BLOG -- My Trip to Japan V.4 -- PRELUDE (plane rides + hotels + timeline of each day in Japan + other thoughts)

I finally got to go on my long-awaited trip to Japan. I was supposed to go in 2020 but the pandemic happened. Now with Japan relaxing restrictions to visit and me finding myself with more free time these past months, I thought this was the best chance to go.

Just like with my previous Prelude blogs, this entry will go over any preparations I did before the flight as well my experiences on the plane rides, hotels, and other thoughts. I'll also go over any changes I experienced since some processes did change from the last time I went to Japan.

Even though this was my 4th trip to Japan, I am always excited to go. Japan is such a fascinating and beautiful place for me.

For this trip, I went with my boyfriend. He's never been to Japan so there were places I re-visited to show him for the first time. We also both experienced some areas for the first time. With me being a somewhat hardcore Yakuza fan, I had to -- had to make my "pilgrimage" to the key locations in the series, mainly Kabukicho and Osaka.

Below are links to my previous trips to Japan if you would like to check them out.

PRE-TRIP PREPARATIONS
Before the flight to Japan, there were some things I had to do. I mentioned a couple of these in earlier blogs:

1. Rent a pocket WiFi. As I've said before in earlier blogs, a pocket WiFi is really useful to have if you want reliable internet access.

However -- and I have to mention this -- there is another contender in this space and that is the eSIM. I do not fully understand how it works, but apparently an eSIM allows your phone to switch providers without needing to physically change sim cards. Renting an eSIM provider in Japan tend to be much cheaper than renting a pocket WiFi, but there are some things to consider:

-When you rent an eSIM, you'll be able to choose a plan of how many days you'll be renting for and a set amount of data you'll be able to use during that time. If you use up all your data before all your days are up, then you'll need to "top up" with another plan. If you use a lot of data everyday, you may end up running out of data fast and would need to "top up" multiple times.

-Is your phone compatible for eSIM? Some older models aren't. My previous phone (Galaxy S4) wasn't.

-How many people are travelling and for how long? If maybe four people are travelling and there are no plans to separate during the trip then renting a pocket WiFi might be more cost-effective than having each person rent an eSIM.

For this trip, I rented a pocket WiFi while my boyfriend rented an eSIM. Performance-wise there didn't seem to be much of a difference. A few days before the trip's end, my boyfriend's data ran out so he stayed connected to the pocket WiFi afterwards.

If anybody's curious, this is where I rent my pocket WiFi (hopefully the site will still be functional years from now):

My boyfriend rented his eSIM from Ubigi: https://cellulardata.ubigi.com/

2. Book my hotels. THERE WAS A CHANGE WITH THIS PROCESS! Whenever I booked my hotels directly in the past, I'd pay for the booking when I checked in, in person, in cash. After COVID, though, the three hotels I booked accepted cashless payment only so I had to pay immediately via credit card after making the bookings. This is something to keep in mind if you were budgeting paying for the hotel bookings during the trip instead of before

3. Purchase tickets to Universal Studios Japan. Not too much to say here. Since I was going to be in Osaka, I thought we should check out the Super Nintendo World area at Universal Studios Japan. I had a lot of difficulty buying my tickets directly from the Universal Studios Japan site, so I went through a travel agency listed on their site. If you are purchasing Universal Express Tickets, be aware that the travel agency will choose random times for you.

4. Buy a JR pass. Since we were travelling to Osaka and back to Tokyo, we thought this would be worth getting. When buying a JR pass, you have to order it before your flight. Then when you arrive to Japan, you'd go to a certain place to actually exchange for it. I was under the impression that the JR pass activates as soon as you exchange it but that's not the case.

When booking for the shinkansens (bullet trains), we used the ticket machines which were easy to use. Thankfully you can choose English for the interface and there was a big button just for JR pass holders.

PLANE RIDES
I have to mention: FLIGHT COSTS ARE SO MUCH MORE EXPENSIVE!!! It used to cost about $1700 round-trip for a direct flight to Japan, but now it costs about $2800.
I didn't expect such a price hike!!! o___o

There was also some strange bug when I tried to book my flights on the Air Canada website. For whatever reason, after choosing my flight to Japan, the costs for the return flights doubled... so for example, if the flight to Japan cost $1400, the return flight would cost $2800. I had to choose my flights through Google Flights to "lock in" the actual cost before purchasing.

