BLOG (PERSONAL) -- Perspectives/Memories in 2024, Top Whatevers, Top Exposures, and New Year's Resolutions

Here is the long blog I do every year -- taking an overall look at the previous year.

One of the prettier sights I saw in 2024 (at Niagara Falls).

First thing is a review of my New Year's Resolutions in 2024 and how I did with them:

(REVIEW) New Year's Resolutions for 2024
Using my Crunchyroll subscription, watch at least 100 episodes' worth of anime / dramas (movies would count as 1 episode per 30 minutes of runtime) -- DONE (Just by finishing the last series on my list below, I watched wayy over 100 episodes' worth. They break down like this [also just to say that I watched the complete series for only some that are mentioned]:)

-Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
-Jujutsu Kaisen
-Jujutsu Kaisen 0 - Movie
-Hunter x Hunter

Spend at least 100 hours watching Netflix (for things I haven't yet watched) -- DONE (I spent about 192 hours. It's much less than the 243 hours I watched last year, but it still comes out to about 16 hours a month. Below is how it breaks down:)

Movies: 72 (less than last year. It still works out to 6 movies a month >->!)
Shows (1 season counts as 1): 3
Anime (1 season counts as 1): 1
Documentaries: 0
K-Dramas: 2
J-Dramas: 0
Extras (any behind the scenes / extra footage): 1

Of all that I watched on Netflix, my boyfriend watched 3 movies, all the shows, and all the anime series with me. We tend to watch more anime and shows together, so I have to be selective when it comes to movies.

For my media collection, I still kept track of what I experienced, but I didn't keep track of the time. By looking at the number of games and books I completed, I think I went through more of my media collection this year. I read almost 1000 pages of books! That's quite a lot for me. I'll make more efforts to record my time spent in 2025, but as always, we'll see how it goes. Below is how I did with my media collection. For the video games, * means that I played it with my boyfriend.

Video games - Completed at least once
-Nobody Saves the World *
-Portal Knights *
-Broken Age
-Civilization VI *
-World Cruise Story
-Curious Expedition
-Curious Expedition 2
-Stardew Valley *

Video games - Tried out for the first time
-Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
-Stranded Deep
-Curses N' Chaos *
-Sifu
-Mafia: The Definitive Edition
-Dungeon Punks *
-Skul: The Hero Slayer
-Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition
-King's Quest
-Cook, Serve, Delicious!
-Tunic
-Subnautica
-Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep: A Wonderland's One-shot Adventure *
-Other games I've started before and am still playing

Books / Manga
-Warren Buffett and the Interpretation of Financial Statements
-86 (novel): Volume 1
-Anansi Boys
-Molly's Game

Below are my resolutions for 2025:

New Year's Resolutions for 2025
- Using my Crunchyroll subscription, watch at least 100 episodes' worth of anime / dramas (movies would count as 1 episode per 30 minutes of runtime)

- Spend at least 100 hours watching Netflix (for things I haven't yet watched)

Just like in 2024, I'm going to stick with only these two resolutions. I anticipate needing to set aside more time towards other things, so I want to be conservative with what I want to accomplish this year.

2024 in Review
2024 felt like being in a limbo for the most part. All the jobs I applied for did not contact me back for an interview, except for two which were referred by my friends. For a time I felt frustrated and discouraged. Was there something wrong with me? Did my resume suck? I was fortunate to be receiving Employment Insurance (EI) during this time, but it felt like my life was temporarily on hold. Now that I found some freelance work, things seem better. There are things I can work towards, like possibly moving out or something else.

As for my boyfriend, we are still together. I never really thought about it much, but these two things have happened since we've been together:

1. I've been going to the gym more often
I know that being healthy is a good thing, which is why I was fine with my boyfriend's value rubbing off on me. I don't think I'd ever go to the gym by myself.

2. I've been eating less snacks
Partway through 2024, my boyfriend and I agreed to eat snacks twice a week instead of when we felt like it (which would likely be everyday). Weight-wise, I don't think snacking less affected me at all, but I'm sure I saved more money. During the Christmas week, I declared that everyday was a snack day because that was my Christmas "gift" to myself. We also had a lot of snacks piling up by then.

We are currently trying to incorporate much of what we learned from reading I Will Teach You to Be Rich into building a "richer" life together, which will likely mean adjustments and possibly some behavioural / habitual changes. I think as long as we don't end up killing each other, things will be fine. :)

Notable/Significant Memories/Events in 2024
Visiting Niagara Falls: This was the closest to a spur-of-the-moment trip for me. It was a long weekend and nothing specific was going on for me nor my boyfriend. My boyfriend said something to the effect of "Let's go on a trip" and I said, "Okay". Then the next day we went to Niagara Falls. After so many years of wanting to dine at IHOP, my wish was finally fulfilled.

