BLOG -- Recap of November

November was surprise. I wasn't really expecting it, but almost every day was busy for me, and not exactly 'cuz of work either (though there was one week where I worked nearly 11 hours for three days' straight...).

I never really realized it, but I've been spending more time with friends now than I did before the pandemic. I am grateful to continue to be in touch and that I am still able to create some precious memories during these times ^^

"Outings" / Events in November:
- Watched a friend stream his first playthrough of Yakuza 0. So far it's been really fun. Looking forward to seeing him get to the end, and also seeing everything else along the way.

- Had an online hangout with a friend for almost the whole day. It was really nice and fun!

- Had a voice-chat with a few friends via LINE. That was fun :)

- Attended an online seminar / talk on "The Power of Music in Anime"
. It was okay. They had a Spotify playlist of songs to enhance the seminar / talk. I think referring to specific tracks during the segments would have been helpful to illustrate what they were talking about. If you want to check it out, it's on YouTube here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ru6BLPt6J6o

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-I haven't logged in at all this month ><''.

Exposures:
- (Radio show): The Darkside Radio Show -- I've been meaning to mention this for a while now. It's a radio show that a friend of mine hosts every Thursday at 9 PM EST, and it focuses on the darker kinds of music. I don't always catch it, but when I do it's pretty neat. Here's the Facebook page if you're curious: https://www.facebook.com/TheDarksideRadioShow/.

That's it for November. Here are a couple pics I took this month plus a YouTube video.

Me playing Among Us (private games) with my sister and five of our friends.
In this pic, three of us were roaming the map together and spotted the
suspected imposter (only four of us were left in the game). We just stared him down
until he killed me in front of the other two and got booted off.

I got this on Day 1. I probably won't get around to playing it until years from now sadly ;_;

This is a very long and eye-opening video if you ever had the impression that
The Lion King ripped off Kimba the White Lion.

BLOG (PERSONAL) -- My Small Words to My Former, Former Boss

Early this week, I was informed that my former, former boss passed away. I was very shocked and saddened. He was still so young...

For this blog, I'm going to reminisce a little. Talk about some of the good times. For me, I only ever experienced good times around him.

So I don't have to keep calling him my former, former boss, let's call him Chris. For a bit of context, the company we worked for was made up of small teams, one team to one VP.

What I remember most about Chris was his ability to have fun and to gather others around him. As a team of 4-5, we'd sometimes have team lunches or dinners. We even went karaoking a couple times. For really special occasions like Christmas, we'd have dinner with a couple other teams. While on his team, I really felt a familial bond with him and my teammates.

One of my most remembered, random moments was during one of the team dinners. Chris was sitting next to me, and he said something nice about me and then lightly placed the back of his fingers on my cheek. Out of reflex (likely 'cuz I was a bit tipsy, too), I bared my teeth and growled. Chris and anybody who saw it laughed. When I realized what I did (I growled at my BOSS), I apologized soon after. ^^;

Chris also loved cooking. Sometimes when the company would have a lunch event, he'd bring in some of his own cooking to share. When the company would have BBQ lunches out on the building's rooftop, he'd be one of the main cooks if possible.

Another thing I remember is him participating in Movember and his attempts to encourage other colleagues to follow suit. Then when Movember was almost done, he'd organize a Movember party with raffle prizes and a live band and everything.

Thank you, Chris, for bringing Life and fun into the work place. It was an absolute pleasure.

That's it for this blog. Thanks for reading.

Please take care, stay safe, and until next time *e-hug*

BLOG -- Recap of October

So October was... eventful and uneventful at the same time. A couple things happened that I can't mention here. Then other things were doing co-op sessions with my sister and friends in Genshin Impact while also playing as much of Magia Record as possible.

Partway through the month I tried working up a schedule to fit everything I wanted to do. It was going okay for a while and then things started going off-schedule... Hopefully November will be better in that way.

I really miss karaoking and watching movies in theaters... ;___;

"Outings" / Events in October:
- Caught part of Stephen Georg's stream for Extra Life. I laughed at what I saw and made a donation. I'll have to watch the rest in pieces over the next few weeks.

- Had a voice-chat with a few friends via LINE. That was fun :)

- Made another friend via SINoALICE. This one is quite the enigma
.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-I haven't logged in at all this month ><''.

Exposures:
- (PC): Among Us -- I tried this out with a friend one night. It was pretty fun! I enjoy doing the tasks. I haven't been the imposter yet.

- (PC): Streets of Kamurocho -- This was a free game on Steam for a limited time to celebrate Sega's 60th year anniversary. It's pretty much a shortened Streets of Rage 2 game with Yakuza designs. I played as Majima (of course), and I got as far as the 3rd round. Then I kept getting pummeled, hahaha.

That's it for October. Here are a couple pics I took this month plus a YouTube video.

Some Korean-style macarons and something called dacquoise.
I liked that they weren't overly sweet, though the cream felt a bit heavy at times.
I'd definitely like to get these again in the future.