On the way to Japan, I watched a bunch of movies. I talked about them briefly in my last blog but I watched:
-Barry Lyndon
-Scream VI
-Shazam!
-M3GAN

On the flight back, I only watched Avatar. I spent most of the time sleeping even though we boarded the plane in the afternoon. We were also seated next to the washroom which was very convenient.

THE HOTELS
We stayed at three hotels for this trip.
When deciding which hotels to book, I went with my favourite hotel chain as much as I could. The 3rd hotel's location was to cater to my boyfriend's preference: to be close to a temple.

Sotetsu Fresa Inn Higashi Shinjuku
Sotetsu Fresa Inn Higashi Shinjuku is a rebranding of Hotel Sunroute Higashi Shinjuku. I am just glad that it still exists <3 The check-in process has changed drastically. You no longer need to check-in to a person -- you check-in to a machine (most likely to combat the pandemic at the time). I forgot the actual process but at some point you'd need to have your passport scanned. If you are a Sotetsu Club Member, you'd need your member code scanned.

I want to talk a bit about the Sotetsu club membership. If you plan to stay at a Sotetsu hotel, there is no reason to NOT be a member -- just being a member lets you check-in early (at 2 PM), check-out later (at 12 PM), and you get a 500 yen cash back every night that you stay. It sounds little but it adds up if you stay for many days. And anybody can be a member. If you sign up and you live outside of Japan, when it asks for your Prefecture, scroll allll the way down to "Overseas".

If you plan to stay at a Sotetsu hotel, become a member and then book your hotel while logged in as a member.

The hotel itself was as I remembered for the the most part. Changes included the rooms being cleaned every 4th day to be more eco-friendly, though you can request your room be cleaned earlier. All the amenities were in the lobby so you can grab whatever you want.

Sotetsu Fresa Inn Osaka-Namba
Sotetsu Fresa Inn Osaka-Namba was similar to the Higashi Shinjuku location. One difference was that the lobby was on the 2nd floor. We also had to grab the pajamas for ourselves, which was fine. Overall, I enjoyed my time there.

No.268 APA Hotel Asakusa Kaminarimon
APA Hotel looks very flashy. The rates were also pretty cheap. I was a bit suspicious why the rates were so cheap, but there didn't seem to be any issues while we were there. Plus, we were able to watch some movies / shows on demand for free. Apparently room cleaning was supposed to happen every 4 days, but it looked like the room was cleaned everyday. The only con for it is that there is only one elevator. Checking in was done in person.

I did some research just now (Aug.6) and found that there is some controversy regarding the president plus a safety issue with one location. I may have to take these things into consideration before staying at another APA hotel in the future, despite receiving good service during my stay.

VISIT JAPAN WEB
Visit Japan Web is a site that helps speed up the immigration process when you land in Japan. It's best to be on your phone when using this site because you will be creating an account and taking pics of your passport. When it asks of information of where you'd be staying, it will be the first place you stay if you are staying in multiple places during your trip.

The idea is to have all this information filled out and saved before leaving Japan so that you end up with a QR code that can be scanned when you get to the immigration line. You can also get a QR code if you need it when buying things tax free.

It was a bit of a pain to take a good picture of my passport but filling this out before the trip really did alleviate some of the stress and wait time while in Japan.

TRAVELLING DURING THE SUMMER SEASON
Unless you are one who loves the heat, I would very much recommend you stay away from Japan during the Summer season. It gets hot -- very hot -- and humid -- very humid. Temperatures ranged from 25-37 degrees Celsius (77-95 degrees Fahrenheit).

I thought I'd be able to deal with it but there were a few days when we'd retire to the hotel earlier than anticipated because of the heat. I'd often shower three times in the day because of it.

If you do decide to go during the Summer season, here are some tips:

-Stay hydrated! Make use of those vending machines if you want to drink something cold!
-Put on sunscreen, even when it's cloudy!
-Bring or buy some UV blocking umbrella!
-Take a couple minutes detour to go in a nearby department store or convenience store just to take in the air conditioning.

I still was very happy to be in Japan, but man -- I was melting, haha. My boyfriend had no problems with the heat, though (lucky him).

Here's a photo I took after landing in Japan and some photos of the hotels:

This was in Narita airport. Welcome to Japan!

My beloved hotel. <3

My hotel room in Higashi Shinjuku. It's kinda small for two people but it's manageable.