Getting a temporary job helping my friend's relative's trophy shop: It was an interesting experience. A shout-out to my former co-workers who taught me how to do a great job while I was there.

My grandmother passing away: With her passing, all of my grandparents have now passed on. May they all rest in peace.

Stopped my last GICs from auto-renewing: It felt like an accomplishment to me.

FFBE Global ending its service: Its announcement got me to log in again. Thank you for the memories! A blog is still coming for it.

Attending the Anime Symphonic concert: It could have been better, but it did expose me to a great piece from JoJo's Bizarre Adventure, so not all was lost.

Attending the Hatsune Miku concert: Sadly this was a disappointment. I pray that future concerts will be different.

Hanging out with friends: I will always appreciate this.

Having the LINE voice chats with friends: Having these chats are always nice. <3

Tuning into the Extra Life stream with Stephen, Mal, and friends: This is always a fun and wacky time. When I feel more financially stable I'll donate again.

"Trauma Center: Second Opinion | Extra Life 2024 #18" from StephenVOD.
This was one of the games played during Extra Life. Some of the scenes touch on a sensitive topic (suicide). The reactions to some of the in-game text are gold.

Wrap-ups, Replays, etc. in 2024
Sometimes I look forward to these 'cuz I'm curious about my stats. Some of these links will likely not be accessible after a certain time so check them out while you can if you like. I don't think the Wrap-Up for PS had a shareable link for 2024.

Spotify (my playlist): Link (can you sift through the songs that are only on the list for blogging purposes? Hahaha)
Steam: Link

Summary of my Steam Replay. I'm not surprised that I only played 6 games on Steam because...

I played way more games on the PS4! 1183 hours would come to about over 3 hours a day.

My Top 5 games for the PS4 Wrap-up. I knew that Genshin would be first, but it was interesting to see the Curious Expedition games and Subnautica in the Top 5 as well.

How many songs I listened to on Spotify. I admit that I didn't listen to Spotify very much this year.

My top song on Spotify, which was the first opening theme for Soul Land. It still amazes me that my boyfriend and I watched the entire... first two seasons? (260+ episodes) That was a lot of time commitment. >_>

My top artists and top songs on Spotify.

My top 5 Twitch streamers. I was a bit more quiet this year, but I was still around.

Some more info from the Twitch Recap. When Stephen and Mal played Moon Remix, I tuned in for as many sessions as I could. XD

Top Whatevers in 2024
This is my top list of what was released in 2024 that I experienced. It's really short this year since I experienced a lot of older things.

I should note that I watched Like a Dragon: Yakuza on Amazon Prime. It was the only series I watched that was released in 2024, but I refuse to list it as a top for 2024. It just didn't satisfy me enough!

(Movie): Deadpool & Wolverine
When I thought I'd never see Hugh Jackman as Wolverine again because of Logan... we get this. And it's a fantastic and entertaining movie.

Top Exposures in 2024
This is my top list of what I was exposed to this year, regardless of what year it really came out in. Any titles with two years indicate the original release date, then the English release date. If I list here the same thing from my "Top Whatevers", I will also mention a runner-up.

(Anime): Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood (2009-2010)
This is pretty old now, but I think it still holds well to many series that are out today. Great pacing. Great characters. Great story. It's a great series and definitely worth watching.

(Movie): Tie between Spotlight (2015) and Oppenheimer (2023)
Both Spotlight and Oppenheimer were masterpieces in their own way. Spotlight was a down-to-Earth, realistic retelling of a horrific subject matter. Oppenheimer was a retelling of an intriguing time in history that contained some beautiful (or frightening) cinematic moments. Both had wonderful acting and amazing scripts. It's a bit hard to say if they are enjoyable because of the subject matter (especially for Spotlight), but I think these are important movies to watch
.

(Video Game): Curious Expedition [PS4] (2016)
Yes, this beat out Civilization VI for me as well as Curious Expedition 2. While I thought some of the mechanics went more in-depth in Curious Expedition 2, my overall enjoyment was higher with Curious Expedition. The randomness was fun. The gameplay was addictive. All-in-all, Curious Expedition was a delight that didn't wear out its welcome.

(Show): Beyond Evil (2021)
It's a K-drama that started off a bit slow but drew me in strong after the first couple episodes. I loved watching the plot unfold in unexpected ways. The acting was also superb, especially for the main characters. Just talking about it makes me want to watch it again. <3

(Song - English): You're My World from Last Night in Soho
 (2021)
This song is so haunting but so beautiful at the same time.