On the last day of Magia Record (English version). *sniffle*

This is how the Gallery Mode looks.
I already miss the game... T____T

"Freedom, Pt. 2" by an Unkindness (aka YourMovieSucksDOTorg YouTuber).
I really like the lyrics and instrumentation.

Thanks for reading!

As usual, if you have any questions / comments about anything, feel free.

I'm happy to say that my mental state has been much better this month. I've started tuning into the Active NEETs' livestreams again -- whenever I can wake up early enough. My sleep schedule's been a little erratic these days.

Take care, stay safe, and until next time! :)

Also -- Happy Halloween!! (f'...')f ~~~~~

BLOG -- My Good-Bye to Magia Record (ENGLISH version)

Just a heads up that this blog might not be interesting to you.

My blog this week is gonna be about Magia Record (ENGLISH version), a phone game that is ending its services in a week (only the English version -- the Japanese and Chinese versions are still active as of this blog). As much as I'd like to gush excitedly about it and tell you all to try it out... I can't because it's ending its English services in a week! Instead, I'll blog about why I started playing this and why I consider it one of my favourite phone games that I've played. This will be my way of a send-off.

WHY I STARTED PLAYING MAGIA RECORD ENGLISH
There is a simple reason: I was a big fan of the anime series, Puella Magi Madoka Magica. When I heard that there was a phone game related to Madoka Magica, and I could use my favourite character, I downloaded the game right away.

My favourite character from Madoka Magica. Homura Akemi! <3

WHY MAGIA RECORD ENGLISH IS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE PHONE GAMES
Well, let me list out some of its strong points:

-Beautiful graphics / animations (you can tell all the care and detail that went into it just from one look)
-Beautiful soundtrack (I loved that some of the music tracks from the anime carried over into this game)
-Main story was fully voice-acted (as much as I loved it, this actually caused me to be behind in the main story because it was hard for me to find time to sit down, turn off all other distractions, and just focus)
-Interesting battle mechanics (I won't go into detail, but it felt like solving a puzzle sometimes)

Throwing some beautiful graphics.

Here's another one. I really like the colour scheme and overall design.

One track that I really enjoy: "Remain".

And the biggest reason why I consider this one of my favourite phone games: the stories and the strong emotions in most of them.

Whenever a limited-time event happened, I would always read the story in that event. Even when I felt rushed (due to Life things) and I thought I'd just read it quickly (like I do sometimes for other phone games), I'd still end up taking my time. It kinda surprised me with how much I enjoyed reading the stories. It also surprised me with how much emotion it could evoke sometimes. I really came to care about many of the characters and their struggles.

A couple months before the announcement of Magia Record (ENGLISH version) ending, I took a break from the game (trying to juggle my busy Life). I had full intentions of getting back to it to read the rest of the main story. I thought it'd be okay. I thought 'This game is so well put together, it'll definitely last for a long time'. So much for what I know...

It really saddens me that Magia Record (ENGLISH version) is ending soon. I tried to do what others did and switch to the Japanese version, but I got stopped partway through the process... so for now I will have to say good-bye.

As of this post, I've finished the main story and am currently going through as many side stories and character episodes with the time left. I'm also hoping to read through the events I've missed. There will be a Gallery mode after the service ends but I don't know if the stories will be included (best to assume they won't).

If you've read this, thanks for reading! If you've played Magia Record (ENGLISH version) as well and are saddened by the impending ending service -- *huuug!* (>;___;)>

Take care everybody and until next time.

I'm going to put some scrolly lines and then dump a few more images. They could be a bit spoiler-y, so stop here if you want to avoid.

Whee, characters from Madoka Magica! I always thought that Sayaka's sprite
had no nose which kinda gave her a cute look. Her nose is actually just really tiny.

Lol, what an unintentional burn...

I thought this character episode was hilarious.

I just had to take a screenshot of this dialogue.

This is so cute.

I cried a lot when I read Sana's story and her thoughts. I can really relate to her emotions.

I have to stop aligning myself with characters who look cool, but whom I know nothing about...

Too many times they end up being crazy villains... gah, lol.

For anybody curious, my top 3 favourite event stories are Iroha's Mitama Special Training, Alina is Coming to Town, and Voices from Beyond. When I've read through more of the event stories I'll update this list, if it changes.

Thank you for the memories! I have hope that one day I'll be able to access the Japanese version...

EXPOSURES (PS4) -- Genshin Impact

Since it launched the night of September 27th, I have been playing Genshin Impact for hours each day... going into the late hours of 2-3 AM. I was never sleepy when I played, but I definitely felt it the next morning.

'Cuz of Genshin Impact, I can safely say that I am a certifiable zombie. (f',,,')f

Genshin Impact

Playtime Length (so far): 3-5+ hours each day since launch
Platform Played on: PS4
Also Available on: Mobile, PC, maybe Switch in the future
Language: English (Some text are voiced in Japanese). Other languages are available.
Type of Game: Gacha, Open-world, MMO-like, RPG, item / material gatherer's paradise
Game-specific Details: I'm currently Adventurer Rank 17, doing my daily quests and using up my resin each day while getting sidetracked by the scenery. Also trying to get farther in the story, but... well... it's a bit slow-going, haha.. orz

WHAT I LOVE
What can I say that hasn't already been said? It's a solid game. For a free-to-play game (with gacha elements), there is so much I love about it. Let's go over them:

-The Graphics: One word -- gorgeous. So gorgeous that I had to mention it. On to the next thing, lol.