The amenities you can grab for yourself at Higashi Shinjuku.
Other amenities like the pajamas are already in the room.

So below is an itinerary of my whole trip. This section is more for me to keep track of my days, so it may not be interesting to you. It does give you a peek at all the places and things I experienced, though. I should note that even though Breakfast isn't mentioned for some of the days, I'm pretty sure I had breakfast, considering all the time I had after waking up.

BLOG - Recap of July

I spent most of July in Japan. When I came back, the rest of the month was spent pretty much recovering from jet lag. And watching some movies.

"Outings" / Events in July:
- I went to Japan. Whee! :) The prelude blog should posted this weekend.

Exposures:
- Too many things for me to list. Just wait for my blogs on Japan :)

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Barry Lyndon -- A long movie but slightly amusing.

- (Movie): Scream VI -- It was interesting, but I miss the old characters.

- (Movie): Shazam! -- This was really fun.

- (Movie): M3GAN -- It's as I expected. Just okay.

- (Movie): Avatar -- Maybe it was a technical marvel when it was released, but I thought it was just meh.

- (Movie): Okja -- I was surprised to recognize Paul Dano and Steven Yuen by voice alone. Overall it's nicely shot.

- (Movie): Funny Girl -- Very entertaining and charming.

- (Movie): Escape Room: Tournament of Champions -- It's intense at times, but overall it's just okay. I didn't really like the direction of the story.

- (PC): Overcooked! 2 -- I liked that this was easier than the first Overcooked! game, but some stages were still stressful to play.

BLOG -- Recap of June

June has been pretty uneventful since I've been busy packing and getting prepared. You see... I'm going to visit Japan really soon! :) It's been lonnnnng overdue. I still managed to watch a number of movies, though, haha.

"Outings" / Events in June:
- I had a game day with my sister, her husband, and my boyfriend. It was a fun time. :)

Exposures:
- (Switch): Fight Crab -- I only tried it out for a few matches. The concept is ridiculous but the controls feel strange. The colour palette is not to my taste either.

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Booksmart -- It was funny at times.

- (Movie): Oldboy (2013) -- If you want a good, but crazy movie, watch the 2003 Korean version. This remake is very... not good.

- (Movie): Escape Plan: The Extractors -- Meh. At least I'm done the series.

- (Movie): Jumanji (1995) -- A very wild movie.

- (Movie): Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse -- It's fantastic, 'cept for one certain part.

- (Movie): Jurassic World -- It was okay.

- (Movie): Midsommar -- Pretty creepy and unsettling.

- (Movie): Top Gun (1986) -- I think this is the first time I've watched a movie where I think if you've watched the sequel you don't need to watch the original at all.

Playing:
- (PS4): Streets of Rogue -- This is really random and fun. I already got all trophies for it on the PS4 but I still like playing it every now and then.

BLOG -- Man with a Mission World Tour 2023 ~Wolves on Parade~ @ The Axis Club (May 25, 2023)

So Man With a Mission (MWAM) stopped by Toronto over a week ago, and I went. I initially was too busy but then I made myself un-busy. I had so much fun at their last concert (so many years ago) that I realized I couldn't miss the chance to see them again.

For anybody curious, here's my blog to the last concert:

Me and Man With A Mission - Update
There's not much to update from the last time. I still listen to MWAM every now and then, "akatsuki", "Memories", and "Please Forgive Me" still being my favourite songs (please perform them live in Toronto one day!).

For this concert, I was thinking of getting a VIP ticket (since I got one at the last concert). Then I saw the price and promptly purchased general admission. $300-something for VIP vs  $35-something for general admission is a huge gap... especially if we're all sharing the same stage! Was it to offset ticket scalping? Sorry... I just couldn't do it. The most I would probably pay for VIP would be maybe $200 after tax.

The Little Details
Date of Concert: May 25, 2023
Venue: The Axis Club (Toronto, Ontario)
Time: 8:00 PM (Doors open 6:45 PM for VIP; 7:10 PM for general admission)
Ticket Price Total: $36.75 (general admission)
Seating: No reserved seating

5:15-ish PM @ The Axis Club
The line into The Axis Club.

I got to The Axis Club about 2 hours early with my boyfriend. We were there that early to meet with a couple friends, but they didn't show until much later. By that time more people had lined up behind us.