"You're My World" from Last Night in Soho.
This is so beautifully sung.

(Song - Non-English): Timeless from Beyond Evil (2021)
It's intense with so much mystery and thrills -- just like the series.

"Timeless" from Beyond Evil.
I think it captures the essence of the series so well.

-----------------------------------

And that's that for my review of 2024.

In my last entry, I noted a few things I wanted to do in 2024:

-Find ways to make money (I'm currently doing freelance so I believe that counts)
-Finish up playing the main Yakuza games
(I'm still on 6, so nope)
-Learn more about investing (I may not be able to use all the proper terminology in a conversation, but I did learn about it)

For 2025, below are some things I'd like to do:

-Save more money (I have my own internal goal so we'll see if I hit it or not)
-Finish up playing the main Yakuza games (I want the top 3 of the Top 5 games in the PS4 Wrap-Up for 2025 to be Yakuza and Judgement games)
-Play around with streaming (I'm not gonna show my face but I think with all my video game backlog, this could be a chance to share the experience, despite how boring that may be!)

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! Below is a % breakdown of my Top 10 spending in 2024 compared to 2023 and 2022. This breakdown excludes necessities like my cell phone plan, transportation expenses, etc. Click on the image to enlarge it.

Eating out is still pretty high. >.>! I've also spent a lot on gifts this year (I'm not really sure how to reduce that this year other than declining some outing invites...). My boyfriend and I cook together sometimes, which explains the slight increase in food -- non-chips. When I look through my miscellaneous spending, much of it is coming from miscellaneous necessities like 10 bottles of body wash, 10+ packets of cough candy, 10+ bags of floss, etc. I'm hoping my miscellaneous spending will go down this year since I shouldn't need to buy more body wash or floss for a while.

Thanks again for reading! May 2025 be filled with amazing health, wealth, and wonderful memories! *hug*

Take care, stay safe, and until next time! :)

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- Perspectives/Memories in 2023, Top Whatevers, Top Exposures, and New Year's Resolutions

Here is the long blog I do every year -- taking an overall look at the previous year.

One of the best meals I had while in Japan (the blog will be coming soon!).

First thing is a review of my New Year's Resolutions in 2023 and how I did with them:

(REVIEW) New Year's Resolutions for 2023
Using my Crunchyroll subscription, watch at least 100 episodes' worth of anime / dramas (movies would count as 1 episode per 30 minutes of runtime) -- DONE (I watched just over 100 episodes' worth, and they break down like this [also just to say that I watched the complete series for only some that are mentioned]:)

-Demon Slayer
-Mobile Suit GUNDAM - Iron Blood Orphans
-Birdie Wing -Golf Girls' Story-
-Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood

Using my Shonen Jump subscription, read at least 12 volumes' worth of manga (for series that aren't split into volumes, 10 chapters is a volume) -- DROPPED (When I got notification about Shonen Jump's subscription cost rising and I foresaw myself having less time in the year, I focused on getting all caught up on One Piece and then cancelling the subscription. As long as I stay caught up to the latest chapters, I'll be able to read One Piece for free.)

Spend at least 100 hours watching Netflix (for things I haven't yet watched) -- DONE (I spent about 243 hours. That comes to about 20 hours a month. If I didn't subscribe to Disney+ for a few months, I'm pretty sure this number would be higher. Below is how it breaks down:)

Movies: 84 (same as last year, that works out to about 7 movies a month >->!)
Shows (1 season counts as 1): 4
Anime (1 season counts as 1): 4
Documentaries: 1
K-Dramas: 0
J-Dramas: 0
Extras (any behind the scenes / extra footage): 0

Learn something -- HALF (I learned some more Python but I feel like I could have done more.)

Create something -- NOPE (I didn't do this at all.)

I actually have another resolution, but I'm going to keep it to myself at this time. If I accomplish it, I'll share what it is in my year-end blog for 2023. -- NOPE (I didn't accomplish it so it will be kept secret!)

I still tried to keep track of how I spent my time on my media collection, but after a while I stopped. With me switching between media that counted and media/activities that didn't, it was difficult for me to remember to record each instance. I'll try to be better about it this year, but we'll see how it goes. Below is how I did with my media collection, though no hours are mentioned for each section.

Video games - Completed at least once
-Wattam
-Slay the Spire
-Overcooked!
-Streets of Rogue
-One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4

Video games - Tried out for the first time
-Like a Dragon: Ishin!
-Baldur's Gate I: Enhanced Edition
-DungeonTop
-Bloons TD 6
-Lethal Company
-Other games I've started before and am still playing

Books / Manga
-A.D. After Death

In mid-September, I took advantage of a promotion and subscribed to Disney+ for three months for $1.99/month. Knowing that I'll likely NOT re-subscribe to Disney+ unless there was another promotion like this, I watched as much as I could during those three months. In total, I watched about 259 hours -- slightly more than my total watch time for Netflix! Here's how it breaks down.