A shot of my character gliding. I love the way the moonlight shines on those wings.

Beautiful view of the waters. Thanks to Tectone's YouTube video for showing me this spot.

-Open-World Exploration: One aspect that I love about the world exploration in Genshin Impact, is that your character can climb almost anything (given you have enough stamina to get to the top). This allowed me to let my free-roaming-in-video-games spirit go wild. It feels pretty liberating. Small-to-medium-sized walls / obstacles can't stop me now! :D

When there's not much music and you're exploring the world, it makes for some great ASMR.

-Treasure chests / Secrets / Puzzles about: On top of loving the open-world exploration, I also love how Genshin Impact rewards you for exploring. There are treasure chests strewn about in the world, some in obvious places, others in the strangest nooks and crannies. Many NPCs can also give items so it's encouraged to talk to them. That's a big plus for me since I usually try talking to all NPCs anyway.

On top of all that, there are puzzles and not-so-obvious instances / challenges all over the world (I've only seen one challenge so far but I'm sure there would be more). I just really enjoy playing games that have secrets like this.

-Fairly Unique Battle Mechanics: I'll just say upfront that I'm really bad at the battle mechanics, but I can't deny that it's unique. You can fast-switch between up to 4 different characters to fight. Each character represents one of the 7 elements. The general goal is to fast-switch between characters to slap two different elements onto an enemy to cause an elemental combo. Thing is each combo does something slightly different so you can try strategizing what combos to do. With characters having a slightly different fight style and special ability, it's possible to have a lot of variety when fighting, which is really nice.

THE CO-OP (FROM WHAT I EXPERIENCED)
Let me first explain how co-op works.

Co-op gets unlocked when you reach Adventurer Rank 16. You may also need to do some sidequests, but I'm not 100% sure. When I unlocked Co-op I had finished some of the sidequests already. Now, when doing co-op, there is a World Rank to consider. You can't visit another person's world rank if they are higher than yours. BUT, the person with the higher world rank can visit your world. I'm guessing it's like that to make sure those in the lower world rank don't progress too fast, since supposedly better loot is present in higher world ranks.

I've tried co-op a couple times now, and it was very enjoyable. Once you visit somebody's world or somebody visits your world, you can do many things. You can fight any baddies that are out in the world or you can just laze about, too, if you want to. You can also gather resources. You can also do some instance called Domains, but I haven't tried that yet. I had read that you can't co-op in dungeons, but I haven't tried so I can't confirm this.

When doing co-op, I strongly recommend either voice-chatting or having some kind of messaging system in place outside of the game when communicating. Genshin Impact does its own messaging system for co-op, but I find it too much of a hassle to first open the chat window, press a button to indicate I'm going to start inputting a message, then press another button to send the message through (please remember that I'm playing Genshin Impact on the PS4). I guess playing FFXIV really spoiled me in terms of a messaging system (navigate to the chat box, type the message on my keyboard, press the Enter key to send the message through).

I do have a couple qualms with the co-op system, but I'll list them in the next section.

MY NITPICKS
Genshin Impact is a really great game, but I do have some minor beefs with it. I wouldn't say they are game breakers, but I acknowledge them. Without further ado...

-Lack of Game Explanations: This might be prevalent in gacha games in general (it has been for pretty much all the gacha games I've played except for maybe SMT Dx2), but there are times where certain features aren't explained, so you end up having to look for the information yourself.

For example, I didn't know anything about resin (the moon energy on the top right corner when you look at your map) until I watched a YouTube video explaining it (then I get a short explanation about resin when I reached the next Adventurer Rank).

I didn't know anything about co-op being limited to your world rank or less. A friend with a higher world rank had to explain it to me.

Even now, I have no idea how to actually take a selfie when in Camera mode, aside from saving a screenshot with my PS4.

I also have no idea how to access all the in-game explanations that have popped up. Can they be accessed again after seeing it for the first time?

I guess after playing the game long enough, the mechanics and everything would start feeling like second nature. To the uninitiated, though, it could be a stumbly learning curve.

-All the Different Currencies: Just thinking about the different currencies give me a slight headache. Maybe there is a bigger reason behind it, but when the gacha system (called Wish) was unlocked and I had a look at each banner and the shop and all I thought was 'Why? Why are there so many different currencies??' Maybe I'll think differently in the future, but for now I'm just baffled.

If you want to know if I think buying the currency is worth it, I cover it in my next section.

An infographic of the many currencies in Genshin Impact.
It came from this Reddit post here (you can enlarge that graphic for more detail):

-Finicky Friend System: So I couldn't add a couple friends to my friends list, even though I had the right UID. Other friends I could send the request right away. I've come to the theory that for PS4 players, you have to be friends on PSN in order to show up on each other's friend lists. If I am wrong, somebody please correct me!