The weather was pretty windy so it was a bit agonizing being in line for so long. My boyfriend and I ended up chatting with the person behind us. The guy seemed open to small talk so it was a good way to pass time. We talked about how we first got exposed to MWAM (his first exposure was through watching Seven Deadly Sins). We also talked about some anime series we enjoyed (he really liked Air Gear -- I'll have to check it out sometime). I talked about Monster and Black Lagoon (series I'll blog about one day). The guy also mentioned attending Anime North the next day and it being his first convention ever. I wished him luck with all the long lines he'll be facing.

At some point, the line got divided into a VIP line and a general admission line. We also had to make space to let all the beer get wheeled in (we saw tons of tall Heineken cans). Eventually the VIP attendees were given a bag of goodies (much better than what I got as VIP at the last concert). They were let in around 6:45 PM.

Before we got let in, we had to show an ID to get a wristband to let the staff know we're of age to buy alcohol.

The line for general admission.

7:10-ish PM -- Going into the Den...
The stage inside was much larger than the last concert. There was a large standing area in the center, the bar area on one side and a wall bench on the other side. There were also stairs leading to a mezzanine. I quickly went to the merch table while my boyfriend went to buy a couple drinks (one drink was for me). The guy was also at the merch table. We got a couple things and went back to the standing area where my boyfriend met with the couple of friends we were supposed to meet up with earlier.

The guy noticed that some of the VIPs were standing on the mezzanine. I was a bit surprised. The view would be great for sure, but the mezzanine was much farther from the wolves. Wouldn't a VIP want to be as close to the stage as possible?

Close to 8 PM (show time), I went to the washroom. I decided to use one attendee holding a MWAN plushie as a "landmark" to help me find my way back to my boyfriend and friends. Sadly, I didn't see that person at all when I came back to the standing area. I weaved into the crowd and then saw a friend's head some rows in front of me. So I weaved out of the crowd and gently pushed my way back in.

Around 8 PM, some attendees were howling (like wolves), I guess hoping it would encourage the wolves to come out.

A couple times, an announcement came on telling the attendees that it was very bad luck to take photos and videos during the concert. I laughed. I thought it was cute.

The merchandise shop! It was pretty small.

The stage but with a different image.

8:15-ish PM -- Music START!!
It -- was -- fantastic! MWAM really knows how to keep a crowd pumped up. Throughout many of the songs, one of them would make hand motions (like clapping or waving the arms) and we'd follow along. My feet were already starting to ache after the 3rd song (please keep in mind that I was standing since 5:15 PM), but I kept going, cheering and moving my arms.

Aside from hoping my favourite songs would be performed, there were two things I was hoping would happen: that moment of being motioned to sit and jump all at the same time (something that happened at the last concert), and chances for wolf pats. The wolf pats did not happen this year (understandable since COVID is still a thing), but the sitting and jumping did! I got so excited when one of the wolves made hand motions for us to "sit"... XD

Halfway through the concert, the wolves left and we were shown a short video clip of Spear Rib (drummer) in a meeting with an executive. Spear Rib wanted to draw some wild animals so they were on a roadtrip to the safari. Little did they know that Tokyo Tanaka (lead vocalist) was the driver! They ended up at an F1 track (I think it was F1) and Tanaka suggested that Spear Rib try drawing him while he was driving fast. It was pretty hilarious -- and very random XD

At some point, one of the wolves (maybe Jean-Ken Johnny? If I'm wrong, please correct me) said they tried the sushi in Toronto and said we really screwed it up (jokingly, of course). He also encouraged us to visit Japan to try out the sushi there.

The only other time things slowed down a bit was when Jean-Ken Johnny (I think?) performed an acoustic version of "Change the World". It was great.

Any Demon Slayer fans watching season 3 probably went wild when familiar string rhythms to "kizuna no kiseki" began (I'm still a couple seasons behind so I didn't recognize it).

After the last song, they thanked us and walked offstage. My feet and arms were so sore, but I didn't want it to end. The crowd kept clapping and shouting "Encore!". Then it changed to "One more song!". Then it was just clapping. We were all probably so dead tired but we all wanted more.

The wolves came back on and did two more songs. The last song was "FLY AGAIN -Hero's Anthem-", which I thought was very fitting for a last song.

When it was over, some of the wolves wrapped their open mouths with scarves (to hide their faces) and then told us it was okay to take pictures and videos.