Movies: 62 (that works out to about 21 movies a month >->!)
Shows (1 season counts as 1): 20
Anime (1 season counts as 1): 2
Documentaries: 1
K-Dramas: 0
J-Dramas: 0
Extras (any behind the scenes / extra footage): 0

Maybe if I spent less time watching Netflix or Disney+ I might have been able to finish my resolutions. Then again, in my current state, I'm not really sure (more on this in my "2023 in Review" section)
.

Below are my resolutions for 2024:

New Year's Resolutions for 2024
- Using my Crunchyroll subscription, watch at least 100 episodes' worth of anime / dramas (movies would count as 1 episode per 30 minutes of runtime)

- Spend at least 100 hours watching Netflix (for things I haven't yet watched)

For this year, I'm going to stick with only these two resolutions because I have other priorities to focus on (more on this in my "2023 in Review" section). If I can get those priorities in order, I may re-visit my resolutions for 2024.

2023 in Review
Two big changes happened to me in 2023. If you've read any of my earlier blogs in the past several months, you may have an idea for one of the changes. The other change I didn't mention here at all. The two big changes for me in 2023 were:

1. I got a boyfriend.

2. I lost my job.

Coincidentally, both those changes happened to me on the same day. o_O!

When I lost my job, it was a shock. I had been working there for over 11 years. It filled me with a lot of distress, especially the doubts of whether I learned enough skills there to find another job. As of this writing I'm still unemployed. I applied to multiple places through the year but only got one interview that didn't pan out. While job searching, I also spent some time learning about investing -- make whatever money I have left work for me. I guess I'm lucky that I still live with my parents and that I didn't spend tooooo much through the years. I still have a lot to learn about investing but I have some confidence that my financial situation should be fine for a long while, so long as I stay where I am.

One nice thing that came from this was being able to finally take my trip to Japan. For anybody thinking I shouldn't be spending so much money: the money was already saved up for this trip since 2020. I had wanted to go to Japan when the pandemic died down but couldn't take enough vacation days to go -- the workload was often heavy and unexpected. Now that I didn't need to get vacation days approved and there was no worry of approved vacation getting cancelled due to workload, I was free to go whenever and for longer than originally desired.

Being single for over 11 years, having a boyfriend was a big change for me. Now some of my goals are shared and certain decisions get discussed before I do them. I can't say that it's been a breeze all the time but we've been able to get through whatever hardships so far. May we continue to get through them! :)

Notable/Significant Memories/Events in 2023
Going to Japan: After five years, I finally get to wander about in Japan again. It will always be like a second home to me. :)

Here's the prelude to my Japan blog: https://ironixgirl.blogspot.com/2023/08/blog-my-trip-to-japan-v4-prelude-plane.html

Losing my job: I will always remember this day. When I was laid off, I still had 14 unused vacation days from 2022 and none of my vacation days for 2023 were used. All the vacation days were paid out, but it does make one wonder why a lay off happened when there is still a lot of work.

Getting a boyfriend: I got one. I know I tend to be very expressive with most things but I'm kinda shy to express this. So just imagine I said "I got one" in the most happiest and excited voice. :)

Cleaning my room: It kinda amazes me how much my room transformed this year. The boxes of figures stacked up on one corner of the room are now in the closet. All the clear-coloured shelves are also in the closet. I bought three more shelves. Overall, my room looks more fun and inviting.

Attending Man With a Mission's concert: It was great seeing them again. :)

Witnessing the end of SINoALICE Global: It was the first time I played a gacha from beginning to end. I hope my former guildmates are doing well these days.

Attending Radwimp's concert: It was nice seeing them live.

Hanging out with friends: I will always appreciate this.

Having the monthly LINE voice chats with friends: Having these chats are always nice. <3

Tuning into the Extra Life stream with Stephen, Mal, and friends: This is always a fun and wacky time. When I get a job I'll donate again.

"Wheel of Fortune | Extra Life 2023 #14" from StephenPlays.
This was one of the games played during Extra Life. I thought this was super hilarious in a very unfortunate way. XD

Wrap-ups, Replays, etc. in 2023
Sometimes I look forward to these 'cuz I'm curious about my stats. Some of these links will likely not be accessible after a certain time so check them out while you can if you like. I don't think the Wrap-Up for PS had a shareable link for 2023.