-Co-op Request Prompt Lasting too Short: I guess this was done to make sure the player requesting the co-op didn't end up just waiting, but I find it can be way too easy to miss a request. I was doing co-op last night and I was text messaging my co-op buddy on my phone and then I looked at the TV to find I had 2 seconds left to accept a request. Being a slow reactor, the request expired. I didn't even know if it was a friend who requested to join my world or not.

Maybe instead of making the request prompt longer, have a notification sound play when somebody requests to join. If there already is one, make it louder.

-Some Dialogue Points That Don't Seem to Go Anywhere: Maybe these dialogue conversations will go somewhere later in the game, but for now, there are some dialogue conversations with some NPCs that don't feel they lead anywhere. Like, one NPC would talk about another NPC, so I find that NPC, talk with them, sit next to them... then I go back to the original NPC and the dialogue doesn't change. Not even an acknowledgement that I did something because of the previous information they gave me.

I know it's really minor, but experiencing that can kinda break the immersion for me sometimes.

-Not Being Able to Pet Cats / Dogs or Pick Up Small Animals in the Game: Make it happen, please! Otherwise I become a mass murderer of small video game animals u___u

The first small animal I saw. I wanted to see if I could pick it up. When I realized I couldn't,
I wondered if anything would happen if I attacked it...
this was my first animal kill... and sadly not the last... u___u

GACHA CURRENCY WORTH IT?
So I did a couple calculations to see if it was worth buying Genesis Crystals, the gacha currency. This only applies to Canada since Genesis Crystals can cost differently in other regions.

Compared to other gacha games, I'd say it's not bad. Buying the most expensive bundle (6480 Genesis Crystals plus 6480 bonus for $133.49 CAD) calculates to about $1.65 per wish, which is much cheaper. The best value, though, is the $6.99 CAD monthly (300 Genesis Crystals instantly while receiving 30 Primogems for 30 days), which calculates to about $0.38 per wish -- assuming that you do login everyday for 30 days and can wait.

Now... are the gacha rates good? Well... there is a pity system in place where if you roll enough times you will be guaranteed a featured character or weapon. Otherwise, it really is up to RNG to determined if you are blessed or not. In other words, I heard that gacha rates were abysmal.

Now... is gacha necessary to enjoy or progress Genshin Impact? No, not at all. You get some characters for free when playing through the story, and so far I find them sufficient. I've done a couple Beginner's Wish 10-rolls that guarantee a character per 10-roll and I'm still mainly using the free characters.

CONCLUSION
All-in-all, I'm enjoying Genshin Impact very muchly. I strongly recommend that anybody curious should try it out. As long as you can resist the gacha (though you will be able to gain some primogems to try the gacha over the course of the game), it is free-to-play. You got nothing to lose, but everything to gain from this... breath of fresh air game :)

Thanks for reading my blog! Feel free to comment on / ask about anything. Though please keep in mind that I may not have the answers if they are questions about Genshin Impact. ^^'

I HAVE TO NOTE THIS: I am aware that my screenshots and videos reveal my UID. I'm just gonna make a blanket statement that unless I know you personally, or unless you tell me your UID (send it through the contact form if you want to stay private -- if you're a PS4 player, though, I'm sorry, I'm not comfortable adding unknown PSNs to my friends list), any friend requests will be rejected, I'm sorry. Whatever time I got to spare for co-op, I'd like to prioritize doing so with my family and friends. Some are a little uncomfortable playing with unknowns so I gotta take that into consideration, too. I hope you understand. *bows*

I actually still have some screenshots and videos to share so I'll add some scrolly things in case you don't want to see them. I wouldn't call them spoilers, but for those wanting to play the game completely blind, it could be.

Fingers crossed that me playing Genshin Impact won't affect my blogging like when I got sucked into playing FFXIV.

Take care, and until next time! :)

MISC SCREENSHOTS / VIDEOS
Here are some screenshots and videos I took from Genshin Impact. I was planning on sprinkling these throughout my blog, but thought they could be a little spoilery if you wanted to experience everything firsthand.

I thought this text was pretty amusing.

My inner thoughts: 'No, I will not return all the books that I took
from the library. They're MINE! >:|'

Poking fun at Paimon.

Poking fun at Paimon again.

Poking fun at Paimon again, but not food related.

An amusing moment. I just happened to talk to this NPC while the game time
transitioned from evening / night to day.

BLOG -- Recap of September

Well, in September I did my best to take things easy. My spirit and health was so drained in past months that I decided -- I'm not going to take it anymore. No more letting myself get burnt out because I felt I had to "get it done" or "get out".

"Outings" / Events in September:
- Had vacation for one week. I had a small list of to-dos and I more or less did them all (yayy).

- Attended a work-related good-bye chat for my oldest co-worker friend's last day. It happened during my vacation, but I made sure to log onto my work account just to see him off. He will be sorely missed! ;___;

- Went outside once to buy lotto tickets. I hope I win the Jackpot! *fingers crossed*
.

- Attended the concert stream for Undertale's 5th anniversary. It was really fun and nostalgic. I cried every now and then, hahaha. It looked like others did, too, based off the live chat.