The show ended around 10:05 PM.

The wolves. The only time we're allowed to take photos.

Another shot. Don't they look ferocious and adorable?

Setlist
Here is the setlist for MWAM. Unlike the last time, it was much easier to put together. For this tour, MWAM had a Spotify playlist that changed to match the setlist of the current concert. So after the concert, I quickly copied the setlist for Toronto before it changed to the next concert.

Here's the Spotify playlist for Toronto if you want to check it out:

Overall Experience
This was so much fun. I'm really glad I went in the end. If you want to attend a concert that stays high energy the whole way through, this is definitely one! If you enjoy anime and like upbeat vibes, this concert will satiate. I was so tired and so energized at the same time. The next day I didn't want to move, hahaha.

A special thanks to the guy who chatted with me and my boyfriend during the 2-hour long line into the club, for telling me where to find MWAM's setlist for the night, and then sticking with us through the concert. If he happens to be reading this blog (almost 100% unlikely), feel free to drop a comment or send a message through the contact form and say "hi". I'd like to talk some more anime! May we possibly meet again at another MWAM concert! XD

MWAM, thank you for coming to Toronto! Please come again soon! <3 <3 <3

I swear... I'll be able to tell you guys apart at the next concert! XD

My swag. A t-shirt plus their 10 year anniversary "Best Mission" CD.
Total cost was $90.

Thank you so much for reading!

If you have any questions / comments, feel free!

Take care, stay safe, and until next time! :)

BLOG -- Recap of May

Things are still busy. I have to spend some time in June packing.

"Outings" / Events in May:
- I went to a concert for Man With a Mission. I'll be blogging about it this weekend.

- Did an escape room with my sister, her husband, and my boyfriend (yes, I have one now). It was really fun! I solved one puzzle.

- Had a double-date. It was a good time.

- I hung out with my sister and our LINE friends. I haven't seen my LINE friends for a long time so I was really happy to see them! XD <3

- I got a new phone. It's to prepare myself for an upcoming trip (more details about that later this month). I now have a Galaxy S23.

Exposures:
- (Restaurant): Slowhand Sourdough Pizza -- I didn't go to the restaurant but I did try out the pizza. It's pretty good!

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie): Mercury Rising -- Not really memorable.

- (Movie): The Accidental Husband -- I watched this for Colin Firth. It was amusing to see the actor who plays Negan from The Walking Dead here as well. The movie itself was okay.

- (Movie): Inkheart -- I watched this for Brendan Fraser. The movie had some potential.

- (Movie): 21 -- It pales in comparison to other card game movies.

- (Movie): Malignant -- It's pretty decent.

- (Movie): Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio -- I've never watched Disney's Pinocchio (animated nor live-action). I'm so happy that Guillermo Del Toro's version was my first Pinocchio movie. It's fantastic! :)

- (Movie): Godzilla vs Kong -- It's okay.

- (Movie): Unknown -- I watched this for Liam Neeson. He was the only good part.

- (Movie): House of Wax -- Kinda unsettling.

- (Movie): When Marnie Was There -- This was okay.

- (Movie): A Silent Voice: The Movie -- This was hard to watch at times, but done well.

- (Movie): The Lego Movie -- My expectations were subverted. It was a funny, heartful movie.

- (Movie): The Mask of Zorro -- Quite entertaining for an older movie.

- (Movie): Dr. Cabbie -- Some of the humour didn't land for me, but I liked that the movie was shot in Toronto.

Playing:
- Nothing this time.

Reading:
- (Graphic Novel): A.D. After Death by Scott Snyder, Jeff Lemire -- The premise was interesting but I didn't really care for the main character.

That's it for May. Here are a few pics / screenshots I took this month plus a YouTube video.

I went to Pizza Saint Tropez again. This time the pizza has mochi on it. The mochi has an interesting texture but it was mostly tasteless. I prefer the pizza I had last time.

The pizza I had from Slowhand Pizza. The crust was very crunchy.

I finally try out the melon bun from Hattendo. It's different from other melon buns I've tried. I like it.

New limited chip flavours (I don't know if they are still available). I didn't really like either of them. I thought they were too cheesy.

What I did with my LINE friends: Dim sum! Mmmm.

I thought this drink was only available in the US. I tried it because of Stephen Georg's old vlog videos. It tastes like a Jolly Rancher green apple.

Geese!

Congrats to my guild!