Spotify (My playlist): Link
Steam: Link

My total number of hours played for my PS Wrap-up. Mind you, the PS4 wasn't the only platform I used for gaming in 2023.

Here's how many of those hours broke down. I'm sure some of those hours in Genshin were from me leaving it idle while I was doing other things.

Summary of my Steam Replay. Absent from here were all the hours I spent playing Baldur's Gate 3 with my boyfriend on his Steam account.

My top 5 Twitch streamers. Most of the chats I sent on StephenGeorg's streams were "Good morning!" and "Thank you! Take care!".

Summary of the Twitch Recap.

The Top 5 artists I listened to on Spotify. Sega Sound Team is #1 because of me listening to music from the Yakuza games over and over.

Top Whatevers in 2023
This is my top list of what was released in 2023 that I experienced.

(Movie): Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse
It's a great movie. Great character development; great animation style; great action scenes; interesting plot. It also resolved something I was wondering about from the first movie.

(Anime): Pluto
I loved that this anime made me think so much about robots and their rights. It also made me think about what it means to be "perfect" and what it means to be alive.

(Video Game): Baldur's Gate 3
Do I need to say anything here? It's a massive game with lots of freedom and consequences. Definitely worth playing.

(Show): Loki
I've never really been a Loki fan, but this series succeeded in showing more depth to his character.

(Song - Japanese): Kizuna no Kiseki from Demon Slayer
It's catchy.

"Kizuna no Kiseki" from Demon Slayer.
I can't help but smile when I hear it.

Top Exposures in 2023
This is my top list of what I was exposed to this year, regardless of what year it really came out in. Any titles with two years indicate the original release date, then the English release date. If I list here the same thing from my "Top Whatevers", I will also mention a runner-up.

(Anime): Summer Time Rendering (2022)
It got really crazy in the end, but the overall mystery and edginess was really intriguing.

(Movie): Tie between The Mitchells vs. the Machines (2021) and GDT's Pinocchio (2022)
It was really hard to pick a top this year. I watched sooooo many movies in 2023 -- some of them were super good! I chose The Mitchells vs. the Machines and GDT's Pinocchio because they were both masterful in telling their story and conveying and evoking emotions. Both of them also had very unique animation styles.

If I had to name a top exposure for a live-action movie, it'd be Molly's Game (2015) for the superb acting and clever script. Just thinking it was based off real events is wild.

(Video Game): Streets of Rogue [PS4] (2019)
This was really fun and addictive. I liked that there was a lot of freedom in how to play the game.

(Show): Code Black (2015-2018)
I like the show's intenseness and that the drama wasn't always over-the-top. It's too bad the series ended, but the last episode was a good send-off.

(Song - English): Satisfied from Hamilton
 (2015)
The song is catchy and I think the lyrics are great. I really feel for the character singing it.

"Satisfied" from Hamilton.
If you haven't watched Hamilton, it might be best not to listen to this.

(Song - Non-English): Naatu Naatu from RRR (2022)
It was worth watching RRR just to get exposed to this song. :)

"Naatu Naatu" from RRR.
Listening to this makes me want to dance! :)

(Board game): Clank! Catacombs (2022)
This is one of the first times I ever played a board game where the player places a random tile as they explore, slowly creating the board layout. It's fun and offers a lot of replay value. If you've never played it, I highly recommend! :)

-----------------------------------

And that's that for my review of 2023.

In my last entry, I noted a few things I wanted to do in 2023:

-Start playing the Nier video game series (This didn't happen)
-Finish up playing the main Yakuza games
(I'm still on 6)
-Play Mother 3 (This didn't happen)
-Blog more (Seeing as I've blogged less entries, I'd say I failed this)
-"Live" more (Yes, I think this happened to me)

For 2024, below are some things I'd like to do:

-Find ways to make money (I guess normally that'd be finding a job but I want to stay open to all opportunities [that are legal])
-Finish up playing the main Yakuza games (I'll be satisfied if I can at least finish two of them)
-Learn more about investing (I've learned enough to invest in things that seem safe but I want to learn how to analyze how a company is doing)

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! Below is a % breakdown of my Top 10 spending in 2023 compared to 2022 and 2021. This breakdown excludes necessities like my cell phone plan, transportation expenses, etc. Click on the image to enlarge it.

My spending on phone games has gone down a lot. My spending on eating out has shot through the roof, though. I guess that's the cost of having a boyfriend, hahaha (I'm kidding). When I look through my miscellaneous spending, a lot of it is coming from my new phone.

Thanks again for reading! May 2024 bring you all good health, wealth, and a lot of warmth and cheer! *hug*

Take care, stay safe, and until next time! :)

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- Perspectives/Memories in 2022, Top Whatevers, Top Exposures, and New Year's Resolutions

Well, here is the long blog I do every year -- taking an overall look at the previous year.