- I made a small game using RPG Maker MV. If I didn't use some licensed music and graphics I'd share it, hahaha... ^^; Even though it's pretty dinky, I can't help but feel some accomplishment at completing my first game on RPG Maker MV :)

- I tried out ordering a bunch of potato chips online via Walmart. They missed 4 items in my order and substituted 2 items even though I specified no substitutions in my order. Apparently I was able to get a refund on the missing items, but I'll have to double-check at some point to make sure the refund actually went through. If you ever try to order online via Walmart, I strongly recommend doing an inventory count when you get your order.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn achievements / news:
-I've re-subbed and did the anniversary event. It'll be a while before I can play more consistently. I'm totally passing on the Yo-Kai Watch collaboration event that's currently going on. I already grinded so many Fates the last time they did this collaboration... and all for a shiny mount... hah... orz.

Exposures:
- (Mobile game): Arknights -- I tried this out a few days ago, and I'm uh... kinda addicted. I'm really bad at Tower Defense games, but this is pretty fun. Once I unlock more things in the game I'll be farming mats and stuffs until I have time to actually play through the stages myself.

Finished...
Watching:
- (Movie - Anime): Goblin Slayer: Goblin's Crown -- It was okay.

- (Anime): AHO-GIRL -- This was funny and amusing for maybe the first half. Then all I kept waiting for was Yoshiko being punched in the face (I found her so annoying). The Dog and Atsuru were my favourite characters
.

- (Anime): Goblin Slayer -- Very gritty and very bloody. The overall story and writing seemed decent, though. Just be weary of the grit and blood before watching this series yourself.

Playing:
- Nothing this month.

That's it for September. Here are a couple pics I took this month plus a link to a YouTube video.

My potato chip online order from Walmart (what can I say -- I'm a potato chip monster! <3).
My order also included some sweet snacks to
counteract the chips, but they missed that...
I plan to make these chips last for the next few months!
Please don't mind the mess, haha.

A new class I got in SINoALICE.
She is one curious lady! Haha... >_>''

New nightmare I got in SINoALICE.
I find it very fitting for me ('cuz of my name).

For those who missed Undertale's Anniversary Concert or those who want to see it again, the video is still available on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=srZdDAJbHfc
The actual concert starts at around 45 minutes. I highly recommend clicking the
"show chat replay" if you want to emulate watching the concert with others. :3

Thanks for reading!

As usual, if you have any questions / comments about anything, feel free.

For those who are curious, I'm probably about 30 hours away from beating Yakuza 3 Remastered, but I had to take a break to prioritize playing through as much of Magia Record English version. When the Gallery mode gets released in October for Magia Record English version, I'm hoping I'll be able to view past stories... but to view them, I gotta unlock them!

Anywho... Take care, stay safe, and until next time! :)

And... thanks again to you all for reading my blogs. I very much appreciate it! *e-hug* (>'w')>

REVIEW/THOUGHTS [VIDEO GAME] -- Yakuza Kiwami 2

Playthrough Status: Beat the main story plus Majima Saga on Normal, spent some hours in Premium Adventure picking up remaining trophies I was willing to get
Approx. Length: 100+ hours (the game's timer stopped counting at 99:59:59)
Language: English (Cutscenes are voiced in Japanese with English subtitles)
Played on: PS4
Also Available for: PC, Xbox One
Type of Game: Open-world Action Adventure, Mini-games, Skill-building
Overall Impression: Crazy amazing graphics, a complex story... but not enough Majima, hahaha.

A BIG NOTE!!
For those who have read my past reviews, this is a note that I'm gonna try changing up the structure for my review blogs. I want to try shortening my blogs, but still talk about the important things (i.e. the things I wanna talk about, lol). Don't know if I'll actually succeed (I tend to blab a lot when I love something), but we'll see.

Just like with my past reviews, I'll keep a non-spoiler section (the section you're at right now), and a "Spoiler Talk" section at the end to go into more detail on certain things and to let loose with any extra thoughts.

INTRO / BLURB
After beating Yakuza Kiwami and getting one specific trophy, I started up Yakuza Kiwami 2 (will refer to it as Kiwami 2 for the rest of the review). There were things I immediately loved... and things I didn't love so much... Overall, though, I was very satisfied. It just needed more of Majima, hahaha...

I have to say... Since this is a review about Yakuza Kiwami 2, spoilers for Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami could be present! In fact, I would be reviewing with the assumption that you've beaten both Yakuza 0 and Kiwami. If you haven't beaten those Yakuza games yet, I'd highly recommend you do before reading this review!!

WHAT I LOVED

Graphics: When I saw the night shot of Kamurocho for the first time, I held my breath -- I couldn't believe how real and amazing it looked! I'm not one who cares too much about graphics in a game, but even I couldn't help but notice this... this beautiful feat. The realistic setting added a level of immersion I didn't think could ever be achieved in a video game. For brief moments, I felt like I was really walking around in Kamurocho. I think I miss Japan a lot, hahaha.

