. It was so immersive and so fun ;)

And that's it for this blog. Thanks for reading! Have a good rest of the weekend and I'll see you tomorrow when my end-of-month blog goes up :)