The best dessert I've had this year.

First thing is a review of my New Year's Resolutions in 2022 and how I did with them:

(REVIEW) New Year's Resolutions for 2022
Using my Crunchyroll subscription, watch at least 100 episodes' worth of anime / dramas (movies would count as 1 episode per 30 minutes of runtime) -- DONE (I watched about 238 episodes' worth, and they break down like this [also just to say that I watched the complete series for only some that are mentioned]:)

-Food Wars!
-Non Non Biyori
-Log Horizon
-GTO - The Animation
-Tokyo Revengers
-86
-Chihayafuru
-Gurren Lagann

Using my Shounen Jump subscription, read at least 12 volumes' worth of manga (for series that aren't split into volumes, 10 chapters is a volume) -- DONE (I read 24 volumes' worth and they break down like this:)

-Assassination Classroom
-School Judgement: Gakkyu Hotel

I knew that I'd be able to finish my resolutions in 2022 since I gave myself only two. Despite that, I still kept track of the time I spent going through my media collection. I was curious what I would naturally do if I didn't have many resolutions to guide me. It turned out I mainly played video games. ^-^; In total, I spent 575.25 hours going through my collection and it breaks down below.

Video games - Completed at least once (about 522.5 hours total spent)
-Yakuza 5 Remastered
-King's Bounty: The Legend
-Cat's Quest
-Cat's Quest II
-Katamari Damacy Reroll
-March to a Million
-The Ramen Sensei
-PictoQuest
-Trine 2
-LEGO Marvel Super Heroes
-Vampire Survivors

Video games - Tried out for the first time (about 43.75 hours total spent)
-Idol Manager
-Yakuza 6: Song of Life
-Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered
-Moon: Remix RPG Adventure
-Ord
-Trine 3
-Wattam
-Other games I've started before and am still playing

Books / Manga (1346 total pages read - about 9 hours spent)... >_>''
-Ravina the Witch?
-Rumple Buttercup
-Rust and Water
-Carciphona (Volume 1-3)
-86 (Volume 1-3)

When I started sharing a Netflix subscription in February, I kept track of that as well (mainly to make sure I was watching my money's worth [I share the subscription so I figure I should share the cost as well]). In total, I spent about 497 hours watching Netflix. That comes to about 45 hours per month (o.o!). I definitely watched more than my money's worth. Here's how it breaks down.

Movies: 86 (that works out to about 7 movies a month >->!)
Shows (1 season counts as 1): 28
Anime (1 season counts as 1): 14
Documentaries: 2

Having barely any resolutions this year was nice. I got to stress less but I still ran into the same problems I had in previous years: there wasn't enough time to do everything that I wanted! :(

I wanted to learn more things... I wanted to create more... I wanted to blog more... I wanted to play more Yakuza games... Either I have to place less expectations for myself (because maybe I'm not being realistic) or I have to learn to re-direct more of my time to those things.

Below are my resolutions for 2023:

New Year's Resolutions for 2023
- Using my Crunchyroll subscription, watch at least 100 episodes' worth of anime / dramas (movies would count as 1 episode per 30 minutes of runtime)

- Using my Shounen Jump subscription, read at least 12 volumes' worth of manga (for series that aren't split into volumes, 10 chapters is a volume)

- Spend at least 100 hours watching Netflix (for things I haven't yet watched)

- Learn something

- Create something

For this year, I still want to stay more "free" with my Time. I realize now that when I created so many resolutions in the past, I pre-planned almost all my Time for the year. It left very little room to deviate (even if I wanted to) and left me with feelings of disappointment when I couldn't finish them all. I think I'm done with all that. Of course, that won't stop me from forming other short goals through the year.

All the subscription-related resolutions are just to ensure I'm experiencing my money's worth. Why should I stay "subscribed" to something if I'm not going to use it? For anybody who stays subscribed to a service so that somebody else can use it, that's fine -- so long as it's being used.

The "learn something" and "create something" resolutions are things I missed doing last year. I'm leaving them super vague so I have free rein to accomplish them however I wish. There are so many things I want to learn (Python, Japanese, other programming languages, cooking, etc)... and there are so many different things I'd like to create (writing, games, etc).

I actually have another resolution, but I'm going to keep it to myself at this time. If I accomplish it, I'll share what it is in my year-end blog for 2023. :)

2022 in Review
2022 was the year where I decided, 'Okay -- it's time to go outside a bit more.' I was hoping to stay indoors as much as possible until COVID went away. But -- that's just not going to happen. Sadly, COVID is here to stay in some form or another. I either Live or let Life pass me by. That doesn't mean I went out all the time. It means I was more open to meeting up with friends and occasionally going out by myself if there was something I wanted to do. I still stayed cautious, wearing a face mask and keeping some distance if I could. It was really nice seeing some friends I haven't seen in a really long time.