Sidenote: even though I am 510% a loyal fangirl for Majima, I just gotta say: Daigo looks darn HOT in Kiwami 2. Okay, moving on, lol.

A shot of Kamurocho in Kiwami.
It still looks great, but you can tell you are in a video game world.

A shot of Kamurocho in Kiwami 2. Can you believe you could actually move around
and interact with others in a realistic setting like that?! I couldn't. I was so much in awe.

Story: Aside from some elements that could have been more fleshed out, I really enjoyed the story. Some of the plot twists I could predict, but other ones surprised me.

Substories: Just like in the previous Yakuza games, many of the substories were amusing and enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the voice-acting substory and the last Granny substory.

More exploratory: This was another wow factor for me. Even though things took place in Kamurocho and Sotenbori (yes, Sotenbori is back!), there were more buildings to explore... more rooftops you can get to. For a free-roaming spirit like myself (in video games), I took a lot of joy in going all over the place.

More objects to interact with: I found this really impressive. If your foot hits a soda can on the street, the can moves. When you're in a fight, you can throw a baddie into a store and the glass walls could break (try talking to the store employee after that, hehe). I think it added another fun layer of immersion. Sometimes it could go a bit too far, though. For example, if you stand on a chair or couch long enough the chair or couch would explode into pieces. I suspect this was done just in case you found yourself stuck somewhere.

I also just gotta say that I loved being able to buy drinks from the vending machines.

Pocketing weapons during battle: I thought this was a great added feature. I tend to be a cheapo when it comes to buying weapons so being able to stash weapons that drop during street fights was really appreciated.

Seamless transitions: The transition from the streets to inside a store or restaurant... the transition to a street fight... I really liked how seamless they were. It kinda gave me a sense that all these elements were connected with the rest of the world.

The camera function: I didn't realize this function until close to the end of the game. When you're not in a battle, if you press the "up" direction on your controller, you get into a camera mode where Kiryu could take pictures of the scenery. He could also take selfies and random passerbys could pose in the shot. If I had only known about this earlier. When I saw the beautiful waters of Sotenbori at night, all I kept thinking was, 'Man, I really want to take a picture!'.

A random passerby posing while in Camera mode.

An ironic self-referential line in one of the substories.
I should have paid more attention to it since I'm now going
through the Yakuza game this substory referenced, hahaha.

WHAT I DIDN'T LOVE

Stat-building system: In 0, you could spend money to raise stats / unlock skills. In Kiwami, it was spending experience. In Kiwami 2, it is also using experience, but the experience is split into 5 different categories... and there are 4 different sections those experience points could be used on.

I didn't like this change. The stat-building system didn't have to be this complex. I predicted that I'd end up having an excess of experience points in some categories by the game's end and I did.

Fighting style: Instead of being able to switch between four different fighting styles, you only have one fighting style. I guess I can understand if that was done to go with the context of the game (that Kiryu refined his fighting style that he could combine all four styles into one). I personally enjoyed being able to switch between styles.

Fumbly movements: This might be my own poor controls, but I found Kiryu much more fumbly when moving around. I found it a bit harder to grab somebody and I'd often bump into a door before opening and going through it. If this fumbly-ness really is the game, I'm going to guess this was a sacrifice to make the environment so interact-able.

Searching for my recruits: This is for a specific mini-game. After completing certain substories, you can possibly recruit characters for the mini-game. Only problem is that those recruitable characters are often tucked away in the strangest places... it'd be so much better if they were placed close to the actual mini-game.

Not enough Majima: This is more of my own personal gripe than anything else. I was so spoiled by the Majima Everywhere system in Kiwami that I felt... Majima-deprived in Kiwami 2. Until I finally saw him in the story, I'd say to the TV: Where are you Majima???...

YAKUZA KIWAMI 2 VS YAKUZA 2 ON PS2
I'm going to leave this as a placeholder. I'm sure there are full playthroughs of the PS2 version on YouTube, but well... I had heard that Yakuza Kiwami 2 was very different from the PS2 version, so I wanted to experience it for myself. Whenever I get around to playing Yakuza 2, I'll fill this section out. Without having tried Yakuza 2, though, I'm pretty sure I can say that Kiwami 2 has vastly improved graphics. I've yet to see PS2 graphics trump PS4 graphics, so... (8-bit graphic styles don't count!)

STANDALONE-FRIENDLY?
I wouldn't recommend this at all. Even though there is a recap of events of Kiwami at the beginning of Kiwami 2, I don't think it's enough to build the kind of connection you'd build if you played from the beginning of the series (by beginning I mean Yakuza 0, but it is argued you could start playing from Kiwami instead).

Just... don't, lol. I can't stop you, but I recommend playing 0 or Kiwami before Kiwami 2.

THE DISCLAIMERS (IF ANY)
This is where I list any things that could make you think twice about trying the game out with family or friends (depends on what they are okay with, I guess). They're not exactly bad per se, but more for your own awareness of it (and so you don't blame me for not saying anything!).

I can experience these elements in a video game and get through more or less unscathed, but your mileage may vary, so I figure I should mention them.

-Just like in all the previous Yakuza games, the fights can be pretty violent and bloody. There is an option to turn down the blood, though I haven't tried it out myself.

-There is a heat move (a.k.a. special attack) at a specific convenient store where you can throw a baddie's head into the microwave. I'll admit that thinking of this makes me a little queasy... but there are several conditions to meet before even even triggering it (have the special move unlocked, be inside that specific convenient store, grab an enemy and stand a certain distance from the microwave). I went through my whole playthrough without ever seeing this heat move, so it's super easy to avoid if you don't want to see it.

-There is a mini-game where you do a photoshoot of a real life female model. The mini-game involves trying to form complete sentences that fit the context of the current conversation (I applaud that extra level of immersion). The poses the model does can be pretty provocative at times. There is no nudity, though, and it is COMPLETELY OPTIONAL.

MY RATING
If I had to compare, Kiwami 2 is not as good as 0, but overall is better than Kiwami. The slick graphics and being able to explore more and interact with more in the world added another level of immersion I didn't think was possible. It just needed a bit more Majima, a change to that stat-building system, a bit more detail on some plot points, and it'd be near perfect! :)

Rating: 91 / 100

Definitely check out Kiwami 2 after beating Kiwami!

Thanks for reading! I might not blog next week to balance the time I spent this week blogging.

If you have any questions / comments about anything, leave a comment or send via the Contact Form. :)

So I'll do the scrolly thing and the "Spoiler Talk" section will appear after that. Then I'll add some more scrolly things after the "Spoiler Talk" section in case anybody wants to comment, but not see the spoilers.

SPOILER TALK

So this will be a little different from the "Spoilers" section in my other review blogs. I kinda want this section to be a place where I can unload any extra thoughts I had about Kiwami 2, even if I didn't mention it at all in the non-spoiler section. I may have already talked about some of these in the non-spoiler section but I'll go into more detail here.

THE STORY
Maybe if I had reviewed this earlier, I'd be able to point out all the plot issues with Kiwami 2 (like how did a bomb get placed in West Park without anybody noticing?). Though... to be honest... I didn't take much issues with those details. I enjoyed the story for what it was as I went, except for one thing: the make out scene between Kiryu and Sayama at the end.

Now, don't get me wrong: I don't mind Kiryu and Sayama being paired up. I was actually worried things would go similar to Kiwami and Sayama would die because she was Kiryu's current love interest. I had this fear that Kiryu would end up going through each Yakuza game seeing his love interest die... I just thought, given the current situation of a ticking bomb... to start making out... and to cue some poppy Korean (?) song... I just thought it was awkward timing.

I mean, I get it. You're gonna die soon, so might as well express your emotions before it's too late. It just came across as really cheesy for me. Ultimately, I forgive that scene, but it was probably the only part in the story where I didn't feel immersed.

About plot points that I predicted:

-When Ryuji mentioned that Goda wasn't his real father, I had this inkling that Ryuji was one of the Jingweon survivors.

-I don't remember if there were any hints to this, but I had this hunch that Terada was still alive.

-When Sayama cracked that disc and reacted the way that she did, I thought: 'she must be related to Ryuji'.

Plot points that I didn't predict:

-Kawara being Sayama's father. And it was revealed as he was dying... darn it ;__;

-When Kiryu was stabbed, I held my breath.

-During the car chase scene, I thought I was going to have to shoot down cars like in the previous Yakuza games. Thankfully it wasn't like that! Was this scene present in the PS2 version? Or was it added to psyche us? Hahaha.

CABARET CLUB
I was really happy that the cabaret club came back... and that Yuki came back, too! Before Yuki was introduced, I recognized her voice.

While I played the cabaret club, I kept thinking it'd be hilarious if Majima suddenly walked in to see Kiryu bowing and saying "Welcome". Little did I know...

To be honest, though, I personally preferred the cabaret club in 0 just a bit more. I enjoyed the music more and I thought Majima was great in his role. Kiryu was fine, but I thought the mini-conversations with the platinum hostesses worked better with Majima. Since Majima was an actual manager of a hostess club, he did those conversations as part of training the hostesses and would act as if he was a customer. When Kiryu had mini-conversations, they were actual conversations and many of Kiryu's "correct" choices seemed kinda flirty and a bit out-of-character.

There were a couple things about the cabaret club that I really liked this time around, though: it was much easier to level up the girls, and I loved it when Majima became the announcer.

Below are intro clips of each of my platinum hostesses (and how I dressed them -- except for Yuki) :)

Koyuki! I liked her spunky personality.

Kana! I liked how her substory ended.

Aika! I liked her free-flowing nature.

Shoko! She was my favourite, based on her backstory and the conversations with her.

Yua! She was okay, I guess.

Kirara! I barely changed much when I did her makeover.

Yuki! I wanted to give her a makeover so badly (not because she wasn't dressed well --
I just like giving makeovers, hahaha). She really does look stunning.

I just love Majima's comment at the bottom.

I loved how they brought this back!
Yuki's inner reaction to it was hilarious.

One of the mini-conversations with Kirara. I couldn't help but choose
Majima -- just to see what she would say.