Aside from going out a bit more, my life didn't really change much in 2022. I still kept myself busy, playing video games, watching YouTube videos, watching Twitch streams, and also watching things on Netflix since I started sharing a subscription. I actually think that I watched too many things on Netflix... >_>''

Some other thing also happened in 2022 but I can't talk about it (it's not my story to tell. Don't ask -- I won't tell you). I was there to give support when I could.

I already mentioned in past blogs that I got COVID and that it was pretty much the worst thing that happened to me in 2022. I hated that I took so much care to prevent getting it but I still got it. I hated that I missed a long-anticipated meet-up with old friends because of it (I took a day off just for it and I told my boss multiple times that I really needed that day off). I hate that I'm still coughing.

Then... with two weeks left in the year... just after recovering from COVID but still coughing... I hung out with a new friend... and something in me shifted a bit. Maybe it was the alcohol affecting my mood (I was not drunk, but I did drink). Maybe it was that I got to experience a couple firsts (which were exciting for me despite them probably being super normal activities to others). I don't know. I just know I was happy and felt inspired. And really comfortable. It left me thinking that maybe there is still more Life out there to experience. :)

For 2023, there are several things I'd like to do or get started on. Right now I'm keeping them a secret! Moving out will likely take a backseat again this year. I just don't think I have enough funds for it now (have you seen the housing costs in Toronto? .__.). I have been playing with other alternatives, but... I don't know...

This year I'd also like to take some time to do more self-reflection. With how I was in 2021... I know I have more growing to do. How do I face my shortcomings and overcome them?

Notable/Significant Memories/Events in 2022
Getting COVID: This was really bad for me. Unfortunately I was hit with the more unpleasant symptoms so I'm not gonna be forgetting this experience anytime soon. And I'm still coughing lightly, which constantly reminds me that I had COVID. I don't know what I could have done better to prevent getting it, so it was just bad luck.

Saying good-bye to a team mate: I'm really bad with good-byes and I often think of my team as a family. I'll always remember playing One Night Werewolf and other games during the Board Game Nights at work, and that day I asked him to get me some burgers for lunch (I gave him the money for it) and he bought the wrong ones and tried to cover it up, hahaha. He's also a One Piece fan so... I'm never gonna forget him. :')

Having my wisdom teeth removed: My first time going to the dentist since the lockdown happened, and now a couple of my teeth are gone.

Having more hang outs with friends: I don't get enough of this.

Tuning into the Extra Life stream with Stephen, Mal, and friends: This was a super fun day. It's just nice watching awesome people play video games for a good cause <3

Going to Miku for my birthday: This was my reward for myself for completing my resolutions last year -- and then one of my friends paid for me! D: Hahaha... It was a really good time.

Having the monthly LINE voice chats with friends: Having these chats are always nice. <3

Wrap-ups, Replays, etc. in 2022
Here's a new section for all those year-end wrap-ups, replays, etc. from various places. I wasn't expecting so many this year o_O Some of these links will likely not be accessible after a certain time so check them out while you can if you like.

Playstation: Link
Spotify (My playlist): Link
Steam: Link

Summary of my PS Wrap-up. It amazes me how many hours I spent in Genshin. >_>!

Summary of my Steam Replay. I'm not surprised with these numbers. I rarely play on Steam.
I wish it would list the actual amount of hours spent on each game.

My top 4 Twitch streamers. I've been subscribed to StephenGeorg for quite a long time now.

Summary of the Twitch Recap. It doesn't say here but I gifted 95 subscriptions this year (a lot more than I thought!).

I guess this is the kind of listener I am on Spotify.

I wish Spotify would tell me how many times I listened to Voices of the Chord on September 8. Considering that I finished watching 86 in September and the Spotify wrapped-up became available start of December, that comes to a monthly listen of about 328 times. XD

I love music -- can't deny that. :)

I do enjoy my pop music as well as video game music and anime music.

Top Whatevers in 2022
This is my top list of what was released in 2022 that I experienced, which sadly wasn't very much.