GORO MAJIMA

I didn't go through Majima's Saga until after beating the main story, and I'm glad I did. For me, the final cutscenes wrapped up Kiwami 2 so well, I felt at peace with the game.

But let's back up for a bit.

I wish my interactions with Majima in the main story wasn't just confined to his mini-game Clan Creator, karaoke, and potentially fighting him in the Coliseum. Seriously... seeing Majima everywhere in Kiwami and being able to play against him in so many mini-games really spoiled me, hahaha.

When I realized I could invite Majima to karaoke, I was stoked. I hadn't done much karaoke before that point so I had no idea what Majima would sing. When he started singing, I was surprised with how... light-sounding the tune went. I guess I was expecting something more upbeat like "24-hour Cinderella". Then it cut to scenes of him and Makoto in 0, and I knew... I knew who he was singing to. In the middle of it I started crying hard. After all these years... he still thought about her...! He still loved her! I was expecting to have a cheery fun time with Majima, but instead I got an emotional tearfest, hahaha... <3

When I started Majima's Saga, I explored all over Kamurocho and Sotenbori, just to see what I could do as Majima. Some mini-games were locked out like not being able to play Darts against another person while other games were do-able. When you do karaoke, you still sing two times, but you can only sing "As Long As You're Happy". One neat thing is that the button presses when Majima sings it (without Kiryu cheering) is slightly different.

It really sucks that Majima's skills couldn't be upgraded, but I'm thankful they added this saga to begin with (I'm almost certain this wasn't present in the PS2 version).

I have to applaud Kashiwagi. He took a beating from Majima in 0 but he still treated Majima as an equal and as a person. Anybody who treats Majima decently without expecting something back is a pass in my book.

When Majima got his massage from Makoto... ahh... I had no idea how it would go. Lots of tears were shed (by me) -- a mix of sad and happy tears. The music was also on point for evoking those bittersweet emotions. Majima's quiet, yet expressive reactions conveyed so many thoughts -- or, at least, I picked up many thoughts from him.

When Makoto told Majima the whole story of the watch and how she was currently very happy with her life, but that she regretted not being able to say "thanks" to the person who saved her all those years ago, Majima's quiet smile at the end told me so much (that's the screenshot above). I might be off on my interpretation, but this is what I got from Majima's smile:

-I made the right choice (to leave her to live her life and to not reveal myself)
-It was worth it (because she's happy)
-I did help her after all (because I never thought I actually helped her)
-I have a place in her heart

It was the closure Majima needed. It was the closure Makoto needed, when she received his good-bye gift in the end. There's still pain -- 'cuz it pains me that Majima sacrificed his happiness for hers -- but it wasn't all for nothing. Makoto has a happy life and Majima doesn't have to worry anymore. And now he knows that Makoto still thinks warmly of him...

Aside from writing an ending where Majima and Makoto do end up together... happy... I think what we got was the next best thing. A bit of sadness -- a bit of regret -- but loads of warmth and inner satisfaction.

I just thought up a silly interpretation. The watch Majima leaves for Makoto in 0 -- the watch she still wears and treasures -- maybe it's a symbol that Majima will always "watch" over her (in his heart). *sniffle* :')

MISCELLANEOUS
Here are some miscellaneous thoughts that didn't fit into any of the above topics, and a couple more screenshots and videos I wanted to share.

-Screw Haruka's requests, especially the Bingo Challenge one (golf). Even after looking at a guide, it took me hours and tons of tries to finally succeed. The Virtual-On request was rough, too. She really has crazy requests sometimes.

-I recently got 100% for Majima's song "As Long As You're Happy". Once I get that clip copied from the PS4 and onto the computer, I'll upload that video to this review. I've gone karaoking with Majima so many times now that I will always hear Kiryu going "Chika Chikay" at the very end.

-The intermission chats with the former construction bosses were so hilarious and enjoyable. I especially enjoyed the tongue twister part. Just the thought of burly tough dudes struggling with tongue twisters... hahaha, so awesome xD

-Just like in my previous Yakuza reviews, here is a funny Yakuza-related meme I saw on Reddit. Since it's encouraged to eat a lot in Kiwami 2 to gain experience points, I figured it would be most fitting for this review, hahaha.

-Here's another meme. I find it darn relatable, even though I'm a girl *hugs to all the guys and gals who can relate to it*.

And here are the screenshots and videos!

A selfie of Kiryu with Majima.

My final stats when I beat Kiwami 2. I hadn't played Majima's Saga at all yet.

I didn't realize this was a heat move until I looked it up.
I originally thought 'I guess he'd be stopped at the pole because it's a solid object'.

I thought the music transition in this substory was the most touching
out of all the substories in Kiwami 2.
When the piano starts playing, the tears start falling...
What Granny says also does me in.

The intro scene for the final boss fight in Majima's saga.
I originally put this at the end of Goro Majima's section, but thought it was out-of-place
'cuz of how I ended that section, so I placed it here. It really gets my blood pumping!

If you read this section, thank for reading! Now to finish with more scrolly things. Feel free to comment if you wish :D