(Movie): Everything Everywhere All At Once
When I watched this crazy movie for the first time, I knew it was gonna be my top movie for the year. And here it is. There was no other movie that reached out and touched my soul (and senses!) the way Everything Everywhere All At Once did. A technical marvel with lots of heart. <3

Here is my review if you'd like to check it out:

(Anime): 86
I love this series so much. <3 <3 The bleak world and the characters' struggles drew me in and struck a deep chord. "I won't forget..." ~~

A review will be coming in the future. :)

(Video Game): Vampire Survivors
This is a really fun and addictive game. If you haven't tried it out yet, what are you waiting for? :)

(Song): Voices of the Chord by Hiroyuki Sawano
It's gotta be here if I listened to it 985 times on Spotify, hahaha. It's played during a really powerful scene in 86. Just typing it makes me want to re-watch the scene... *goes to re-watch the scene for the 20th+ time*

Usually I would share the track but I'd rather you hear it in the series first. So if you haven't watched 86 yet, please do so! :)

Top Exposures in 2022
This is my top list of what I was exposed to this year, regardless of what year it really came out in. Any titles with two years indicate the original release date, then the English release date. If I list here the same thing from my "Top Whatevers", I will also mention a runner-up.

(Anime): 86
Runner-up would be Non Non Biyori (2013, 2015, 2021). I enjoy the cuteness and its relaxing nature. If Tokyo Revengers ended season 1 on a more definitive note, it would have been a runner-up as well.

(Movie): Everything Everywhere All At Once
Runner-up would be Erin Brockovich (2000). I keep thinking back to this movie from time to time. It's well-acted and the whole story is really amazing (in a good and sad way). I really admire her fighting spirit.

(Video Game): King's Bounty: The Legend [PC] (2008)
This was so fun and addictive for me. If a game can make me lose track of time, it's doing something right, haha... :)

Here is my review if you'd like to check it out:

(Show): Boys Over Flowers (2009)
For a pretty old show, I think this still holds up well as a romantic drama. The music is fantastic, too.

(Song - English): Running Up That Hill (A Deal with God) by Kate Bush
 (1985)
Hearing this in Stranger Things season 4 was super effective in showcasing the song's emotion and intensity. Every now and then I still think back to this song and that scene. It takes my breath away.

"Running Up That Hill" by Kate Bush.
Love the emotion.

(Song - Japanese): KONNAN janai from Yakuza 5 (2012)
I love the song's brightness. Just hearing it makes me want to sing and dance along with it :)

"KONNAN janai" from Yakuza 5.
I can't help but smile when I hear it.

(YouTubers): Josh Strife Hayes (Josh Strife Hayes, Josh Strife Plays) and Callum Upton (Callum Upton) (Session 0)
I have to call these two out for providing lots of entertainment and critical thinking through the year. Aside from wishing they would stream more frequently and consistently (I do forgive them, though!), they are funny and intelligent, chaotic-neutral guys. I often feel smarter after watching their videos and I enjoy the energy I get from their Twitch streams.

Josh's videos about Diablo Immortal has spurred me to re-evaluate my own behaviours with gacha games (I was already aware of some things but not everything his video covered). I hope I get to meet Josh and Callum at a convention one day (and that I have the courage to actually say hi) :)

-----------------------------------

And that's that for my review of 2022.

In my last entry, I noted a few things I wanted to do in 2022:

-Start playing the Nier video game series (This didn't happen)
-Finish up playing the main Yakuza games
(I'm currently on 6 -- still a long way to go)
-Re-hook my PS3 (Yes, I did this! Does anybody want an Xbox 360? Lol... ^^)
-Spend less in SINoALICE (Success!)
-Blog more (Looking at my archive, I blogged 2 more entries than in 2021, so I technically succeeded? It doesn't feel like it, though)

For 2023, below are some things I'd like to do:

-Start playing the Nier video game series (I did beat Drakengard and saw the alternate ending so nothing should be stopping me...)
-Finish up playing the main Yakuza games (I'd like to get this done before Yakuza 8 comes out)
-Play Mother 3 (I've held off for too long. I was kinda hoping it'd get localized eventually)
-Blog more (I really want to do this)
-"Live" more (^_^)

If you've made it this far, thanks for reading! Below is a % breakdown of my spending in 2022 compared to 2021 and 2020. This breakdown excludes necessities like my cell phone plan, transportation expenses, etc. Click on the image to enlarge it.

I'm happy to say that my spending for phone games has gone down a lot! My spending for streaming things (mainly gifting Twitch subscriptions), video games (both digital and physical), gift items, and miscellaneous have gone up, which isn't really a problem for me. I mean -- I gotta treat myself a bit sometimes, right? I think for 2023 I will list only the top 10 spending categories so this chart would look less squished. Also, I'm hoping to bring down my phone game spending even more. That will be my own financial (and discipline) challenge for myself.

Thanks again for reading! May 2023 treat you all with kindness and compassion. *hug*

Take care, stay safe, and until next time! :)
